Default Nickel Model 49 Rarity and Value?

I have a chance to pick up a Model 49 in nickel. The gentleman said it was a no dash and that it was not pristine but it was in very good shape. I did not get a chance to look at it and only learned of it because I asked him if he ever came across any 49's. I told him that I would contact him after the holidays to take a look and see about purchasing.

He said it wasn't one that he had out for sale because he had been keeping it for himself and I believed carried it from time to time.

This dealer had several like new or unfired older S&W and Colt revolvers on his table for sale at decent prices so it appears he is a collector.

My question would be how rare are the nickel version of the 49 and what would be a fair price range for one. I know that without it you cannot make an accurate guess. Looking for a range to judge if he is in the ballpark.

I want it and hope to have the money left over after the holidays , but am trying to justify my spending in my mind.

THANKS FOR THE HELP.

$375-425 depending on geography. I have one I'm considering selling and from previous gunbroker sales that was the price range realized for a very good to excellent example without the original box. They can be scarce when looking for one in person versus Internet so if you want one, I suggest grabbing it.

According to page 216 of the Third Edition of the Standard catalog of Smith & Wesson, the model 49 Bodyguard in nickel is scarce. 10 years ago, the price was $400 in new in box condition. I have seen asking (not sold price) of $800 on internet for mint condition.

$369, $400, $450 (has box/papers), and one at $575. Those are the prices of the four completed auctions for nickel 49s on gonebroker when you search completed auctions. So those auctions usually require shipping and a FFL transfer so maybe consider adding $50 in value for a fair market value. There is a huge difference in price for LNIB 99% condition guns with matching box/case and paperwork. They will fetch $700+. High grade collector guns bring large premiums these days compared to a 95% gun by itself. Disregard blue book and the standard catalog with pricing, instead use completed prices.

Thanks for the replies. I will have to take a look at it after the holidays and decide which way to go.
