I have been shooting a 44 magnum since I was 10 . My hands have never been " bloodied , bruised or blistered " . I currently own 3 , 2 / 4" barrel and a 6.5" . All smith 29's . In a normal session I will go through several hundred rounds of 44 mag , varying from target to full bore ( and lots of full bore ) . My most shot 44 has a 4" barrel and a set of PC Magna grips , the smaller wooden ones w/rounded off end butt and I have never used a shooting glove . Proper stance is important with any larger handgun . Relax your elbows and let the recoil come back through your whole body . Watch Jerry Miculek video's and you will learn how to shoot large bore revolvers , accurately and comfortably .

Every serious revolver shooter needs at least one quality .44 Mag or other big bore revolver, even if they don't shoot it often or shoot max loads. It's the principle of the issue. Don

I sure hope I can become a serious revolver shooter someday.

I've been shooting over 45 years, own somewhere in the neighborhood of 45 revolvers, with 30-some being S&W's, and not a single one a .44 (nor do I have any want, or "need" for one).

I hope someday I'll be able to be a "serious" revolver shooter. Just sayin'

Few need a .44 magnum, most have one safely tucked away. Too powerful, too expensive to shoot but still they have one. It is a beauty to see, satisfying to hold, feel the power it yields, but still it intimates most and is rarely shot. Have one if you must, shoot it if you can, know your limits. For me it is my sidearm on the long trails and dark nights out in the bush.

Default .44 Magnum

In a word, "Yes." You'll never know the pleasure of taming the beast if you don't.

If you live where I do or own a farm where I do they are a real good idea. Black bears rarely attack but then again so do people. I want to be prepared for either. In the woods around my house or on my farm I'll have the 629 hanging on my shoulder. It pulls quickly from a tanker holster. It should give me time to react to a charging bear should that ever happen. I've been threatened by bears more than once in my own yard. They especially like it when I cook out on the grill but I generally keep a 12 ga. handy for that. But walking in the woods or working there something easier to carry is called for. For me it's a .44 magnum loaded with dangerous game rounds. Yes they are expensive but I don't use them for target practice. They are strictly for protection.

IMHO

factory 44 magnum is too much recoil, if you're not from Texas.
It is expensive.

I bought the revolver, not the caliber.
I fell in love with the unknown United Sporting Arms SAAs. I finally found one for sale in mint condition for $300, but it was 44 magnum. I bought it anyway just to fondle and admire. I bought the revolver, not the caliber.

Fast forward a year later and I am reloading the 44mag to hit 1000fps + and now LOVE the caliber and all 44mag sixguns. I also discovered that 44mag hawglegs are the best buy for quality. Most have had a cylinder shot thru and then put away.

Recoil is now manageable and the 44mag is cheap to shoot.

I shoot mostly silhouette at 100 yards + and the 44mag is spectacular for that.

Need.................... well I've survived 64 years..... 54 of which have been spent bumming around in "Penn's Woods", with two summers in Alaska (mostly working construction while in Law School; out and about, but not in the 'bush" ).............. so my answer is.... no.

Now if you are facing "Griz" or a mad Moose............... maybe!!!!

Now the whole "want" thing..................is a slippery slope!!!!

I can feel the hate already.

I love Smiths, I have Smiths dating back to 1859. I have a Target Model Triple Lock, a Wolf and Klar, a Model 1-1/2, a 2nd Model with a 3 digit SN. A Model 1917 with original lanyard and half moon clips.

I would never have a Smith .44 Magnum.

Very pretty.

Nowhere near robust enough. The only .44 Magnum to have is a Ruger, since Colt no longer makes them.

OP, see that you have tried one. Try a 4” or longer barreled model and then make your own decision. There is no mandated requirement by way of manhood, credibility as a revolver owner etc involved.
I personally like big bore handguns, but not necessarily in the hand cannon category. The recoil is different than with smaller bored guns and a heavy old slug moving at moderate velocity is still a very effective means of dispatching targets.
The 44 special and 45 Colt “non-magnumized” are very comfortable to shoot and are adequate for almost any practical application of a wheel gun.

Only YOU can make that decision! I have 2 29's. -2, 4" & -3 6.5 inch. Got the 1st last November, and the 2nd in April. Felt I NEEDED them. I don't. Like my 25-15 Colt, and 625 JM better. We all have our own reasons. Bob

Another OLD post. Should have looked at the date.

I know this is an older thread...but I thought I'd chime in.

Like the OP, I'm not all that old (41). I honestly have zero reason to own a 44...I don't hunt, I don't backpack in a place that has large dangerous game.

