It'll be the first factory-new S&W I've purchased in 30 years.

I am on several notification lists. Was told by one dealer that average time from pictures on site to production was 8 months.

Hmmmm....not totally my experience. I have seen only one 3" 66, and that was years ago, when my kids were in High School, and I couldn't afford it. The Smiths I see now have been rode hard and put away wet, and co$t a mint! Might as well buy a new one.
I tried to order a 3" Ruger Security Six some years ago, but they must have had like 3, and they were gone before I got my order in.
The pixes of the new 66 look really good, and 3"-2.75"... not a lot of difference, I guess, seeing as my EDC ammo is the Speer 135 gr. Short Barrel, or Rem Golden Saber and they expand from very short barrels. I just may sell my 586 no dash to finance the purchase....no I won't!

IMNHO...wait a few months so they will get the new model gremlins worked out.

Lucky Gunner's website shows a high resolution photo of the M66-8 snub from the 2017 Shot Show.

http://www.luckygunner.com/lounge/sh...rs-everywhere/

Now, I would like to see what it looks like with a wood boot grip.
Like my Ahrends finger grove boot grip!
The only thing I would change is the front sight. Don't care for the red ramp types, or any other color. Fortunately, the sight is pinned.

Best,
Rick

Any idea when the new 66 will be available? I've been watching this forum since November 2016, and can't stop soaking up the info. Joined forum tonight to ask. Bought a 65-3 4 inch barrel in November and it needs a shorter friend.

Put money down on the 69 2.75" two days ago. Quoted a price of $769.00. Have and love the 4.2" 69. Can't wait to get the snubbie.

I have bought two with locks, that doesn't bother me. I wonder how difficult it would be to remove the adjustable sight, isn't just the rear sight adjustable?

Yes, the rear sight is adjustable. Removing it is a piece of cake, just a screw in the top strap holds the rear sight assembly in place. But I don't know offhand if there is a fixed sight option you would replace it with. Without the sight, you'll have a longish, ungainly looking space to fill, with an empty screw hole. It does not leave a natural rear alignment groove (like a fixed sight 640, for example).

Back to the topic at hand is, WHERE are these darned NM 66 snubbies landing? I still have yet to see one!

Thanks a lot for the information. If it comes off that easily, perhaps some company makes a fixed rear sight that attaches just as easily. One never knows, I'll start looking around. It will be a while before the new model 66 is out anyway.

No one carries a revolver in single action. Nor does anyone carry with the lock engaged.

If anyone is going to argue that the lock would prevent a ND, then they might as well admit they were going to use their revolver as a melee weapon.

Ricky T just checked into this thread, no news on when the 69 will hit the stores. But I'll have my layaway paid off by the time it gets here.

Did I say anyone carries cocked or locked? No. That's just the rationale for deleting the lock on hammerless models. It's way easier to to have an AD with a cocked revolver than one that's DAO.

The premise for the lock is for storage to prevent a kid (or idiot) from cocking & firing the gun he found it dads sock drawer.

Has the lock prevented any ADs? I can't know, but seriously doubt it.

PDs were issuing DA only revolvers for decades before the lock for the same reason. Under duress,it's much easier to have an AD with trigger that breaks very easily.

Whether it was a legitimate concern for the PDs, or just PR, I can't say..

From first word on this forum on 11/22/16 that a 2.75" 66 was pictured on the S&W website until one landing in my LHS on 5/16/17 was just about 6 months. Not bad. It was enough time for me to get used to the idea of the black accents. Bought it. Shoot it. Love it.

Any issues with blowback? There have been some reports of a couple of these guns spitting fragments probably due to forcing cone issues. Just wondering if these were isolated cases.

I had read the thread about the blow-back issue, so I inspected the cylinder line-up of each chamber and they seemed perfect. I shot 62 rounds (12 were lead) of .38 Special (which I know is not a real test for blow-back given the lower pressures) and I saw no hint of any shaving when I examined the forcing cone.

It's a very well designed gun and aesthetically I believe it's going to be a classic. 2.75" is perfect for full ejection (the new detent lock-up made that possible).

I just noticed this thread. I've been looking for a clean Ruger Speed Six (2.75" barrel) but the few for sale are at prices higher than this new M66, so it's a no-brainer.

I have 300 rounds of my Steel Challenge reloads through mine with no lead shaving. I am using 125gn lead Bullets with 4 grains of Red Dot. I can pass a .358 sized lead bullet through the cylinders' chambers with a little resistance.

That's just what I thought last November when we first heard S&W was going to put out a 2.75" 66. I have wanted a 2.75" Speed Six forever. This 66-8 solves that problem nicely. I am very happy with this build.

I have one of the new 66s with 2.75 barrrel. I own 15 other S&W revolvers of various models and age and the new 66's fit, finish and accuracy is as good or better than all of them. The lockup out of the box was very tight.

First time at the range I had a copper jacket shaving issue with 158 grain AE .357 semi jacketed ammunition. The buildup after three cylinders worth caused the revolver to lock up. I had shot 100 rounds of Remington 135 grain FMJ .38 spl prior to the .357s without issue.

The fouling was exactly like that which was reported by another owner in a previous post -- copper buildup at the top of the forcing cone. It was easy to remove after returning home from the range.

The following week I fired a mix of several types and weights of .38 and .357, including the 158 grain AE. 150 rounds total. The shaving did not occur again.

I have been to the range twice more and have had no further issues. It's almost as if the gun just needed to be loosened up a bit.
