Default Lead shaving. Model 63. Help.

Is this normal? It's leading on the right side of the barrel.
I cleaned the powder residue with a brush and gun scrubber so the lead would be more visible. This has happened since I got the revolver new.
This is after about 100 rounds of various ammo. Standard velocity and match ammo. I get sprayed on the left side of my face too.

Should it go back to S&W?
Thanks.

Mine sometimes does the same thing. Has about 2000 rounds through it. Only time I get sprayed on the left side of my face is if I am shooting Agulia .22 shorts. All of the .22LR, .22 Long, and any other brand of .22 short ammo I have fired have not done this and don't seem to lead up the gun.

That is not normal. My 63 has never done anything even remotely similar. It would appear the cylinder is out of alignment. I'd call S&W and send it back.

I agree. I have had a model 63 since I bought it new. It is the last revolver I would ever sell, and it never did this.

You've got:
1 vote for "normal" - "Mine sometimes does the same thing."
3 votes for not normal.

I think the answer depends. It's probably abnormal? While that is a significant lead build up, having thousands of rounds through K-22's, model 17's, and a model 63, it appears it can happen with enough shooting and worse with some ammo versus others but that much leading shouldn't occur with just 100 rounds. I have experienced Aguila ammo do this after a few hundred rounds, maybe 500, but not to that degree. Even with a lot of leading my accuracy was good and bore and cylinder chamber alignment were good.

1. Clean the debris away from the underneath of the top strap. A flat brass tool should easily scrape it away and brass will not scratch the bluing but still be very careful and test a small area first. Some people will flatten out the bullet end of a spent piece of rifle brass to use as a scraper.
2. Clean the gun well especially the cylinder chambers, barrel, and forcing cone.
3. Check the alignment of the cylinder chambers with the bore. A "range rod" is a tool for checking this. If the alignment seems off you need more help, information, and/or a gunsmith.
4. If you can convince yourself the alignment is good then shoot 50-100 rounds with different ammo and see if you get any significant build up.

Definately not normal. I think S&W needs to look at that one!

What a coincidence. My 63 will also be coming back from Smith on Wednesday. Sent back for a timing issue. Hopefully both are in excellent repair and we each get the right one back! I will be checking the serial number upon receipt.

@Always Armed,

I find it a bit odd that the hammer and firing pin were replaced, almost as much as I am surprised that they appear to be advising against the use of lead round nose ammo.

I would be extremely curious as to whether their fix really does address your problem.

Odd repair order says "cut forcing cone", if it wasn't cut the first time, that is likely the main problem. Good luck this weekend, looking forward to your (hopefully successful) range report!

I gave it a good cleaning this evening and it does look like they cut the forcing cone. I'll try to get it shot this Saturday.

Hmm..I recently got a 63-5 and have been shooting Aguila LRN ammo almost exclusively. There's no leading at all around the forcing cone. No shavings in the face when shooting.

Let us know if yours is fixed. These are nice little guns.

I purchased a H&R 22 revolver that shaved. I found the cylinder was chewed on one lock up slot. Since the gun isn't worth much I figured I'd fix it. With my Ph.D. In fabrication, welding and moving metal lol I went to work with a flat nosed punch. I moved the side of the lock up slot very carefully. She locks up now where it should be. You can't tell I fixed it.
The local online seller is noted for screwing people. I should of known better.

Alright...
I shot 100 rounds of CCI MiniMag round nose copper and 100 rounds of Aguila Super Extra High Velocity round nose copper.
No lead deposits anywhere that I could see. The bullets landed wherever I was aiming after I got the sights set.
I'll do a thorough cleaning on it and see if any lead comes out of the barrel.
It's a good revolver now but for the outrageous price I paid for it, it should have been better out of the box.

After a thorough cleaning it looks like normal fouling and leading of this revolver. I hope to enjoy it for years to come.

I sent mine back for that and I was getting sprayed in the face a lot. S&W changed the barrel, it's good now.