...but I own a 4" 629 nonetheless. Like everyone is saying, thee's just something about a 44 magnum that is just a joy to shoot. To me, its that threshold of pain/pleasure where it will definitely smack you in the hand...but not a level like the larger calibers will punish you. 44 spcl is a joy to shoot in a N-frame and I honestly cannot wait until I finally get into reloading, 44 magnum is massively versatile and can customized in so many ways. Add a lever action in 44 magnum and you have a set so versatile, there's little you can't do with it.

Me? I target shoot with mine on occasion when I want that hand-thumper range session, and I'm always happy when I do.

I concur with the poster above. There is just something about 44 magnums that I love. While I LOVE my 686 L frames, I enjoy shooting (and carrying my 629 5" in the woods.)
In fact I love the 44 so much, I just put a deposit on a 629 3 inch.

Well, without reading all the comments, if I could have just 1 gun, and carrying concealment is not a consideration, it would be a 44mag. Why?? First off, you can shoot 44 specials in it, so you do not have to always take the magnum recoil. Second of all, if you are a handloader or get into handloading, you can make this into anything between 45acp, and 44 magnum characteristics. Personal protection, well it is hard to beat, loaded with something you are comfortable shooting. Accurate caliber. Good for hunting, and long range target shooting. Now as for barrel length, and if I only had 1 choice, it would be 6". Second choice would be 5" full lug either the Classic or the Classic DX ( rather rare). So to answer your question I would say yes to a model 29 or 629. I like older pinned and recessed. i have a 29-5 Classic DX 5" full lug, and a 629 no dash 6", and if I had to sell my guns, they would be the last to go.

I'm not a collector. I'm a shooter that rarely trades or sells off the old guns when buying a new one resulting in an accumulation. I also reload. From that perspective I'd tell you to get a 6" 29 or 629, preferably one new enough to have endurance enhancements. Reason being is that these guns are such a pleasure to shoot. Buy some magnum brass and load them light and you'll have pure shooting pleasure. If you're basically just a collector rather than an avid shooter, well then quit driving up the price of the guns I like to shoot.

I have a " love affair " with my 4" smith 29's and the 629 . I took my 29-10 , " 4" bought a set of PC Magna's for it . They were somewhat beat up , knicks and gouges but was thankful to even find a set . I had to " fire lap " the barrel to remove several tight spots . It is w/o a doubt , a real favorite of mine to shoot and accurate beyond words . I have a LH belt holster for it . To me , the 4" barrel is just about right for my needs . I hand load for it , everything from " mild to wild " . I don't find the recoil " extreme " even with full magnum loads . Regards, Paul

If CCW is a consideration,I think the 4.2 in. bbl. Model 69 is a better choice than the 2 3/4 in. bbl.It is a good size 44 Mag.for just about everything except competition and hunting. Most states have a minimal bbl. length for hunting(4 in.) and this makes you legal for everything.I just like the way this revolver balances.Second choice is a 5 in.629 Classic.IMHO.

Old thread, but was still was a good read.

I have owned a Ruger Red hawk 44 Mag for many years now. I always wanted a 629 with the 8 3/8" barrel. My wife asked me why I needed another 44 Mag and I answered " Because you just never know when we could get attacked by a Grizzly bear". she rolled her eyes and said "Three aren’t any Grizzly bears in Kansas" I now own a S&W PC 629 just in case a Grizzly bear shows up. Want's vs needs!

Be aware that the S&W webpage shows two 629 "classics", both full underlug: one a 5" and one a 6" (or maybe it was 6-1/2"). The 6" has the number 163638, and the 5" has the number 163636. My 5" is marked 163636A on the box. I don't remember what is marked on the gun itself ... it's in its holster (on me), and can't be disturbed until tonight before bedtime!

Yes, you should own a .44, I have 6 at the moment. It's a great gun and a very nice cartridge. You should have one, but that doesn't mean you have to shoot magnum loads out of it.

I own 3 .44 magnums and 3 .44 Spl revolvers, all S&W. None of my magnum revolvers have ever seen a mag load, I like to keep them around 950 fps to 1050 fps. For my shooting I have no reason for atomic loads.

Follow this advice and you'll love the .44.

If you reload, I’d say definitely get a 44 Magnum. It has a wide variety of loads from 44 special, 44 Magnum, target and hunting loads.

If you don’t reload, it could be costly to shoot.

