Got my M-19 back from S&W today
EtI bought this gun 35 years ago from a friend. At the time it had a trigger job done to it so it was a very light trigger. Over the years the S/A pull got even lighter to where it was really a "feather" trigger on single action. Then I noticed a little while ago that it developed a "push-off" problem, I didn't really think either of those things were a big deal because its my nightstand gun and it will only be fired by me and D/A.
Well I was thinking, not getting any younger and someday this gun will belong to one of my children and I really don't want to hand down an unsafe gun.
So off to Smith and Wesson to have them check it out. I also thought the cylinder end shake was a tad loose. They reported back that indeed it needed the cylinder work as well as the push off problem fixed and they noticed something I didn't, the forcing cone was beginning to erode. (classic M-19)
So, they fixed all three things and the gun functions like a new gun and the forcing cone is sharp and square.
Great Job S&W on the repairs and the cost was reasonable too.
They did put a small scratch in the face plate around one of the screws, but I am not sending it back again for that. Its not a safe queen its a shooter, but it did bug me for awhile (getting over it)

I understand how to correct push off and end shake.
What does the factory do to correct the forcing cone problem?

Congrats. Love it when someone takes the time to have an "oldie but goodie" maintained and turned back to being a shooter.

Interesting about the forcing cone erosion. I have a 586 with a good deal of FC erosion and might consider having SW check it out.

This is what forcing cone erosion looks like. Somebody had a good time with this one!

That type of erosion is often caused by ball powder with a hot load. It is essentially a sandblasting type operation.

Very nice 19. I have a 6" and my 4" 66-2. Both were duty guns. Some of my favorites

Glad to hear that you are keeping her as a shooter, and should be a beauty to hand down.

Yes, that must be right. The overall barrel length is 1/16" shorter. You cannot tell the barrel was removed and the shoulder cut back. Great job!
Also the gap between the cylinder and forcing cone is a tight .006 which is what you want. And just like before the work, no cant in the barrel
All that's left to do is shoot it and re sight it in.
