Default 17-4

I've got a line on a near perfect looking 17-4. Anything special to look for or is there any reason to avoid this model?
Thanks

No reason to avoid. Anything below $700 would be a decent deal if it is really "near perfect".

Original box, papers, wrap. No wear. Just a faint turn line. $700.

The first time I signed on to this forum was when I bought these two revolvers, a Mod 17 and a 17-4.

Came here to find out a mfg date. And I liked the place & hung around awhile, even joined the SWCA.

I think that Mod 17-4 is the newest rimfire I own.

Buy that 22 for 7 bills if it's still available.

I bought a Model 17-4 with 8 3/8 inch barrel about 7 years ago that was like new and I got it for $500.00. It is my most accurate S&W revolver and a favorite to shoot. I put a set of S&W K frame Combat Grips on it because I like them and it would be the last S&W revolver I would sell.

Love the gun. Shoots great. Hate the grips, too small for my hands.
Suggestions, please.

Consider a Tyler T-Grip Adapter.

This is a -5 but the pic is more to agree with the last couple of posters.

There are as many k-frame grips as there are 1911 grips. I have medium-small hands, and for range shooting I like pachmayr rubber grips with the finger grooves. Just make sure you keep the originals in the box so you don't mix them up or lose them.

As for wood grips, there are a million choices out there. However, I normally don't go for S&W target grips unless they come with the gun. I figure if you are going to mismatch the gun and grips, may as well get something comfortable and/or striking.Opinions vary My "dream" grips would be ones in really nice mammoth ivory, but they cost a fortune.

Edit: at one point I had four model 17s, but am down to just two now. It's hard to overestimate the value of a S&W k-frame revolver. They are works of mechanical art, and darn pretty too.

17-4 operations guide:

Shoot to heart's content
clean
Shoot some more
Let you kid's and grandkids inherit to keep up the tradition.

You might want to get a .22 caliber bore snake to keep in your shooting bag to clean up while shooting dirty .22 ammo. I dont have to use mine on the LR guns much, but the .22 WMR needs a swab every so often.
