Default PC 657 Magnum Hunter

Not sure of dash number (maybe -3), but it's prelock. Any pros and cons or general opinions from those who've owned this exact gun. Well balanced or front heavy, too heavy or just right, accuracy, quality, ect...

Again, it's the Magnum Hunter magna ported with integral rail on barrel (not the Classic Hunter). Thanks!

It sounds like you are describing product 170062 produced as an RSR exclusive in the late nineties

I have had mine for 20 years now. I love it just like my other Performance Center revolvers.

Too Heavy? For concealed carry yes. For target shooting and hunting? No

Accuracy of all 41 Magnums is so spectacular that even the match grade, air gauged barrels from the PC are hard pressed to improve on the production guns.

Quality is top notch like all PC guns.

Default Ammo limitations?

Can this handle all the hottest 41 mag loads like Buffalo Bore or others? Can cylinder length handle all heavy grain cast bullets available for 41 magnum?

Groo here
The cylinder should be fine, and the gun should be robust.
I don't know of any +p loadings for the 41.
It has not been watered down yet.
The round was loaded hotter than a 44mag when it first came out
there is more steel in the cylinder due to the smaller holes.

This looks like the heaviest load for 41 mag out there by BB (I don't handload):

Heavy .41 Magnum Ammo - 265 gr. L.W.N. (1,350 fps/M.E. 1,072 ft. lbs.)

Underwood makes a matching load to that BB, Underwood makes great ammo that almost always meets or exceeds manufacturers posted velocity.

This thread is not about loads, but for whatever it is worth, I have been a fan of the "middle magnum" for over 35 years. I cast everything from a 160-grain full WC to a 295-grain flat nose, and I have shot that flat nosed bullet (from NEI) in front of 18 grains of H110. It wasn't the most accurate load I have ever shot out of my Model 57, but the cases pushed out of the cylinders with normal force.

Additionally, the second Accurate Arms handloading manual lists that 290-grain bullet and some recommended loads. It really doesn't matter, but back when Freedom Arms was working on their 654, I sent them 100 projectiles to play with, and sent Accurate Arms 20 primed cases and 20 of those hard cast flat noses to work up loads with. What they developed is listed in their second manual.

I guess you could call that my 15 minutes of fame.

And lastly, I have gotten a chrono'ed 1800 fps from that projectile out of my 10-1/2" 654 Silhouette from Freedom Arms. (But don't try this at home.)

Sorry for hijacking the thread...

I got My PC Hunter from the first run for RSR in 96 I think. I have been shooting it since. Mostly a 220 SWC with 21 gr H110. I also use a 265 WFN with 18 gr 4227. The most accurate wheel gun I own. The only thing I did was cut the front sight to a patridge style.

EVERY Smith and Wesson (or other manufacturer) firearm chambered and marked 41 Magnum by the OEM can handle ALL SAAMI specification ammunition in existence.

If you, or the boutique ammunition company that you are purchasing from, chooses to ignore those standards, then this is a question that can only be answered by shooting the specific overpressure load that you are referring to.

I have been fortunate to own two of these, keep one with open sights and one scoped. They are fantastic guns, great shooters and are often carried during deer season. Also being a 41 mag fan helps, enjoy.

No. Only would be using reputable factory ammunition. I think that some 44 mag loads from Garrett or others is not suggested for any other gun but Rugers. I was just wondering if there are some 41 mag loads live that.

The 44 Magnum ammunition that you reference from Garrett is loaded to pressures beyond SAAMI industry standards. The Garrett packaging is marked +P to inform purchasers that this is overpressure ammunition.

In my '73 edition of the Lyman Cast Boolit Handbook it shows load data for a 220 gr.cast bullet at 17.5 gr. of Blue Dot with a velocity of 1625 fps. Shazzam!!!

There were a lot of "sketchy" loads published before the advent of affordable and reliable piezoelectric pressure transducers in the late '80's and '90's. Many a load manual was rewritten DOWNWARD, as a result. For that reason it is wise to use load manuals and loads published and developed, or at least verified, within the last 10 to 15 years.

Default 657 PC Magnum Hunter holster?

Anyone have HOLSTER recommendations for one of these 657 Magnum Hunter PC guns (with and without scope)? I'm assuming some sort of shoulder holster would be needed for carrying in the field.

I've had good results with Uncle Mike bandolier holsters. Inexpensive and functional. The scoped version will hold both a scoped or unscoped gun. Available in black nylon along with different cammo patterns. I've picked up several used on eBay for less than $30 shipped. Including one for a 14-inch scoped Contender.

I own and have owned a LOT of .41s and this is one of the few that has escaped me...they look like a fantastic shooter.

As to holsters, for a belt holster you may want to try Simply Rugged. I have four of his holsters and they work great in the field.

For an inexpensive bandoleer type hunting holster I've been using one bought off ebay. I have them to fit a scoped long barrel, 6" N, 4" N and 1911...each will fit a wide variety of guns....American made and can be worn under the arm, on the chest or on a belt.

This is the one I have for the scoped 8 3/8" 57 I hunt with but fits a 6.5" scoped gun just fine...

Scoped Bandolier 7 1 2" 8 3 8" Barrel Holster for Ruger Smith Wesson | eBay

I do not have any .41 Magnums, as I started with a .44 and stayed with it. But, I want one of those!!!
