FWIW: I occasionally dry fire my centennial j-frames without them, but if doing so extensively, consider the following commentary from renowned author, instructor and revolver gunsmith Grant Cunningham...
"If you pick one of the lightweight Centennial models, there is one specific concern: the hammer comes to rest below the firing pin, as opposed to above like the other models. The metal in that area can be very slightly swaged into the firing pin channel by the hammer; I've seen a few where firing pin travel has consequently been compromised, leading to possible ignition failures. In fact, there is one on my bench this week with the beginning of the problem. This isn't an issue from firing live rounds, but from dry firing without spring-loaded snap caps. If you elect one of the 642/442 models, do not dry fire without snap caps."
Does this still occur with the scandium frame guns?
"Probably, though to a slightly lesser extent due to the tougher material."
