Default When it Rains it Pours...Model 64s

Well maybe it’s not a flood, but two in nine weeks is certainly a nice shower for me! In another thread I wrote how I had long been waiting for just the right Model 64 to appear. In April it finally did, a superb, one owner, Md 64 no dash with 4 inch tapered barrel. So, that should satisfy my Md 64 needs right? Wrong!

I stroll into a LGS last week looking for nothing in particular, just looking, when the salesperson who knows me well, motioned me over to the counter with a big smile on his face as he pulls out a Model 64-2 with a 2 inch barrel and in a condition that appears to be nearly new. Arrrgghhh…I don’t need this, and anyway the price is going to be too much. After looking at the $440 dollar price tag, I knew it was going to be mine. The original magnas, box and docs was just icing on the cake.

It is true that Md 64s are pretty common, but finding them in the condition I wanted was a wait of well over a year. This one dates to November 1984 and was produced in the short-lived Lear Siegler ownership period.

It looks nicer than mine; and, I paid about the same price a few weeks ago with no box or docs. Mine has the pinned barrel and is from 1980. It looks like you stole it to me. . .a round butt, a snub, and stainless steel. I'm thinking it's a $650 gun.

Lovely! I happened to pick up one last year with SS sights and killer grips.

Very nice pair . . . but your search may not be over. Now that you have the 2" and 4", your search can focus on a 3" to fill out your Model 64 trifecta.

Good luck, Russ

Wel done, especially on that 2". There's a bunch of the "CDC" marked guns out there that to me are bit on the rough side. I've wanted one for a while but couldn't find a nice non-marked at a price I could afford so I moved on.

Enjoy!

Good luck, Russ
It's very interesting but I had a chance at one just about a month ago. The same LGS where I bought the other two had a very nice 3 inch Md 64. It had no LEO markings, no box, no docs and non original stocks. I certainly would have liked to have it, but the price was WAAAAYYYY too much even with all the original stuff. Had to let that one go...and in about a week it was.

They would look good with brass T-grips, especially when the patina starts showing up.

The pencil bbl 64s are not easy to come by. IIRC, they were made for only one year. If I'm wrong, please correct me out there! It was a grail gun for me, and I found one in LNIB conditition. While I dearly love my casino 64 HBs, this one carries lighter IWB and shoots just as well.

Thanks Kaaskop49. I'm with you on the "Pencil" 64s. If I was forced to sell one of the two pictured here, it would be the 2 inch. However, S&W DID make them for more than one year. Mine is from '74 and I believe the Md 64s started in 1970. Another favorite gun of mine is a Nickel Md 10 with a 5 inch tapered barrel made for the Detroit Police.

Hi loeman, I find it funny that something as ordinary and humdrum as a pencil bbl 64 could be a "grail gun," yet that was the case. It was also a "time capsule:" the cylinder release latch lug came loose just as they did on the early 70s stainless jobs (which it is!), and it was just a smidge out of time on one chamber, just like in the 70s. Shooting corrected this.

Still kicking myself for passing up the ANIB 6" pencil bbl 10 a pal had. Remember asking myself what I would do with it. Don't ask myself this ? so much, anymore. Good shooting!

2 nice 64's you have there! I have a 4", 64-3. It is heavy barrel. It handles and shoots so naturally for me. As for a 2" 64, none for me. Did buy a 10-5, 2" RB in March. So far, I am really liking it! Bob

What's not to like, Bob! Although I'm a J-hound, I find it nearly impossible to pass up a RB 10. For me, they shoot as well as the 4" models. I just hold them when they fire.
