I recently purchased a S&W model 64-6 police buyback revolver. My two questions about these markings are: (1) Do the letters CFAxxxx possibly tell where this particular revolver was sold? (2) The numbers 328 appear of the inside of the yoke when the cylinder is opened. Numbers generally do not appear here on commercially sold guns. What do they possibly mean? The only way to tell where your revolver was shipped is to request a letter from the S&W historian. The letters are somewhat expensive ($150?) and take a while to receive. As Ashlander says, the number with the CFA prefix is the firearm's serial number. The other numbers are assembly numbers used to track parts and pieces through the manufacturing process. All of my "commercially sold" Smith and Wesson revolvers have assembly numbers either in the yoke or on the crane.
The history letters are $50, but requests are on hold until sometime next year. It will tell you the day it left the factory and where it went, but not who bought it at the store where it was sold.
