Smith and Wesson model 547 Lets see them
I was finally able to complete the 547 with a 3in and 4in. Both in excellent shape box and tools.
The 3 in was shipped to Ashland which is pretty neat in my book.
Anyone else jump in and share yours.

The M-547 sat unwanted on dealer shelves for a while. They were discounted by many to move them. Like a lot of unusual S&W's, they didn't become sought after until they were all gone and were only available on the secondhand market. Then, prices began to rise.
I bought my 3 incher new in April, 1983. I paid $284.45 for it. I've shot it some. The ejector system works great. HKS made speed loaders for them.

Had this for about 14 years. Originally bought it just because it was a 3" k frame. I actually found and joined this forum to find info on this gun. I believe it has never been fired. I have actually thought of trading it for one that has been shot so I could have an opportunity to shoot one. It's the only true safe queen I'll ever have. It came with the older style two piece box, paperwork and tools. Sorry, no handy pic of the extras

Shoot it and enjoy it! Don't let someone else have the pleasure when the dirt is being shoveled on your grave. I bought a super nice 6.5" 27-2 Friday afternoon and have been shooting it the past 3 evenings. Life is too short not to enjoy it.

The S&W Model 547 is a neat revolver but perhaps an idea that came way before its time.
If the idea is to "Complete" the Model 547 variations then I am the bearer of bad news as there are several other variants that are required to complete its evolution.
The earliest RB 3" and SB 4" variants had pinned barrels and D serials where later versions have alpha prefix serials and non pinned barrels,
My guess is that at some point S&W purged their stock of 547 parts making a mish mosh of variations like this 4" round butt with FG combat stocks and a standard .357 magnum cylinder.
As well as a 3" 9mm /357 combo variation

This one was purchased back in the 80's when the dealers were blowing them out. The original owner paid around $185 for it. After six months and a box of ammo he decided he didn't care for the 9mm round, so I gave him his $185 for it. I think I've put two additional boxes through it, maybe three.

Very nice if you don't mind me asking how did you get the 357 cylinder?

Has anyone, besides me, ever wondered why the 547 was not head-spaced like any other S&W revolver in a rimless cartridge caliber? Instead they invented a clever, mechanism that was expensive to produce and not nearly as durable as a gun that uses moon clips. Sure, the extractor ejects the empties, but so what? Any revolver using moon clips is MUCH faster to load and unload than one that doesn't, even with a speedloader. This is good example of simpler being better. The 547 is a unique piece, but with about 10,000 built, they are not rare. The only problem with shooting them, is the fragility of the extractor. If it breaks, you're screwed.

The 547 is unique and has become a collectors item, IIRC the 547 was produced for some Middle eastern govt (But was cancelled prior to delivery) that had agreed to arm a slightly hostile border security force and did not want to give them semi auto 9 mms. If the story is true it kinda makes sense to order a gun in a caliber that you have a ton of ammo for already, the extractor negates the need for stocking moon clips and tools as well as slows down reloads if in fact that was their intention.
The firing pin / holding pin arrangement is unique and was S&W's only centerfire handgun with an internal firing pin at the time, Even if the ejector is ruined and parts are hard to find I wouldnt scrap the 547 as a cylinder can be fitted from a K Magnum, Another neat project would be to flip the firing pin and holding pin , replace the cylinder with one from a K22 and either swap the barrel or make a .22lr bore insert resulting in a 3" .22 lr M&P snub.

The extractors are anything but fragile.

Actually as noted in the jinks letter near the top the revolver was developed at the request of the French police. Interestingly at a time we started to see American police start to use the semi auto a lot of European countries were getting into revolvers for police.
While I agree moon clips are handy it is also nice not to be restricted to them. My model 22 thunder ranch revolver used moon clips but I found I could load and shoot without them and opening and shaking the cylinder cleared the empties.
That may not be the case with the higher pressure 9mm.
In the wish list I would like to have smith do a 6 shot k frame 9mm again - considering the popularity of the 929&986 perhaps they will, but as usual they will probably only bring it out in the stainless steel I detest. My wish would be a 919 blued k for 9mm!
A man can dream!
An interesting side note- the gun companies have convinced people to pay more for stainless but it actually costs the company less to build in stainless because there is less prep and finishing work in stainless than blued

I guess you did not factor in the cost of TOOL replacement, stainless VS carbon steel. You will get much better "mileage" working carbon VS SS or some of the other alloys out there! Good quality tools- cutters, mills do not come cheap!

Very interesting I was curious about how it would function with the firing pin and other one to hold the shell in place. Might have to see if I can find a cylinder. What would it be a model 13 cylinder?

While I have never handled one the 547 M was supposedly a result of purging old inventory of leftover 547 frames fitted with a .357 Mag cylinder, IIRC one member had a factory combo gun and the posted pic was his combo gun.
The 547 M fitted with a .357 cylinder would have been in the 19-5 revision , Without opening the SCSW Im guessing thats probably the 13-2 revision,
Either way shouldnt matter as long as the cylinder was from 1978 or up because of the gas ring.
Had to pull the Model 547 out of the safe to confirm but here are my observations ,
The 547 cylinder is the same length as the older recessed 19/13 cylinders and this allows its non rimmed 9mm cartridge primer to be positioned at the same place which is critical to avoid light primer strikes or piercing the primer.
Since this is the case the holding pin would fall just as far to both a recessed 19-4 cylinder or a non recessed 19-5 cylinder because the case head of the recessed 9mm round is positioned at the same height.
This being the case the holding pin will fall the same depth to a rimmed case head and not be an issue IMO.

Hello to the community and greetings from Austria!
My name is Ronald (or short: Ron) and some days ago I got my hands on a model 547 (4 inch, square butt, pinned barrel).
It is stamped with an Austrian proof mark from September 1982.
According to the serial no. (9D3...) it was manufactured in 1981.
Today I took it to the shooting range for the first time - it worked flawlessy. What a joy to shoot!
And sorry collectors... this gun will be shot!
Here it is:
Best wishes, Ron

So, after a year of seeking finally found - and today they arrived:
Two HKS 547 speedloaders (last pieces on stock) from a tiny gunshop in Italy - sold at MSRP!
👍🥳
Regards, Ron
