Default to refinish or not 586-7

Has anyone ever had a good outcome by sending in there firearm to Smith and Wesson for repair and refinishing? I have an older 586-7 pc gun with a canted barrel, some blemishes where someone tried to fix it, and worn out night sights. It has a blued satin/beadblast finish. Its just hard to look at a gun that I like so much and see it in the condition it is , Could they restore it back to its factory self? how bad does it really affect the guns value? a few hundred bucks in the negative?

I have had the Combat Action Package done on two revolvers, one blued and one stainless.

I have been pleased with the work and with the returned product.

They are done, with this package, as a bead blast finish and I like the looks of it.

Thinking about having another sent in, but this will be to have it refinished to a normal blue.

As far as value goes I am not to concerned what it does to it because I will no longer be around or will be to bad off to care when that becomes an issue.

I did it for my own pleasure and satisfaction.

Sounds like your revolver is pretty beat up.

Having it refinished probably won't hurt the value much since, in its current condition value has already taken a significant hit.

You won't add value doing a refinish, but value is already down.

Hard to imagine a good economic reason to redo this gun.

I'd inquire with Customer Service if they will send you a free shipping label to fix the canted barrel. While it's there, have it refinished. S&W's fee for that is surprisingly attractive and they do first rate work, including restoring any markings. If you like your guns 'just so', you should do it, cuz you'll like what you get back. I'd at least look into it. Shipping cost for handguns are not inconsequential.

It never was a "collector" gun to begin with, so repairing and refinishing won't hurt the value. The question is whether or not you want to put more money into it than you'll ever get out of it.

Only redo it if you will keep it til you die.

Default 586-7

Thanks guys for the replies, the gun does have some collector value to me as its a 586-7 PC 4inch ported model, dont know how many were made , but irrelevant anyway, yes I plan on keeping it a few years anyway and not looking to make money on it at all, maybe trade at some point or another, Really just wanted to know how good Smith does their repair work , and guess I will send it off..... good idea about asking if they can fix the cant and have them send a label.

S&W refinished a blued M 36 to nickel for me and it came back looking like a new gun. I will do it again in a heart beat.

I paid $210.00 for it new in 1982 and $250.00 for refinish. I would never sell the gun for $460.00 so in my opinion, you will gain a resale value for it, or you will have, as I do a much nicer looking pistol.

I didn't even know S&W would do a refinish in nickel. That's nice to know, and the price ain't bad compared to what others charge.

Kernel, they have nickel refinishing listed on their site in the performance center precision gunsmithing section. They show a charge of $275 for a high bright finish in blue, nickel and SS.
