These were sold (and probably manufactured) long after that book was published, and probably after the upcoming 4th edition was sent off for printing, as well.

A member or two that bought one several weeks ago posted his had no MG logo but was identical in every other way, even SKU#. Why would anybody want to resale one! It was probably a 200-500 gun run for a distributor in Ohio about 2012, IIRC. Nothing to keep S&W and/or the distributor from making another run.

Hmmm.... learn something new everyday.
I thought the purpose of a "mountain gun" was a smaller, lighter , more compact model with enough knockdown power in an emergency to defend yourself from 4, or 2 legged animals while hunting, hiking, etc. I always equated them to the "backpacker" from Ruger or even the PD models (629pd) from S&W. Light weight and powerful for situations when you wont recall even feeling the recoil.

This is similar, but since it is 22lr you just shoot your companion in the knee so you can escape the bear.

I dont care who you are, that right there is funny. I dont have to out run the bear, I just have to out run you.
Very cool little revolver though. 10 shot it appears. Would love to own one but never even heard of such a thing, forget about actually seeing one in the wild for sale.

That should be the basic model 4" 617. Unfortunately it isn't.

I think S&W equates "Mountain Gun" with a half lug tapered barrel.

When the 617 Mountain Gun was offered some weeks ago there were several threads posted here (see one below). They appeared to have been offered (this recent offer anyway) by only one source and it seems there weren't many available as they were gone in a couple days. All the ones that have shown up here were made in 2012 and we have only guesses about where they've been since then. I've spent a fair amount of time searching the web for more references but so far haven't found additional information. If anyone knows more, please share.

I got mine a few weeks ago at Mobile Shooting Center. They didn't have any more 4" but they had a 6" barrel. Apparently the 617 is hard to come by now-a-days.

These 617 Mountain guns are cool enough, especially if they don't say "Mountain gun" on them.
I don't think, however, that they will enjoy the price gains of the lugless 617s(production numbers aside). They simply have more class.

Too bad, those look too shiny for my taste. I would have preferred S&W has stayed true to their other MGs finish.

I am an owner and active shooter of 3 617s and 2 Model 63s. My hand much prefers the K-frame over the J. My 6"bbl. 617 is way too muzzle heavy for speed shooting steel but my 4" 617s are OK. The so-called 617 "Mountain Gun" would be much better for steel shooters.
Too bad I was asleep at the switch on the MGs.

An interesting note:
Stick your index finger in the trigger guard, with the hammer un-cocked.
Let go of the gun, the 617 MG settles towards the butt,,,
All my other 617's settle forward as they are barrel end heavy.
I would guess a Model 18 balances like that,,, probably the 17's too??
The Model 617 MG just wants to stay in your hand!!

I picked one of these up and mine doesn't have the mountain gun text on the barrel. It's a great range gun- one of my favorites! Perfect balance and great accuracy as good as I can point it. Wish I had got a second!

There was a resale recently here on the forum for a lightly used MG.
$1,100. That's the only one I know of. Nothing to keep S&W from running another batch if demand is there.

I'll reitterate that it makes little sense not to have a stainless version of the Model 18 with six or ten chambers. I'm surprised S&W thinks most would prefer a full lug .22....to soak up all that recoil......

And when it does reappear I would recommend being faster on the I'll take it button . They'll start coming around.

This gun came with the fired cartridge package dated:
11.12.2012
It was shipped from the factory:
April, 2013.
They sat on them for a while. Wonder what that was all about.
Anyone have any info on who ordered them up and how many were built?

The distributor sat on them even longer. Must have been slow sellers and/or poorly advertised. I believe they were made for a distributor in Ohio? Maybe? I just wanted a MG barrel to put on my 617-4 and performance center said none were available. I lucked into one of that last group they released. I'm hoping they'll make some more. VERY neat gun!! Shown with its friends 617-4; 617-6; 63-5

Would you please post a picture of your Model 617 Mountain Gun with the six inch barrel? I am interested in seeing how it is configured.
Thank you,

We may not need a "hate" button, but we darned sure need a "jealous" button.
And S&W is AFU here - this is a model that serves a purpose, when so many of the recent releases are borderline silly. Even with the cursed lock, I would happily buy at least one of these.
