19-8 .38 Revolver Questions
I have a 19-8 revolver. Serial number CDP9381. It has the original box and it is marked as a .38. When I bought it they told me it was a .357 and I have shot it with .357 mag rounds since I have owned it. I was reading some threads on here about it and it might not be safe to shoot the .357 mag rounds? Is this true? It sounds like it was made as a Braziliain police gun in 2000 because they don't allow that large caliber round there. I want to sell it to a buddy looking for a .357 revolver but I don't want to sell it to him if it is not safe to shoot the .357 mags out if it. The gun is real clean with maybe 50 rounds shot thru it. Any idea of worth?
Thanks in advance for your help.

Welcome! Right at the end of model 19 production (the -8 was the last variation), there were guns made for an export contract stamped .38 Special, but there have been several reports they were actually chambered for .357. I would guess since they fit .357s they are safe to fire, and perhaps the Brazilians never thought to check... . A phone call to factory customer service may tell you for sure.
Value is dependent on its exact condition, but "real clean" with the original box and contents sounds to be a $600-650 gun to me. Hope this is helpful.

Since you have the box, what's the..........
1.) Prodcut Code: (6-digit number, begins with "1")
2.) Spec. Ord. number: (4-digit number, begins with "9", maybe "0").
Provide that and I'll have more to say.

It is listed as a blue 4" stamped ".38 Special", just as you describe it. It was ready to be shipped on the 54th day of the year 2000, or February 23; the model 19 was only cataloged until 1999 so it is a late one. Here are some previous posts about it:

Enjoy!

Mine is not stamped 38 special on the side of the barrel like others I have seen in this forum. So if I did not have the box you would not even know it was cataloged as a .38 special. So can I sell it as a .357 as I purchased it as a .357? Like I said I have fired approx. 50 .357 mags thru it but is it safe to do so in your opinion? Sounds like S & W will tell me it is not safe to do so but without any reasoning behind it as I have seen in other threads on here. Its a .357 frame and cahambered for .357 so why would it not be safe to shoot the .357? I don't want to sell my buddy looking for a .357 a .38 special.
Thanks

So is it stamped 357? Or is there just no designation?
I say that if you can shoot a 357 out of it, you can sell it to your buddy as a 357, IMO.

Wouldn't it have more value to a collector? Limited production. Oddly marked. Box and papers.

I told him $750.00 and all the controversy about the gun and caliber. On gun broker a 4" 19-7 same as mine but marked .357 Magnum is selling for $875. Atleast thats what they are asking so I thought $750 was fair.

The product code, 148926, is definitely what's called a "Brazil Contract" gun. I think it's marked .38 Spl for reasons of political correctness. It's been reamed for .357 and no doubt it has the proper heat treat for that cartridge. I don't know that S&W heat treats specials and mags different anyway. Why would they?
Back in the day many LEO refused to issue .357 Magnums to officers because it was considered inhumane or unfairly powerful, or.... who knows why; it never made any sense to me. Even though the guns these officers were issued were chambered for .357. The officers got .38 Spl.
I think this kind of thinking carried over on your BC gun. The Powers-That-Be wanted it to say .38 Spl on the barrel so as not to "frighten the women and horses"..... and the Brazilian version of the ACLU.
