Correct Stocks for a 66-1
Sometime back I acquired a 4", Model 66-1, Serial # 69K7087. She reportedly departed the mother ship in May/1981 and has served her country in a Kentucky LE agency. When adopted she was wearing checkered targets with the football cutout. Which begs the question are those the correct stocks? The targets are in pretty good shape, silver washers, no cracks, dings or dents & checkering is still prominent. They appeared filthy so washed them in a Murphy's Oil Soap bath. Regardless if this was good or bad, it was done and yes I would do it again. The result was kind of a toss up. The grime, sweat, oil and body fluids all came off. However, there was very little of the factory finish left. Oh well they look good. That leaves the last question: are they worth getting someone to professionally refinish? Were it not for the checkering I would have no qualms about DIY. But having seen more than a few horrible examples of how that turns out I don't feel qualified to try. Thanks for any replies. hardcase60

They may have been late in the extractor (football) cutout era, but if they bother you a nice set of speedloader stocks will not cost much.
It sounds as though a few light coats of Tru-Oil with steel wool in between, followed by wax would make the ones you have nice again.

Bottom is 66-1 ser#67K, not too far before yours. I bought it new and it does have the "speedloader cutout" grip. Seems like the speedloader cutout came much earlier to the K frame (around 1980) as I have a 1982 25-5 with the "football cutout." Joe

I've even refinished some with aerosol polyurethane - semi-gloss or gloss looks good when done. Just don't load it up in the checkering.

Thanks for the replies. I found an old 2014 thread about 66-2 stocks and there was a post about "Magnas are the "correct" original stocks". I realize only a letter would give me the definitive answer about my gun, but would magnas have been a more likely standard? Particularly on an agency purchased/issued revolver. Best regards, hardcase60

Magna stocks would have been standard for the 2.5 and 3" 66s, not the 4 or 6".

Magnas were standard on the 2 1/2", Targets for the 4&6" My first (mid '70's) 19-3 4" also came with target grips even though the hammer and trigger were standard width (as on my 6" 66). One thing for sure, S&W did things "their way." Joe

Well, regardless of what the factory had on'm, every Peace Officer I ever saw with a M66 or M19 had Pachmayr Grips on'm.

Tru-Oil is the way to go. Just follow the directions on the label, you will be amazed at the results, I was!

I've had Goodyear's on several K & N frames prior to my retirement. For LE use there probably isn't a better stock/grip. Don't need refinishing, not cost prohibitive, comfortable, grip-able under adverse conditions, and absorbs some recoil. I make these observations knowing there maybe some who will have differing opinions. Currently not adverse to putting a set on the 66-1 for certain situations. Kinda like having dress boots and work boots. Thanks for reminding me I do have options. Good job.
