Default 625-8 5.5 LB trigger pull-light strikes

Just picked up a used 625-8 JM. Sweet trigger, but I knew it was light and likely to not set off primers. At home I measured 2.25# SA and 5.5 DA. Sure enough, it would fire about 25%-50 of Winchester primers, some on second strike. I have plenty of Federal primers, and I will try them, although I turned in the strain screw since my range trip, since i don't need such a light pull, especially with such a smooth action.
I got some decent info from prior posts here on the form. I did turn the strain screw in a half turn and the DA pull went to about 6.25#. The head of the screw is still partway out of the frame about the thickness of 2-3 business cards. It has the Wilson Combat #178 custom spring kit, although I don't know what trigger rebound spring was installed. I presume the original owner left the Wilson spring installed. It is flat, while the one in the bag has a groove along it's length. I did not check the length of the firing pin. My plan is to see how far I have to turn it to light off federal primers reliably and see what the trigger pull is like at that point. I run my 8" scoped python with a 7.5 trigger and it weighs about 1.5# more than the 625-8. I'd be happy with a trigger pull under 7# on this gun.

The strain screw should be tight, all the way in. Proper trigger pull of 8 lbs is achieved by reducing the length of the strain screw.

Seat your Federal primers .004" to .006" below flush and it should work fine with the 5.5# trigger. Lock-tite the strain screw in the position that gives you the desired pull - use blue or purple.Rebound spring has nothing to do the force of the firing pin strike.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

I have my revolvers adjusted to a 9.0 lbs. DA trigger weight. Because past experience has shown 8.0 lbs. is perfectly reliable with CCI standard pressure primers this is not the case with CCI Magnum primers or with Remington UMC. BTW, I like Remington cases for reloading so will pick up one of the 250 rounds paks when they are on sale to refresh my stock of fired cases. I also enjoy shooting my hand loads in 357 Magnum.

PS; I also have some of those Federal Shoe boxes of primers and find them distinctly inconvenient to reload with, so Federal primers for me are nothing except backup.

What's inconvenient, flipping? I used Fed exclusively for years because my Python would not reliably set off others in DA mode. I used them for everything to keep life simple. Then I got an accurate 45 acp load using Win. primers, so I bought those. I have CCI for 9mm due to a joing purchase. For cases, I'm a starline guy.
