Default Q re: forcing cone distances

How come the distance between the cylinders and forcing cones on all my S&W revolvers, new and old) are so close but, with Rugers, there is a much greater gap? What is the significance between the two?

Technically, i couldn't say- but i have blown out the force cone on a Ruger. I also got more "sand in the face"? I think the lockup and b/c gaps are different and important on both. I'm learning all the time and can't really explain why sometimes people say, smiths are quality and rugers are cheap. I can tell you rugers take quite a beating. I have a redhawk that has seen levels of powder my 29 hasn't. Ive put loads in a gp100 that ive put in a 686 + and locked the cylinder till it cooled. I dont know why that happened either. I cleaned the gun and it works "better" now.
Im still learning everyday and more and more my hot rod loads seem fewer and far between.
I would say from experience the Rugers handle hotter loads so maybe they need a wider gap? My smiths have always liked factory or reduced loads. AND have smaller gaps.

To me it looks like all it would need is a new barrel. But I'm not a gunsmith or manufacturer so what do I know?

I thought the same. I was hoping they would just replace the barrel. You're right. They offered me a new one after they said the whole thing needed to be replaced. Still dont know why. The only thing i noticed was rub marks on the frame where the grip is towards the back due to the recoil.
