Range report - Smith 64 "Airweight" Custom, Semi-Fitzed Snubby
This very business-like customized Model 64 is a dream to shoot. I have put several hundred rounds through it and a few times I had light strikes or what seemed like light strikes but it was always the same ammunition, so I will probably turn the screw a little and be done with it.
However, with 6 rounds stuffed in it I am completely satisfied with it as a defensive weapon. I took a Texas CHL test with it (unofficially - but I am an instructor so I know what I'm doing) and passed with flying colors. I had my instructor required 225 points easily.
The interesting things that this now little gun does (remember, it started life as a 4", with the worst trigger ever made) that differ from my other EDC K-frame snubby is that the incredible checkering feels so great right in the palm of my hand. My Model 10 wears bonded ivory stocks and I'd never really noticed that they were not flush with the frame until I shot this M 64 with its interesting wood stocks and backstrap checkering. It just melts into my hand and delivered accurate shots time after time.
I am far more precise, accuracy-wise, with the 2" Model 10, but I've been shooting it for years and years. I'm not concerned with X ring shots with this gun - I practiced point shooting with both eyes open, no aiming - and round after round went into center mass. That's more than satisfactory for its purpose.
The other interesting thing is that the trigger is not a typical S&W trigger anymore. It's very smooth and doesn't actually stack like a standard S&W trigger. It's DAO so I learned to go slowly because it just goes all the way, nothing interferes or tells you where you're at it. It just shoots!
TheShootist1894 did a wonderful job!!!! Muchas gracias!

Chief:
My Army Special has a checkered back strap, and I love the control it affords me. As you can see, the stocks are smooth Ivory, but the back and front strap are checkered. I believe that this may have been done at the Colt factory, as there is a rework mark stamped on the frame. I have not lettered it, but as you can see, the hammer was rebuilt, and matches the checkering on the frame.
Could we see a photo of the checkering? I followed your original post, and love the look of the customizing that was done.
Thanks for the range report also, glad that it is living up to its looks!!
Best Regards, Les

Glad to hear it Master Yoda. I also started qualifying with revolvers when the law changed. Thank you for posting the pictures.

Thanks for the picture, Chief!! That's a darn nice job TheShootist1894 did on that checkering, and the rest of the package as well. That is just a great, practical, unique, beautiful and serviceable gun all rolled into one.
Congratulations on a great and unique firearm that ought to last more than a lifetime!!!
Best Regards, Les

Thanks, Les. I figured you'd like that checkering. I might have him do another one soon!
I'm thinking that I'll enjoy carrying it and shooting it for a very long time and then down the road a grandson or a grand nephew will wind up with it and he'll treasure it due to the overall work, and utility, and because of the engraved Senior Chief personalization. But I hope whichever one of them gets it that it will be decades from now!!!!
HEY! Maybe a great grandson???!!!
