Default 460 mag xtp hand load questions

I am wanting to use 250gr Hornady xtp bullets for 45 colt to load up full power practice loads for the 460 S&W I have. I have read that the thinner cup bases on the jackets of these can create problems with the forcing cone and top strap cutting when max pressures are involved.

I am wanting to use these bullets for practice mainly because they are what I can get up here in fairbanks AK and because they are affordable. I wus they had the 240gr mag xtps but no one up here does.

Has anyone extensively tried any of the non magnum rated bullets available with the 460? Are there certain bullets or load combos I should avoid? Remember as I said these loads are just for target practice not hunting.

Posted this on this forum many times before.

This bullets are not rated for the velocity your 460 will produce, 1600 fps per Hornady 9th Edition.

If are are going to do full power loads you need to use XTP MAG (rated 2200).

I had jacket separations when I tested the 250 at near max 460 velocity roughly 1950 fps.

The XTP MAGS are in stock at Powder Valley.

Excessive top strap cutting is usually associated with shooting light for caliber loads at max pressures. Some ball powders have also been said to contribute.

The 460 is a hot rod and top strap erosion is inevitable but self limiting. It comes with the power and I don't consider it an issue.

Enjoy your new revolver.

Be safe and good luck

Speer lists some very potent 460S&W reduced recoil loads
for their 250gr 45 Colt GDHP and 260gr 45 JHP Speer #12
and Speer #14 manuals.. Fastest one is 1591fps. Still rather
POTENT. Pleasant to shoot too..These bullets are only HALF
what 460Mag bullets cost...
l enjoy these midrange loads in my 460...Guess l am kinda
like our neighbor JD Troutman when l was a kid.. He had a
66 Plymouth Belvedere with a 426 Street Hemi and 4 Speed..
Drove the monster only on weekends and l never saw it go
over 50..
Like JD's Hemi l just don't need those Full Power loads to enjoy
my 460

.

45 Colt or 460 cases? What barrel length?

If in 45 Colt cases you can load away & not exceed the bullets 1600 fps recommended max. with slow powders.

In 460 cases, with non-magnum bullets, 37gr/I4227 is my max. load in my 3-1/2" bbl., with those bullets.

You can use them with reduced loads of moderate powders too. Just NOT full power 460 Mag loads.

460 brass and 14" barrel. I have used 300gr non magnum XTPs with no issues and the velocity is only around 100fps lower than the 250s by the data.

I really want a lot of hot loads (few hundred) so that I can learn the gun before I hunt with it. Not that I am new to big bores or the 460 in general but I am new to shooting a scoped revolver off a bipod. Especially one where the eye relief is short enough I cant fully extend my arms which affects my hold on the grip when prone.

I guess I could try it and see what kinds of groups I get as long as I'm not risking damage to my gun.

and the XTP 300 is rated for higher velocity you are shotting them at.---Check the reference I provide above.

wont be so with the XTP 250 though.

You could shoot the 200 FTX if you really want full loads.

Use a different scope if you need more eye relief or use a red dot.

You dont have to wild on loading with the 460, a 300 grain XTP MAG at 1500 fps is midrange load and will take a Moose with little issue if placed right.

Personally I use premium bullets when hunting- I'll be using a CPS 260 grain North Fork bullet when I come to Alaska in August- worked exceptionally well on my last trip on grizzly.

The cost of bullets is cheap compared to hunt and my safety.

Be safe

I understand the power of the 460 on paper at least which is why I bought one in the first place. I really wanted a 14" scoped one for longer range pistol hunting in weapon restricted areas in MT. On deer I'm sure I wont need the penetration offered by a Swift or other awesome bullet like that. For bears up in the interior of AK where I live now I was caring maxed out 300gr XTP mags because I wanted to shoot one with a pistol. Now that I have this unwieldy beast I'll probably use my open sight 454 for bears
