new member looking for 586 rear sight leaf
hi I'm new to the forums , I recently just bought a 686 7rd stainless revolver because of how much I loved my dads 586. Well my dads 586 was bought for him probably 20 or so years ago by my mom and it had a cheap scope mounted on it. Recently he decided he didn't want the scope so we took it off and realized theres no rear sight and obviously my mom didn't get it when she bought it so decided to ask for some help here. Was wondering if anyone on here had an extra to sell or the best place to get them. Also from reading around I know people as if theres a dash by the model number but I dont see one, all I see is mod 586 and than the serial number starting with ADN

You can find entire rear sights on eBay or GunBroker.com. Rear sight leaf kits are available there or directly from Smith & Wesson, which is the route I recommend as they come in numerous heights and they would know which one your gun was manufactured with.

Just remember older Smiths like your "no dash" 586 used the longer square front sight mount. If you look close at the ones listed in the link armorer951 provided you can see the different types. The round front mount is what's on newer Smiths

Did you look at Bowen Classic Arms sights?

I would call the number shown on the rough country page. They'll help you with getting proper measurements, including the front sight height which will determine the most correct rear sight. Most likely you'll need the .146/.385 blade height.
If it were me, I'd ask about sending the revolver to them for installation.

......................
For what it would cost to ship the gun both ways, the cost of a custom aftermarket sight, gunsmithing labor costs..... you could almost buy another used gun WITH a sight.
I'd be looking at those 35 - 50 dollar eBay auctions real close.

If it wasn't for the sentimental value I would just sell the gun and put towards a new one, but its my dads and its something I plan on keeping my whole life and passing on to my kids so its tough

That being the case I'd definitely want to put it back to factory spec with a OEM rear sight assembly.
Be patient. That's how you get good deals on eBay. Wait for the perfect sight at the perfect price. Look, and look, and look..... then pounce! So what if it takes 6 months. It's a gun you'll have forever.
For about $10 you can get a dial caliper at Harbor Freight. It's not super high quality, but it would beat the heck out of your tape measure.

If you are going to go with a factory sight, you'll need to get the correct dimensioned hole placement. If you're not careful, you'll end up with more than one rear sight. Unless you can get the sellers to provide the dimensions of their sights.
Like I said before, your gun probably originally came with a
.146" blade.
Lowes and The Home Depot also carry the calipers for reasonable costs.
Also, this isn't a collector piece but a family heirloom, so not that important to stick with factory. It'll never be factory again because it's missing the factory installed sight.
The primary reason I suggested the Bowen option was to obviate the inherent risks associated with buying used sights via eBay or the like. People selling these parts cannot and will not be able to guarantee that the parts they sell will work for you.