Longer barrel 44 Magnums 7 inches and up are very manageable and don’t have much recoil. The most punishing are snubbies up to 3” and lightweight materials. Lightweight snubbies are the worst first choices of 44 Magnums.

If you can handle a 158 grain 357 Magnum in a Snubby, you can handle a 44 Magnum.

Exactly. The N frame is the ultimate S&W revolver platform, and the 44 is the most versatile handgun cartridge, though reloading is necessary to unlock all the goodness.

I specifically recommend a square butt N frame. Mine is a recent manufacture M29-10, and with magnas and a t-grip it is just perfect for my hand. I can't quite get my round butts N frames to fit my hand as well.

I didn't know if mine would get shot all that much when I got my first 44 mag a year and a half ago (6 1/2" 629-6) Looking at my shooting log I see it's gone with me on over 30 range trips. It might be only 20 or 30 rounds, but I do shoot it frequently. I don't reload, so the ammo cost is the main reason I don't bring more rounds. Just added the Mdl 69 4", so my meager ammo supply is in jeopardy. Still dreaming of a 29-2 or maybe a new 5". I made it through 60 years without one too, now I'm wondering how.

Seriously going into the 44 mag world is like a 10mm. You hear all sorts of horror stories about recoil, ammo costs, muzzle blast, etc. I'd like to be there when you first touch off a 44 and see little hearts popping over your head.

One at a time. Recoil isn't bad at all. There is a range of factory ammo that should meet your needs, whims, and desires. If you reload, which I don't, then the sky is the limit.

Ammo cost is slightly more than comparable 357 mag. A lot less than 44 special which you can also shoot in the 44 mag. I buy 44 spc for my Bulldog.

Lastly, all handguns esp magnum revolvers are loud. I'll get a lot of disagreement, but I think the 44 mag is slightly less loud than a 357 mag, but it's a moot point anyway. I could be crazy, but point is wear ear and eye protection for any caliber.

I had a 41 mag once too and liked it just as much, but I standardized on the 44.

I just got some Underwood's 305grain loaded/spec'd to 1325fps Hard Cast Keith's and damn.. those f-ers pack a wollup from my 3" M629 but are far from uncomfortable.. Unlike the .460 I borrowed a few years back.

I thought Mr. Sundles/Buffalo Bore didn't recommend shooting the 340's from a Smith but only from a Ruger or a DW but I could be mistaken. I know I won't be going heavier than the 305's myself; at 10 yards they started to wreck and pit my AR500 plate!

My most perfectly balanced Revolver, my 3" barreled M29-3

My sentiments exactly. I got a 3" M629 thinking I was only going to use hot Underwood and BB .44Special HC "Keith's" for the woods/mountain home. The first time I touched them off my thoughts were: "This is no different than my 5" 1911 with .45acp+P's", very pleasant.
Then I loaded some mid-grade/level 240 Fiocchi's in .44Mag and thought; "This is supposed to be a wrist breaker and all the pu$$y whining I hear?"
The 3" "N" frame is a 40oz all steel Revo and handles recoil and balances very well. Hell, 300 grain PPU loads rated at 1289fps were a big hit at the last farm day shoot I sponsored. The guys shot up nearly all of it I brought down and now I can't seem to find much of it. It was hands down the most borrowed gun and most shot load of the day between the 7 of us. 4 out of 7 had never shot a .44anything before!
Maybe I'm a freak for recoil but I really don't think that is the case.

Yep, everyone needs at least one .44 mag. Currently own two, both are model 29-3, with the 3 T's , paperwork and boxes . One is a 6" , and the other is the 10 3/8" barreled Silhouette target gun.
Love the big frame Smith's .

Default Mountain Backpacker with Grizzly engraving

I've read some posts about a very faint engraving of a Grizzly on the right sideplate of some Mountain Backpackers. I picked up one of these at a show some years ago, shot it once, cleaned it, and put it away. It now needs a new home.
The gun is very clean, apparently fired little, has the original rosewood grips, box and paper work.
I'd prefer to sell it to someone who will truly appreciated her for the rare bird she is.
I'm fairly new to this and am unsure about how to proceed.
I have more pictures if interested.

I haven't shot mine in a lot of years, not since getting a .44 Special. Even so, it is not for sale. It is the only gun that my wife ever bought for me. Who knows, I may get the urge to shoot it someday.

Need has nothing to do with it!

Back around 1990 or so, I was trying to decide whether I needed a .44 magnum or a .45 ACP revolver. Since my needs would be served by .44 spl level liads, and I was already casting and progressive reloading .45s for my 1911, I decided I needed the .45 revolver.

