22LR MOUNTAIN GUN!?
I see available online a model 617 mountain gun, 4 1/8" in 22LR. I can't find any info on this online. The SKU is 150929. Description says it's new 'old' stock. Anyone have any information or experience with this piece? Think it will make a perfect carry around the farm! THanks

There was a recent post about it with a photo. They could have very well named it the 618. Someone here will have one soon and post a report.

It's a step in the right direction. A sku that starts with "15" usually means it's not standard production. Maybe a limited run for a certain distributor. You can see it's a 10-shot. I'd like it better if they lost the ejector shroud.

Is it on the K frame or the L frame? I'd be interested in a K frame.

I wish it didn't say mountain gun on a 22 but it didn't stop me from ordering one! Thanks for sharing, I had been looking for a good deal on a 4" 617 and the semi lug barrel is different in a good way.

I just checked on Smith's Web Site for the specs on a regular 617 and the new Mountain Gun is considerably lighter....by.9oz.
Nice gun-more selections-glad to see Smith putting it out. I'll hang on to my 617-4.
Although I'd be curious if it has the new ball detent locking system like thge new 66 and the 669 or whatever the number is of the new L frame .44 mag

Called S&W about the 617 Mountain gun and this was a special distributor run that was done this year. I missed getting one "by that much", as Maxwell Smart would say!!!
The L-frame 44 is a 69. Also curious about lock.

Ya don't suppose that they have any left over barrels at the mothership???? One of those would look good on my 617-4

Color me skeptical, but that 10-shot cylinder certainly appears to have been photoshopped into the frame. (The color of the stainless of the cylinder doesn't match the frame).
I hope I'm proven wrong...........but a new 617 for $650?? C'mon, this smells REALLY fishy.

Photo may be composite but gun is real. It took S&W a few minutes to find because it was not regular run, but it was a special distributor run this year. He also said that was a good price. I also asked about parts barrel and said they had none. Straight from the horses mouth this morning!

I would have jumped on one of those barrels as the donor for Project 616 when it was being built... I guess I'm probably better off with the heavier barrel, but this Mountain Gun configuration would have made a sweet looking 327 Fed Mag carry gun!

Maybe it's aluminum. They done it before. Gotta keep a Mountain Gun lite. No one wants to haul a heavy gun up a mountain.

Description in ad:
"This Model 617 Mountain Gun is part of our S&W Archive Collection -
a collection of rare Smith & Wesson firearms that are all brand-new,
in original condition, but no longer manufactured."
Makes it sound like this brand new limited run distributor exclusive was manufactured in the past and this limited supply was just found and sent out. What a load of bull. . . .
Although the ad is a load, the idea is great. a standard shroud on a K frame 4 inch 22 LR with a 10-shot cylinder. Excellent idea! Another gun that should be regular production.

A 22 revolver is probably the MOST useful gun to pack. Hunting small game and carrying 500 rounds of subsonic ammo is a worthy compromise to carrying a 460 and maybe 20 rounds in the unlikely event of a large animal attack. It also makes fine deterrent to cognitive 2 legged predators with the nearest hospital many miles away.
Also anyone and everyone would be able to shoot it if needed, even my 5yo knows what to do with it.
I always pack my 617 on my camping trips and sometimes my 66. The 629 is a safe queen and the 460 is just too big.

I was to slow for the 617 mountain gun purchase and did I really miss the 4th standard catalog ? Babysitting grandchildren must be distracting me a little to much . Oh well a scandium k-22 would be even better ! There wasn't one was there ?

The 4th hasn't even been released yet. It's due out in August. I think what 68sixspeed was referring to was any info on this new M617 Mountain Gun will have to go in the 5th edition. Since new info for the .4th was likely frozen 3 or 4 months ago., and this gun looks to be newer than that. So, the 4th edition isn't even out yet, and it's already obsolete in certain areas.

I would be more interested in buying a barrel for a pre IL 617 .
Perhaps the vendor will realize another run is in order, and perhaps S&W will have a few extra barrels left over this time.

Well, I have one in my grubby hands - and it's sweet.
This one looks like it has been in storage for a while, as there's some corrosion on the frame where the serial and model numbers are found.
There is no new lock-up detent, as with the M69.
The Mountain Gun barrel profile feels much more balanced in the hand than a full-lug example. Shooting report will have to wait a few days until I can get to the range.
Pics are coming, probably later tonight. At first blush, it looks like a solid gun. S&W could add this one to the regular rotation, and see some good sales, IMO.

Does the finish match all over? In the photo (maybe photoshopped) the cylinder and barrel look different. How is action? Thanks for the report, looking forward to seeing the range report. Congrats!!

I just checked to see if sportsmansoutdoorsuperstore has any more in stock,,,
NO,,, but,,,, !!!
They raised the price by $50!!
Why would they raise the price on a gun that supposedly is NLA??
Figuring it takes about a week total to get my hands on the gun,, my rate of return due to the price increase is over 400%,,,
I wish I could get that on a CD!!!

Wonder where they're getting more and who the original distributor is for whom these were supposedly made? If they're raising the price they must expect to get more in; perhaps they were made for Sportsmansoutdoorsuperstore? There is nothing about them on the S&W website and little or no information via Google although I could have missed some in searching. I would think some of the folks here would have run in to these before now if some distributor was actively selling them.

Could the 617 Mountain Gun have been intended for export??
I see a 357 that states it was intended for export:
"This S&W Model 686 SSR Pro Series "Rappy" Revolver was a special-edition, manufactured as an export for the Italian market. It is part of our S&W Archive Collection - a collection of rare Smith & Wesson firearms that are all brand-new, in original condition, but no longer manufactured"

That's entirely possible. The 'Rappy' 686s were sold in Canada as well, in a 5-inch barrel length. If memory serves, the logos were placed a bit differently on the 5-inch versions versus those at SOSS slated for Italy.
The 'Mountain Gun' nomenclature points more towards an English-speaking country, IMO. On the other hand, the revolver's rimfire status would be appealing to many countries in Western Europe, where it is mandatory to start club shooting with .22lr, or where licensing might be easier for rimfire weapons.
My WAG is Canada, with absolutely zero factual evidence to back it up.

Picked mine up from my FFL today...
First impressions...
The trigger is mice, better than my stock CZ-75's.
The cylinder needs a bit of a push to be opened, I assume it needs a bit of lubrication somewhere.
The rubber grips actually do seem to fit my hand.
The serial number prefix is CTD. Maybe this was intended to be a special run for Cheaper Than Dirt?
That said, I am very pleased with it, even though I haven't shot it yet (I need to find some .22lr first).

My first is setting at my FFL, which is 25 miles away,,
The second shipped today,, will arrive Monday,,
So, decisions, decisions,, waste a 50 mile trip to pick up the first,,,
just so I can drool a little??
OR,, just pick them both up on Monday,,, Hmmmmm
Sorry about the second one g-dad,,, but,
I got a 2 year old grandson that needs EVERYTHING that Pop-Pop has!!
How may years will it set until we can go shooting??

Got mine too. New condition, bone dry, seems great. Only thing that took me by surprise is there is no 'mountain gun' on the barrel! No signs of it being removed. It is tapered and has the mountain gun profile, just no lettering! image.jpg
