sw282 has been having a big time with one of those at the monthly IHMSA matches. Think he killed the first factory supplied reddot, but the second? It may be S&W has swapped reddot suppliers, though:
Hard to tell without expanding the photo, but the optics seem to be different. Pretty sure that's the warranty S&W PC reddot.
Hopefully, sw282 will chime in directly.
Ought to be a good long range platform. (I've been eyeballing one of the fluted barrel 629 PCs for some time, but keep getting distracted by other shinies! Plus, there's the other 629s...)

The UTG red dot gave up @ 1760rds. lt went back to Smith&Wesson, replaced free of charge. New UTG now has 3000+ on it..lts a $31 site off Midway.. l know because l bought a back-up UTG while waiting for the broken replacement. l posted the Sat shoot thread below.

0ne irritation has been a lead buildup on the brake. Caused by shooting 900fps cast bullet loads, it is unsightly. Since unsuccessfully trying to clean the blobs off, l simply BLOW them away with a few MAGNUM loads.. Cleaning the brake l unknowingly added a little BLING to the gun...A piece of crocus cloth wrapped around the brake while trying to get the lead off has made it shiny like the polished stainless cylinder. l give the cylinder a little extra attention by hitting it with a dab of Flitz while cleaning...The barrel is a two piece affair.. Lothar/Walther liner and outer shroud secured by the brake. lt acts as a tensioned/torqued nut too.

I have the older Lew Horton model of the Magnum Hunter. Scary accurate and fun to shoot. SA trigger is about as close to hair as you can get. Still just use the irons on mine. Probably have about 5000 rounds thru it so far and am very happy with it. I did change out the stock grips and replaced them with the Model 500 impact Absorbing Hogues.

My first Model 29 has an 8 3/8" barrel. It was from the Dirty Harry days, when 29's were almost impossible to get. I decided I wanted to scope it. There were no scope mounts available, that I was aware of, so I contracted with a local precision machine shop (with an introduction) to mount a rail on top. I even had to furnish gunsmith taps and drills. Two friends decided to "ride along" and we did theirs, also. It was totally successful. I mounted the scope between the sights with detachable mounts. If the weather turns bad while hunting, the iron sights are still zero'd:
I have taken several deer with this set up and it WORKS. Off a rest, I can keep most shots on a playing card at 100 yards.
Then I happened to run onto a real deal in a PC "Light Hunter", very similar to the O.P. Smith really did a nice job on this one. The scope (or Red Dot) is mounted between the sights and the sight base is set into the rib giving a VERY strong recoil lug (scopes can be a problem with the heavy recoiling .44 Magnum). I'm very happy with this one, too:
The O.P. can be happy that he has made a REALLY good choice in a hunting handgun.
FWIW

I just got home from giving the new one a test drive. Man what a sweetheart! I went through 200 rnds of 240 gr FHJ loaded at 1450 FPS. I was VERY impressed with this gun! I didn't know how much the brake would affect the recoil but it calmed it down like a lamb. (maybe a mad lamb) It felt more like the 500 push than the 44 mag snap. The trigger in dbl action was unbelievably smooth and single action broke like glass. It took me a minute to zero in the green dot but got it fine tuned and was putting in decent groups at 25 yds (indoor range). I need to get outdoors with my glasses and stretch her out. Here are the obligatory dirty pics.

I am! What a great bunch of guys. I shot three rounds and saw my score improve each time. Several good tips and coaching helped me out. ( A plate full of killer smoked pork didn't hurt either! ) It sure was a lot more rewarding than punching holes in paper. When you hear BING and see that target fall it gives ya a big fuzzy. Do you have matches like this up in Maine?

Happy to have met you in person, 75Vette! Ron and Sherri put on an excellent match.
kdiver58 and I usually spot for each other, and he also spots for his wife. It's an important job, especially if you aren't quite on target! Fortunately, Ron was there to get you going, he's a far better coach than I.
kdiver58 and I also are still in load development stage, still learning even after years shooting.
BTW, those Field Pistol targets looked like Smallbore targets at the end of the day. (Last shooter on the line, as it turned out.)
Cameras were MIA, so no pics, sorry!

I was thinking you'd would.
There used to be shoots like that all over the place in New England, they started going away in the 90's. I think there's still one up on the coast somewhere? not sure about NH but I'm thinking no. Plenty of combat and cowboy? shoots but it's not same. I used to enjoy the precision and intensity of big bore silhouette. I've still got most of a set of targets.

There's an active IHMSA club shooting near Gordonsville, VA.
Link below for their schedule:
IHMSA Forum
We have folk come in from neighboring states to shoot, so even if you aren't especially close to Gordonsville, there may be a shooter close to you who does attend. Gunny road trip!
