Default Model 64 2 inch - just a weird story and a $ question

I'm just curious - if I knew that S&W made a 2" M64 I had forgotten but last night I was a friend's house, we were talking guns, he dropped a gun on his coffee table, a small revolver, and since I had been at the dentist yesterday all I was carrying was my M642 so I put it next to his gun. Typically lookalikes for the most part I really didn't focus much on his gun, I know he owns at least one if not two J-frames, but he picked the 642 up and asked me how many rounds it held. I said five.....and then wondered why he would ask me that so I picked up his gun and opened the cylinder to see what it had in it.

Much to my surprise it felt larger than a j-frame but I hadn't paid attention yet and it was 6 rounds inside so I held the gun to the light - a Model 64 snubbie! - MAN, I wished I had my custom M64 with me.

http://smith-wessonforum.com/members...ng-2016-a.html

Anyway, I'm just curious - what does a 2" Model 64 sell for these days if you can find one?

Yes, yes, I liked it, and I'm tempted to find one, I have more K frame snubs than almost anything else, but first I need some expert advice on what the dollars might be.

Gracias.

That's interesting zipty6 - it has the bobbed hammer like mine. Is it DAO, too?

400 to 500 bucks is probably about right for a K frame snubby these days. Thanks!!!

It is DAO. The trigger is very smooth. I also ordered a few 4" DAO Model 64s from them for about $50 less. My understanding was that the 4" were for a Brinks contract. I don't know the origin of the 2", but they had them in stock at the same time.

Unfortunately, the 4" ones had to be sold during a time of financial need. The 2" Model 64 made the short list of keepers.

You would be lucky to find one like zipty6 for that kind of dough today....it seems they have a following....500 would get you one, maybe not as nice and not bobbed.

Likely correct - 2" K frames are highly desirable these days. 400 if the seller doesn't know the demand. 500 if he does. Heck, I paid more than 600, actually $650, I think, for my Model 15 2 inch, and that was a couple of years ago.

My thread on my acquisition of the customized M64 is detailed and unimportant but I can tell you that as a 4" heavy barrel re-import (if Brinks had it they took it out of the USA) the DAO trigger was the worst trigger I have ever encountered on a modern hand gun.

It's great now, of course.

Having a genuine 2" M 64 would enhance my addiction, I mean collection, errrrrr......collection addiction?

Personally witnessed a sale last weekend at a big show. Model 64 2" with original wood stocks, a April 1975 shipped gun sold for $600. No box or papers but very clean & tight.

Obviously not a 64, but purchased this 10-5 on GB in march for $320 shipped. Certainly nothing more than a shooter. I changed the beat factory R.B. factory stocks. Sure enjoy shooting it! Bob

Good luck with that!!!!!

Since 2" K frames are not manufactured any longer the holster makers don't have a lot of interest in them.

Dave Workman - D&D Gunleather - he's on this Forum if you can catch up to him. He can make a nice holster for it.

D&D Gunleather

Also, Mike 'Doc' Barranti, can do it, too:

I happen to have an old Assault Systems holster designed for small revolvers - if you search for them you'll find Elite Survival Systems and Delta Force Tactical Systems. They make them under one of those names, now. But if you want leather I'd contact Dave or Doc.

One other interesting option for an IWB - Bianchi makes a model called the 3S - I THINK!! - it's IWB for 2.5" or 3" revolvers. I can't recall for sure but I think 2.5", like for a snubbie M66. They're not terribly expensive. I obtained one and my local cobbler cut it back for me, eliminating the leather on the end that I didn't need.

The newest version of the 3S Pistol Pocket is nice in that the belt loops are very adjustable for cant. You can go pretty much all the way around, so FBI, neutral and cross-draw are all options. That holster will take anywhere from 2" to 3" barrels. I have one for my 2" Model 64 and it's what I use for IWB.

For OWB, the Galco Combat Master is another affordable choice. Currently, I use that or a Desantis Thumbreak Scabbard as the thumbreak helps to keep the hammer spur out of my ribs when fishing and hiking.

There are a few holster options out there if you look. I'm very pleased with my holsters from Lobo Gun leather, but I can't speak first hand about the products made under the new ownership. However, I understand that they are just as nice. The last time I checked, Sideguard makes more than one style for 2" K-Frames. Also, don't forget the king of snubby leather, Bobby Mac. Bobby Mac's holsters are not inexpensive, but he doesn't make holsters for 1911s or Glocks. Plenty of folks do that. He just makes fine leather holsters for snub nose revolvers. If you're looking for something in Kydex, the choices get very slim. JM Custom Kydex used to make an IWB in Kydex for the K-Frame, but I didn't see it cataloged after looking just now. If you really wanted one though, they probably still have the blanks. Just call them and ask.

I'd recommend Bobby Mac Holsters. I had him make a "DB Belt Holster" for my 2" Model 64 and the holster carries my Mod. 64 very securely and comfortably.

