Shipped my TRR8 back to S&W
To have a titanium cylinder installed.
Phoned the Performance Center.
Nice lady said "no problem".
I use it for steel challenge, not the tactical entry mission for which it was originally intended.
After experiencing titanium with my 986, figure there will be an even greater improvement on the big N cylinder.
Just like a light flywheel lets a race engine rev up faster.

As always, they will mail me an estimate.
In my experience, factory work has always been reasonably priced.

Be sure to report when you get it back. I've been told this spec is pretty brutal with full-house .357 loads when it has the Ti cylinder. I'm guessing steel you shoot something light, but I'd be interested in another opinion on a 5-inch 327 with Scan/Ti.

Correct assessment as to possible recoil.
For steel, all I shoot is a "38 Mid" round. Case cut to .850" with a Bayou 160 loaded to about 740 FPS.

Before you send it in or after? Will they create a shipping label to send it to them or are you on your own in shipping it that direction?

After it is assessed the estimate is prepared. Just the way they do things for custom work. As for shipping they cover that and insurance. FEDEX 2nd day air.

Thanks, but still not clear, do you (did you) send it in to be assessed for the estimate or do they work up a price before you send it in?

Not too bad. Mine mostly sits in the safe so it's not really worth it to me. But for you using it for steel challenge, I'm sure it's money well spent.

I'm intrigued by how specialized this revolver will become -- which is pretty cool. The result must meet reliability and functionality standards or they wouldn't do it. Wait time?
I wonder if the factory would turn a 4" barrelled K frame revolver into a 3" for me? Ha! I wish they made some of them like that!

A little more than I figured, but not enough so not to do it! Bit more than $100 labor? Seems a worthwhile experiment to minimize times.
Would be really cool if they would chamber it in .38 Short Colt!

Since the TRR8 has a two piece barrel, fitting a new cylinder is probably fairly easy. The barrel liner is held with a lock nut (bushing), so the cylinder gap is very easy to adjust.

The cylinder was $127. Add $90 labor, test firing and shipping.

Actually these are three-piece barrelled assemblies: shroud, barrel & nut. The two-piece barrels have the tightener (nut) incorporated into the barrel's muzzle, as one-piece, & then the shroud.

Hmmm, that barrel nut looks very similar to my Dan Wesson barrel nut, the smith just has 2 extra grooves.....maybe they will offer more barrels and sleeves next???? That could be interesting!

The barrels were being manufactured for S&W, by Walther, when the TRR8 was first introduced. Not sure if that's still the case, or if S&W bought the rights to produce it themselves.
