New Model 60
Friends-just joined the forum and hoping to get lots of good info. I had my heart set on a Ruger sp101 until I tried the trigger which felt like my arthritic knee. I tried the Model 60 and what a difference! About to pull the trigger and buy, but was hoping for some thoughts about the 60 before I do-I have very small hands which makes this an ideal size for me

Which Model 60 is it? 2", 3" barrel.
I would say the 3" 60-15 compares favorably with the SP101.

Welcome to the Forum
You have chosen wisely
A stainless model 60, J-frame, Chief's Special from Smith and Wesson has been on my ankle almost every day since 1980.
When I pocket carry, I switch from the model 60 to one of the Smith and Wesson Centennials. Either my Scandium framed 340 if I am wearing lightweight clothing or a 940 Special if the clothing allows
I have and will continue to stake my life in these fine firearms.

That's a great all-around revolver. Easy to shoot, and easy on the hands.
And pardon my rudeness- Welcome to the Forum!

I currently have 3 versions of the J-frame. In my career, I have carried the J-frame more than any other firearm because it could be concealed so easily and has good firepower. I put a laser on my wife's model 60, bobbed the hammer, and dished the trigger guard. She is very pleased with its accuracy, comfort shooting, recoil, holsters and she carries it routinely. Great firearm with decades of professional acceptance. Go for it!

I just bought an SP101 with 3" barrel. I bought mine used and the trigger is surprisingly smooth! I have heard they really benefit from being shot as far as smoothing out trigger pull, and mine seems to bear that out.
I hear what you are saying about new triggers. The SP101's I look at were all very stiff, and I too had looked at a Model 60 3" and was delighted with the trigger pull in comparison to the new Rugers.
I really wanted the SP101 though for the few ounces more weight vs the model 60, yet not too heavy - kind of an ideal trail gun if you know what I mean, power vs carry weight.
When I found that used Ruger, with the barrel screwed on straight (something I was having a hard time finding on NIB SP101's in my neck of the woods) I bought it with no regrets. Interestingly, I have a S&W 340PD that has a worse, gritty-wise, trigger than the SP101.
I don't think you can go wrong with either. I like my Smith, but I like that Ruger too! Buy whichever works best for your needs.

There are a few options in 3". Sights, adjustable vs. fixed or the pro series. Any of the model 60 are a great choice. My daughter and I are off to the range tomorrow put some ammo through her Pro Series.

For about 10 dollars and 10 mins work, you can do wonders for the Rugers trigger, just a "drop in" spring under the grips, speaking of grips, Houge makes a set that is a delight for the sp101. Ck out the easy mods on the Ruger on U-Tube, regards Ernie

I rented both a SP101 and a S&W Mod 60-15 3 inch at the range sometime back. The trigger on the S&W was much smoother in double action and I was sub sequentially much more accurate with it.
I have since purchased a new Mod 60-15 3 inch and put on S&W Pro Series grips.
The 60 has become my primary CCW since last fall. I IWB carry with a Milt Sparks VM2 holster.
It actually fun at the range too!

Hey guys, first post here on the forum and this thread is a great place to start. I bought 60-15 a few weeks back and have fallen in love with this pistol! I didn't like the grips that came on it and have changed them out to a pair of smooth targets. The pistol fits my hands so much better now and IMO helps with the recoil and the wood kinda classes it up a little too.
This pistol just puts a smile on my face every time I take it to the range. You should buy one!

If your 3" Model 60 is anything like my Model 36-6 "Chief's 'Target' Special", you will love it! I don't like to sell any of my firearms, let alone any handgun, my Model 36-6 would be the absolute last handgun I would consider selling. When I exercise my CFP, it will most likely be the most used handgun in my carry rotation. Buy it, shoot it, and enjoy it!

Welcome to the club
Sage,
Welcome to the asylum, er, the Forum. You are about to embark on a wallet lightening, smile enhancing experience known as Smith & Wesson. It's a disease I tell ya.
There are now 2 model 60-4's on Guns-make us-Broker.
I snagged this one two nights ago for a shade over $600 and will get it next week.
No lock, 3" stout little J-Frame.
What's not to like?
S/F,
RAS aka Walter

try the pro series grips on your 60-15. the 60-15 pro comes with them.
Altamont grips make a few different ones. im thinking of ordering the basket weave ones soon.

I have owned a sp101 and it was heavy built little revolver that I really liked. However, I just couldn't get comfortable with the ergonomics of the trigger. I finally traded it for a model 60 and love it. The trigger on the model 60 is just night and day smoother and more comfortable for me.

Picked up this little gal a few weeks ago. She's been by my side ever since. Added the plump Altamonts to fill up my hand -- they're great.

I did. I picked the the gator back style and added the emblems. They are nice but after trying both I preferred the older target style.
Actually I went grip nutz. I also bought a pair of the old style checkered style target grips too. Out of all of them I liked the smooth the best.

Super Jealous of everyone and their model 60s. I have been trying to find a 60-10 3" .357. I bid on one today but didn't want to cough up the dough (it went for over $750 not including shipping and transfer fees). Maybe one day I'll find one lol. I shot my buddies and have been on the hunt since.

All the new J-frames I've handled in gun shops seem to have about 20 lb triggers. That's why I only buy and carry older ones. My SP-101s have better triggers than modern day S&W J-frames.

My 60-15 Pro born in 2014 has a 10.5 pound DA trigger after many rounds and dry firing. SA is 3 pounds even. Great revolver and a real shooter.