If you check the S&W Standard Catalogue, S&W did make the 64-4 in 2" Bobbed DAO for Brinks in 1997. I picked up mine from J&G in 2012 for $365.00. I carry it in an El Paso Saddlery "Street Combat". They still make it, great holster.

I have a LOBO holster from Ray for my Model 64 but have ordered holsters from the new owners and find the quality to be very good.

To the original question I just purchased a 2 inch Model 64-4, with box, some papers, original grips and most important very nice Combat Grips (dated sometime in the 80's but the last number on the stamp dropped off) for $420.00. The seller had 850 rounds of ammo they wanted to get rid of as well so paid $600.00 for whole deal.

And I forgot some rubber Pachmayr grips and a Buchmeir IWB clip holster.

I considered the price to be very good and when you throw in the grips it is excellent.

Here's my track on the 64 snubbie:

Smith & Wesson 64 2 in Barrel. Revolver in .38 Spl. Blue Book of Gun Values (36th Edition) indicates between $275 in 95% condition and $515 in 100% condition for this gun. I have 39 recorded prices for this model gun from $300 to $824 over a period of 7 Yrs 5 Mos ending August 31, 2016. The average price as of that date was $463. No refurbs, no refinishes, regular sights. All represented as 95% or better. No distinction for engineering revision, if any, no special editions, no distinctions for box, papers, tools. Current or last MSRP is $689.

The last 10 prices I have for this model since 10/4/2013 range from $384 to $824 averaging $542

I picked up a 2" NY-1 recently with very low miles, and the box, with the bingo cards, and owners manual at Cabela's for about $400 out the door.

I think my 3S holsters must be new versions because they are definitely 100% adjustable for cant.

Mine are marked for 2.5" barrels but I imagine a 3" would fit. I had one cut down to fit a 2" barrel without the extra leather at the end.

Hi Senior Chief!

I picked up a 64-2 2" snubbie about two months ago for $410 plus shipping.

It has replaced the Model 60 as my EDC. Funny thing is, about 6 months ago you suggested that I look into getting a k frame instead of the M60 Pro Series I was lusting after. I bought the 60 anyway, but I've taken your advice since then and now own a 66-2 2.5" in addition to the 64. I also would like to have a M65 snub.

I think they grow on you! Anyway, thanks for the suggestion!

Ok, question from the peanut gallery...Can you make a 64 into a “65” with just a cylinder swap? Are the cylinders different lengths, is it just the chambering, or is the metallurgy different?

The cylinders on the magnums are longer, so the part of the barrel that sticks into the frame window is shorter.

As far as metallurgy goes, that's not an argument I want to have on the internet.

Would I do it? Heck no.

Seems like in theory you could have an experienced machinist trim back the forcing cone to fit a magnum cylinder and be GTG... in theory. I wouldn't do it to anything smaller than a K frame and although I've daydreamed about doing this a lot, I don't think I would ever do it and I'm sure someone will be along soon to tell us why it wouldn't work.

Would be really cool to do it to a 2" 64 though.

Perhaps a small consideration: My THREE inch K frame JUST BARELY extracts a 38 Special case fully from a chamber, while a TWO inch J frame leaves ~0.458" of a 38 Special case in a chamber at full ejector throw. (I assume a 2" K frame would be the same but don't have one to check.)

A 357 Mag case is 0.15" longer than a 38 Special, and so would leave ~0.608" of the case in the chamber of a 2" gun at full extractor throw. If you're ever in need of a rapid reload, you're probably more likely to get one with the shorter 38 Special cases.

And if you're looking for more power, it might be worth checking out the 158g Buffalo Bore +P 38 Special loads. They list the hollow cavity cast lead bullet at 1040fps out of a 2" model 60. I haven't measured that particular round, but other BB loads I have checked always come in right around the numbers BB advertises. For comparison, the Remington 158g lead hollow cavity +P load that I have measured out of a 2" model 49 came in at 820fps. So the Buffalo Bore is steaming along about 25% faster, which you can have without swapping cylinders or doing any other gunsmithing.

May I humbly point you to a thread I started just the other day on this very subject? While mine was more of a "happy accident," you might find it useful.

Unfortunately, the 4" ones had to be sold during a time of financial need. The 2" Model 64 made the short list of keepers.
I bought one of the 2inch DAO Model 64s about 15 years ago for $299 from an ad in Shotgun News .It was an over run for a security company. One of the students in our carry permit class offered to give each instructor one free FFl order so I was in fat city. BTW the trigger was excellent right out of the box.

Hello
I picked up mine for 500.00, box and documents, Came with the original grips. I put these on it. I had one several years ago, sold it and regretted it every since. Came across this one and had to grab it.

Hello, Bill! I don't think an old thread of mine has ever been resurrected before but there you have it AND I OWE YOU A REPLY!

You are welcome!

This is the gun that started this discussion I believe, my M64 custom:

This Model 10 is still one of my favorites:
