Default Minty 686-3

I just picked up a near mint 686-3 four inch (pre-lock) with the original wood grips for $679-no box or papers. Is this a fair price. Also the s/n is BPE4599. Can anyone tell me the year of manufacture?

Congratulations. Yes, I think it is a fair price, not a steal but more than fair. I don't have my SCSW handy but I'm willing to take a guess. Ca. 1993. I have the same gun and it is fantastic! Since you didn't post a pic of yours, I'll post one of mine as I believe it is the same. Mine is a 686-3 also. And by the way, I wouldn't sell it for $679. It's also hard for me to imagine that these guns are already over 20 years old.

Fair price? No, MHO. What you have to pay these days? Yes.
It comes from November 1993.

If it is "minty", shouldn't it be green?

I have seen worse in terms of prices of 4" pre-lock 686s but, it is on the high side in my opinion.

I paid over $500 for mine about a month ago but it's not mint. Really I don't mind the condition since I bought it to shoot.

As long as you are happy the price doesn't matter.

If you willingly paid it in an arm's length transaction, then 'yes'. Especially if you're happy with your purchase and there have been no surprises since you took possession. I think what you are really asking is whether the price you paid is generally in line with the current market for pre-lock K-frames in excellent condition. And I think the answer to that is also 'yes'. Congratulations on acquiring such a fine revolver!

Honestly, at that price, that gun in minty condition will probably last minutes in a CA store or in CalGuns. Very nice L-frame you got! Congrats!

I would have to say yes on the price. I bought a 6" -3 a couple of years ago, for $580. (no box or papers) Never regretted it. Also have a 4" 586 no dash. Enjoy your 686! Bob

Great revolver, and I think you did fine on your purchase. Hang on to it and that price is going to look better and better.