About 25 years later I decided I WANTED the .44 magnum, got one, cast and load progressive for it.

What's my point? Not sure myself. But buy what you want.

Don't know that anyone NEEDS one, but I sure love mine. I like 'em short, long and middle length. (Don't have the 10 or 8 3/8 inch guns)

I know someone said they have never had a bloody hand from shooting one, I have, but it was a .44 special that did it (Model 296 scandium frame).

I have a 2.5, 3, 4, 6 (x2) and a 6.5 inch. They range from July '56 to pre 2012.

I have carried the 2.5 and 3 inch as an off duty gun (qualified with and carry .44 special round) and hunted with the 6 inch Classic Hunter. The 6 inch NC Highway Patrol gun has not been fired and will not be by me. My first is the Pre-29, 6.5 inch and it was that one that began my interest in .44 guns.

.44 guns are so versatile depending upon how they are loaded. They make good self defense guns, good hunting guns and are a hoot to use for target shooting. My only complaint is that I don't reload and the ammo can be pricy.

Here are most of mine.

629-6 Camfour. 2.5 inch, fixed sight

I don't have an individual photo of the next one, so its the top one in the group photo.

629-3, three inch, ported, fixed sight, Lew Horton, Performance Center (one of about 495)

29 (no dash) four inch (came in the blue box)

29-2, NC State Highway Patrol 50th Anniversary Commemorative

Pre Model 29, shipped July, 1956

29-3, Classic Hunter

Why don't you reload. The 44 has got to be one of the easiest to reload. And 44 powder puff loads are a pure pleasure to shoot.

That may be a bit of an exaggeration, but nevertheless, you won't fully appreciate a 44 magnum until you own one - an N-frame, that is. S&W N-frames can seem unwieldy at times, but they tend to have smoother actions than K- or J-frames for some reason. You also won't fully appreciate the caliber unless you reload. And if you don't reload, it's as good a reason as any to start. The sweet spot between special and magnum ammo is where it's at: around 1000-1100 fps with a 240 grain bullet. Easy on the wrist, yet packs plenty of wallop. In addition, if you hunt, some of the Classic versions come pre-drilled and tapped for a scope.

I know you weren't directing this at me directly, but I'll reply none the less.

For me, it's space. We have a very small house and I simply do not have the space for a "proper" reloading setup. We're currently saving for a new home and once we move, that will be first on my short list.

They are Herrett grips. I have several sets. They are smaller than S&W grips and fit my small hands better. That gun came with "rubber" grips and I just never warmed up to them.

All of those are drop dead desirable! But that 2.5" barreled 629-6 is Super Hot! And with the Magnas and a Tyler-T.. I'm in the process of setting up 2 out of 3 of my 3" barreled .44Smiths in that exact grip configuration because it's worked so well for me with my "J" frames. The Goncalo Alves on my LHS work so well for me even with big hands.. so I'm leaving them on there.

Thanks for sharing those pics!

Default I'm a Recoil Junkie

I own several M629s, a M69, and a Couple of Redhawks, all in 44 Magnum. I have been Loading and Shooting the .44Mag/44Spl for over 50yrs. Recently I have become tired of the Venerable 44mag and needed a Change. I thought about the 454 Casull, but Can't stand the Look of the Ruger Super Redhawk, and don't care for Single action Revolvers Sooooo. Love my 460V and forgot about the 454. Went Directly to the 460. My standard Load is 46+ of H110 under a Hornady XTP 240gn Mag Bullet. At 72 years of age the 460 lets me know that I'm not Dead yet.

While a full-blown rock solid bench would be nice, you don't need one to reload. The Frankford Arsenal Platinum Series Reloading Stand, which can be found online, packs a lot into a relatively small package. It takes up little room, yet provides enough space to get the job done, it's surprisingly stable, and can be easily folded up and stored in a closet. You will, however, need some shelf space for powders, bullets, primers, clean brass, etc.

I recommend this particular folding bench out of personal experience. I bought one several years ago when I first got into reloading and mounted a Hornady single-stage press on it. And while I still fully intend to step up to a full-sized bench someday, this folding bench suits my needs well enough that a "proper" bench is no longer an urgent need.

If you really want to reload, there's no time like the present, because despite your intentions your next house may check all the right boxes, but nevertheless lack an ideal space for reloading, which is the situation I found myself in while house-hunting - and I had no intention of letting a good deal slip through my hands because of something like that. So you might as well make the most of what you've got now (assuming you can spare about 3 square feet of floor space where you can concentrate undisturbed on the task at hand).
