Default 327 TRR8 light primer strikes

I'm having an issue with a TRR8. About 25% of shots are light primer strikes not setting off the primer. Ive heard of this issue before with some guns. My question is do I have to send said revolver back to Smith or can a gunsmith usually fix this problem. Going out of state so I'll probably have to wait until spring

327 reoccurring issue is commonly fixed fully with a slightly longer firing pin. Search these forums for exact length required.

If memory serves me correctly, inexplicably some 327's come with the shorter FP that have the problems you are experiencing.

Before you start changing out firing pins, check the strain screw. If it is tight and you want to try the firing pin, both Apex and Cylinder & Slide have the extended firing pins (the OAL of the pin is the same, but the shoulder is set back more on the non-OEM pins allowing it to protrude farther). If you are a hand loader switch to Federal primers.

Adios,

Pizza Bob

Had the same issue with mine.
100% now. I believe that there may be several issues causing the problem.

1)First sent it into S&W. Returned with the same intermittent problem.
2)Installed the longer firing pin. Some improvement.
3)Tried all different combinations of .020", .022", and .025" moons along with W-W, R-P, and FC brass.
4)FC and R-P brass with the .025" clips run 100%
5)Threw away all the W-W brass and .020 and .022 clips.
6)Starline brass works good with the .025s, too. But, as I trim most to 38 Mid (.850") for speed games, I save it for full length loads.

The firing pin subject was kicked around in this recent thread, Replace firing pin on MIM Smiths? , of which I posted several times.

The Apex F/P's are .500" OAL & the C&S run .510" OAL. They both have noses that are .210" long. I prefer the rounded nose F/Ps vs. the pointed.

The notch in the body of the F/P (see post #18's picture) is what ultimately limits the F/P's maximum forward range. I modified a short F/P to give it a longer/wider notch & it did not help because the F/P is stopped by the primer before it's limit is reached. The longer OAL" is the meaningful factor.

The longer F/Ps fixed my 325TR & 327TRR8 light strike/FTF issues. (I've never used any moonclips in my 327TRR8.)
