I am not familiar with Model 14 "Roper" guns. What is a Roper gun?
Per the SCSW regarding the model 14:
14-6 introduced 1994
1995-96 square butt eliminated
1996 Begin shipment in blue foam filled plastic cases.
1997 change to MIM thumbpiece and trigger
14-7 introduced 1997

Okay - I answered my own question. Check out the link below. I think you'll find many posts helpful and you will especially like post #8.

The box is correct. That is one of the earlier Ropers, it was built on the earlier M14-5 frame (note the rear sight assembly), but marked M14-6.

I'm guessing the price will go much higher.....

The Roper gun in question was shipped in 1996 or later, so the box is probably legit, although they don''t show the label along with all the other pictures. The case is at least "era correct".

I've seen a number of these Roper M14's over the years. Often with factory letters, so I know ship dates. But never one in an original box that I could verify. (Factory letters don't normally mention the type of box, if it's plain. They will sometimes mention presentation cases and the more fancy deluxe style carrying cases.).

Nice.

Does it have a Round Butt frame under the grips?

A "CAA" s/n would of normally shipped in late 1994. Do you know the ship date of this gun?

Two things....
1- All my Roper guns had "RB" on the box, though they were SB guns.... Hard to get RB out of those Uncle Mikes grips anyway, although much later revolvers had those grips but curiously the boxes marked as SB with guns actually having RB gripframes underneath....
2- Doubtful that would be a RB frame as it's the -5 style frame.... The RB gripframes didn't show up until later in the -6 frame models.

UM made a round-to-square conversion grip. Looks just like the square butt grip. I asked just to be clear, based on the label.

The thing about "RB" and "SB" on the label is often it doesn't describe the gun's frame. Look on the label. Those feature codes are listed under "Stocks". It describes they style of grips S&W puts on the gun.

That is why you see "SB" on all those labels with Smith's that have round butts. The guns shipped with round-to-square conversion grips. The grips had a square butt profile. From the '90's forward, Hogue and UM made a million that way.

I'm well aware that the labeling indicates the stocks, but my point is that those grips/stocks are not RB with these Roper guns, there is no way to make a SB a RB via the grips, only the reverse is true.

As well, there is no separate Uncle Mike grip for RB to SB conversions, all these are the same, put them on a RB frame and it makes it "feel" as a SB, and if you put them on a SB frame, well, it still makes them look and feel like a SB.

I have to disagree. The Uncle Mike model 59012 is a round-to-square conversion grip for K/L-frames. It won't work with a square butt frame. Round butt only. I'm looking at one right here and I'm sure of it. The exterior profile looks exactly like their normal square butt grip.

You wonder why they even made such a grip, if, as you say, a the normal square butt grip would work on a round butt frame. Maybe they thought they would sell more grips, since the 59012 won't work with a SB.

UM and Hogue both made boat loads of round-to-square conversion grips that would work with round butt frames only. The Hogue is easy to spot because it has an exposed back strap. You can see the back strap disappear under the rubber.

The UM is more difficult because the grip fully covers the back strap. You literally have to remove the grips to tell if it's a conversion grip.

Which is my point all along. There is no way to make a SB into a RB, which the Roper box has indicated, neither the frame nor the grips are RB. Obviously if the OP takes the grips off and it turns out to be a RB gripframe (doubtful as it's an early -5 frame) I'll be not only surprised but extremely happy since no RB guns have surfaced to date. Even the elusive 2 3/4" gun (one of two made) is a SB gun.... but that's another story.

As for Uncle Mikes making a specific RB to SB conversion, all mine work on either, I've never found one that works on RB gripframes only.......

I've never found a Houge grip that was RB to SB.... edit: talking about rubber grips that is....
Peace.....

Uncle Mike did make such a grip . . . "I've Got Pictures"

edit to add: per the Kernel's post . . . "The Uncle Mike model 59012 is a round-to-square conversion grip for K/L-frames. It won't work with a square butt frame. Round butt only. Surprising. They're extremely common.

See how the back strap "disappears"?

Well there you go, I guess I've lived a sheltered life, either that or I am blessed with a short memory.

Appreciate the pics.

I'll have to go dig out the junk box of grips that I've filled up over the years and look them over....

Figured it was time to share my joy. The 4” model 14 was random luck but I’m happy it’s in my collection now. I’ll attach more pics and docs on the confirmed roper gun. Have 2 letters. One from Smith & Wesson Historical and one from the man that bought the gun from roper.
