Factory Combat K/L Grip Question
Hi Guys and Gals
I know someone who is selling a 686-2 with what appears to be square butt factory finger groove combat grips. They have medallions on them from what I remember.
Anything else I should look for? I was planning on dropping to see him today and removing the grips to check for any type of factory marking like I've seen on other grips.
The price is pretty good on the revolver. I think I could pick it up for about $375 or $400. I was planning on just flipping the grips.
I've read some of the recent threads in the for sale forums and see depending on the grip size/style and condition they're running $150 and up.
That would make for a cheap beat around 686 for me.
Thanks for the help!

Mike it is cheap enough to be a no brainer if in good enough condition just get it.
A picture afterward of the grips can let you know just how much of a steal it was.

I have/had square butt combats on my Md 16. However, I never liked how they looked and felt. The finger grooves are not positioned for my hand. I swapped them for factory targets. But just because I don't like them doesn't make them desirable. They are. While not as desirable as the round butt combats they are certainly worth $150 or more if condition is excellent. And, as you said, that would make for a very economical 686. When you take them off, look for a date stamped on one of the panels. Post some pics when you get a chance. And good luck!

As loeman said, those combat stocks don't fit very many hands and because of that, were sold or traded off by many owners. I even know a gent who threw his set out after buying a new 617 many years ago! But they have become a must-have piece of S&W history, I suppose because of scarcity as well as the beautiful wood figure some of them exhibited. Also, the wood stocks on today's new guns don't hold a candle to the ones from the "good old days."
I have one square-butt set of K-frame combats and keep them on the 6" no-dash 617 with which they came mainly because I seldom shoot that gun. My 4" no-dash 617 that sees more range time wears checkered targets all the time. I have a set of K-frame round-butt combats that are on the 2-1/2" 66-4 I've never shot and a square-butt set on a 6" 629-1 that actually are comfortable for me because they position my knuckles so that they aren't bumped by the gun's trigger guard.
If the combats on that 686 are nicely-figured, they could sell for an amount that might surprise you!

Well I put down the $70 I had in my pocket. He said he would sell it for $400.
$330 more to go next time I swing by his shop.
I say that's a good deal for a 686-2 with combats.

You get the deal of the week award. In my area, a 686 with rubber grips is in the $750 range. Good catch!

Will do.
Forgot to mention it's missing its rear sight. Apparently it comes with some type of rail on top. It wasn't mounted when I saw it so I have no clue what it is.
Now the search is on for a rear sight for a 686-2. Or maybe set up some optics on it. Who knows!

FWIW.....If the stocks you describe are in really good shape you should easily get the $150 price you mention and probably much more if you are patient in selling them. I picked some up a couple of months ago for a 17-6 I have that needed the correct stocks.....I lucked into the stocks for a little under $130, but I realize I was very lucky in finding them at that low of a price.

Ok so it might need a yoke retention screw.
I took the side plate off and when I put the screw back in the cylinder is sluggish opening. I backed off the screw and it opens fine.
Did this -2 have the spring loaded screw? Or can I use one in place of the screw that's there? Thanks guys!
Pics to come soon!

Looks like a nice clean shooter. The targets look more at home (original) but the combats look ok too.
A rear sight should be easily obtainable. I saw one on ebay but didn't state blade height. IIRC, .146 would work.
ETA: Although I'm not an expert, I'd just fit (file) the yoke screw you now have and call it good.
BTW, congrats on the 686.

Hi Michael I hate to be the bearer of bad news.
I just thought you may not be aware and should be,
I think Bubba altered your combats.
