Default Model 66 with 2.75 inch barrel is being introduced

Looks like they are introducing a 2.75 inch version of the Model 69 as well.

SKU numbers are 10061 for the 2.75 inch Model 66, and 10064 for the 2.75 inch Model 69.

Both will have red ramp and white outline sights.

That sounds great. Any idea when these would be released?

No idea, but my guess is that if they follow their usual pre-SHOT Show pattern, they will send out some before Christmas. I wish to stress that is just a guess based on what they do every year with new introductions that are more variations on something already in the line, as opposed to a completely new product.

I'm kind of excited, a short-barreled model 69 would be nice.

Default Model 69

I would love to have the Model 69 with a 2.75 inch barrel. I just bought a Model 696 which is only chambered for the 44 spl, but a Model 69 with a snub nose barrel would be perfect, and chambered in 44 magnum/44 spl.

I already bought a Model 69 with a 4 inch barrel. A little brother would be nice.

If they have a full-length ejector rod they will likely sell very well. Looking forward to photos.

MSRP is $849. Wonder what the street price will end up being.

Don't the newest M66's use ball-detent lock up? So, in theory, the ejector rod on the 2.75-in could be a little bit longer? I wish I could comment on this with some kind of authority (I.E., own one) but even the new M66's are still way out of my price range ...

Yes they do use a ball-detent lock up on the M66, and on the M69. I have one of the new M66 revolvers, and I just took it shooting yesterday as a matter of fact. I also bought, but don't yet have an M69. I live in California and have to wait 10 days before I can pick it up and take it home. So I won't have it in my possession until Nov 28.

Looking forward to seeing pictures of the 66 2.75, hopefully the action is as smooth as my model 66-2.

I’m Pleased that Smith and Wesson is listening to its customer base and bringing back the short-barreled M-66. I’m lucky enough to have three 2 1/2” model 19/66’s, a 3” model 66 along with a 3” model 65, Lady Smith. As nice as the 3” models are they always felt much heavier in my hand and in any holster, I’ve carried one in.
As for the full-length ejector rod difference, I never had an empty hang up with either barrel length. I turn the barrel up 90 degrees give the ejector rod a HARD wack which dumps all my empties, then reload with six then I'm ready to go again.

Remember I a gun does not feel good in the hand you're not going to carry it or shoot it much. No matter how nice a gun is if you don't shoot it or tote it, it does you no good.

Have a great Thanksgiving all.

Then the question is:

a. Is S&W introducing it as a part of their Classic line?

b. Is this a special order by Lipsey's of a given number which will end once the last of the order is sold by Lipsey?

A S&W rep told us to our face that we would never see another S&W revolver with an exposed hammer without a lock. He said it would be a legal nightmare to remove a "safety device" once it was introduced into production. This was 2 years ago at the dealers meet in Columbia, S.C. at the fairgrounds.

And yet, they were able to introduce the M&P Shield with a thumb safety, only to release a safety-less version a couple years later?

Why would the exposed hammer make any difference?

Edit: If there's really some reason they can't make one with an exposed hammer, how about producing a K-Frame centennial? I'd buy a new 66 (or even something like a Nightguard 315 or 386) with a concealed hammer if it meant no internal lock.

Further thoughts: Given the ball detent lock-up, I would guess that the ejector is full length.

The lock is going to be on anything with an exposed hammer until further notice, although I wish they would sell them both ways, and let the market decide. They do that with the M&P pistol, which can be had both with and without the key lock, so I am not clear on why it cannot be done with revolvers.

Finally, this is NOT a Lipseys exclusive. It is available to all distributors.

A model 69 with a 2 3/4" barrel? YES!
I was hoping for a 3" but 2 3/4" is close enough. Now I can stop looking at 696's I can't afford.
Guessing the official roll out will be the shot show. Thank you S&W. I will buy one! Maybe a matching 66 to go with it...

Thank you Smith & Wesson for listening ! I have a 4.25 " 66-8 that I enjoy shooting the 2 3/4" would be a nice carry revolver. Something more to add to the list. I'm also glad they included the 69 also. Revolvers aren't dead yet.

One of those will be the first new S&W revolver I've bought since my Model 337 ti. Now to track one down when they come out. I think one of these could easily be an EDC piece, especially on a walk in the woods, etc.

I will probably have to have one. I wish they would also make an airweight version but I'll take an all steel one.

The S&W rep's prophecy did not happen to Ruger.

Ruger dropped the internal lock from the LCR and SA revolvers and nobody even noticed.

I was thinking the same thing as I read the first part of this thread. The old Security Six series were very rugged revolvers and fit my hand as well as a k-frame Smith. Around these parts (central Kalifornia) they fetch new-gun prices.

The one holster made for the 2.75" Ruger was the Bianchi 5b/5bh series in a size listed as S6. Very hard to find. Now we will have another series of revolvers soaking up the small supply of S6's.

Perhaps.
But maybe we will also see new holsters made that will fit both guns?

My favorite holster for my Model 66 snub is my Milt Sparks Versa Max 2, so comfortable I can wear it all day and barely notice my revolver. I imagine they could make one for a Ruger too.

I've been hoping S&W would come out with a shorter barreled version of the 66 and the 69. I have an old 66-3 with a 3" barrel, but I don't want to carry it for fear of it getting used and losing it to the evidence bin. A 2 3/4" barrel will work for me in both the .357 mag. and the .44 mag.

1) Look's like a regular factory gun (since a 2.75" inch barrel 66 was never a standard length, it makes sense that it would not be in the Classic Series).

2) My LGS owner told me all his distributors have a item number for it, so it will not be just a Lipsey's exclusive.

I preordered one today!

Yeah it just sounds like an excuse to me as well. Lock and 2 piece barrel are a deal breaker for me

I love the barrel length, between an older 2.5" K frame and a 3" K frame. Well done Smith...

I would love a 2.5" or 3" version myself, I don't care for middle of the road stuff.

With 3" you could have a decent boot grip and still be symmetrical or 2.5" and have one hell of a carry piece with a very small grip that meets up flush with the bottom of the grip frame.

My guess is that they wanted to make a revolver with the shortest barrel and the full length ejector rod they could for the purpose carrying.

Default Sec Six holster

The one holster made for the 2.75" Ruger was the Bianchi 5b/5bh series in a size listed as S6. Very hard to find. Now we will have another series of revolvers soaking up the small supply of S6's.
I have a Safariland holster marked 18 that fits my 2.75" speed six.

I have been looking at a short barreled 460mag for protection against scrub bulls whilst mustering cattle but i think i will now wait for a 2.75in Model 69 to hit Australian shores!

I didn't read all of the above posts, so if redundant, I'm sorry.

Questions about full ejection of .44 mag cases keep coming up.

I just measured my 4 1/4" M69

From face of cyl to tip of ejector rod: 2.0"
From face of cyl to end of ejector lug: 2.5"

With a 2.75" barrel, that would leave approx .25" of barrel beyond the end of the ejector lug.

So, depending on how S&W executes the 2.75" barrel, you should get full ejection of the fired brass.

Measurements for the 66-8 (357 Mag), also to be offered with the 2.75" barrel, are the same as the M69.

FWIW,

Paul

I would buy a 2.75" 66 for sure! I wonder if the fixed sight models 64 and 65 would follow if the 66 and 69 are popular and achieve the sales goals that Smith might have for them?

I had to look up "scrub bulls." Who knew? 44 Magnum is about right!

This 2.75" mod.66 is the best news I've heard in years. The snub nose K frame is back after what has been an almost 15 year hiatus. Can't believe it took S&W this long to realize what sells.
