Default Three Amigos model 64 4"

Picked up three model 64 4" from Southern Police Equipment on gunbroker, they are two dash 3 and one dash 5, ranging from 1981 to 1989 best as I can determine form S&W 3rd. After shipping, FFL transfer, I have $363.99 in each one. Here in Northern Illinois I haunt the local gun shops and gun shows, and decent S&W revolvers under $500 just don't exist, or I can't find them. Thought I would get three and hang on to one or two, but they are all three starting to grow on me, so they may cling. I have one 64 DAO with bobbed hammer, and an older model 10 no dash with the pencil barrel, but the 4" heavy barrel stainless K frame is an awesome thing. Not too big, not too small, just right! They look just like my 4" 65-3. Have to get them all to the range this week, they seem tight mechanically. They are LE trade in, I think Virginia dept. of corrections. Why do I need three of them when I only have two hands? Can't really say...

Did you ever think about buying just one and what you might be able to buy with the other $727.98? Certainly an unusual criterion for buying revolvers.

Nice trio for sure. I must be getting old as I remember when the mass change to semi autos in police service resulted in a glut of k frames and model 10's were $150 easily all day long. My brother is a retired officer and got some great deals on revolvers when the transition was going on. Many of the officers in the revolver days had to buy personal duty guns who the. Wanted to sell them When agencies started issuing autos.
One of the last departments to transition in the area sold off model 15's for less than $100, and I ended up getting a model 19 for $200. That particular gun at that price included the duty holster speed loader case and loaders plus two. Boxes of factory ammo! Sure do miss those days!
My last model 10 purchase about 10 years ago was at a local shop for $165, and the shop owner said he would sell me as many as I would want at that price

Default Other things with $727.98

Yes, sodacan, I did think about it, pretty hard. And went with the purchase. Maybe I am becoming a hoarder . I would venture that there are many unusual criteria for buying revolvers, but luckily I don't have to justify it to anyone. Unless my wife finds out...

I ALWAYS think about buying just one... for at least 10 seconds. Can't tell how many Smiths I've purchased just to prevent someone else from buying them. My recent PC 637 is one example. This wheelgun guy would also have a problem passing up 64s like these. Imagine what would happen if they were J-frames. You know me!

To the OP: Several years ago, I bought 2 HB 64s that a casino had turned in for Glocks. Essentially brand new, the insides were filled with hardened lube. Evidently, this passed for maintenance by the security department. Perhaps you want to check for this on your 3 gems? Just a thought.

Nice trio, I don't blame you for keeping them! They will never be made like that again! I have an ex M64-3, 3" that is one of my favorite pistols!

My issue with Southern is how they'll toss all three in one box, but charge full individual shipping prices to increase their profit margin.

Kent Bellah of Saint Jo, TX was a well-known gun writer from the '50s until his death in the mid-'60s. He wrote mostly about handguns and handloading.

Bellah did a lot of shooting, usually with his own cast or swaged bullets and probably wore out several handguns. When he found a gun he really liked, the highest compliment he could give was to "get a pair and a spare".

Your full "O T D" price from G/B, ($363.99) is actually slightly less than buying direct from a Virginia police supply, where they are priced at the $363.99, but have 5% tax.

Nothing wrong with multiples of the same model. Heck ! if I only had one 64, I would consider myself "without".

Default Shipping costs at Southern Police Equipment.

diyj98: They charged me $40 to ship all three, which was the shipping price for one on the Gunbroker ad. I called them about payment and asked how much for shipping all three, and he said I can send them all for the price of one, $40. Maybe I got lucky, but that's how they worked it for me.

Default Pair and a spare!

I like that Rockquarry, never heard that one before. Has a nice ring to it, but could get expensive in a hurry!

There should be some more 64's coming down the pike. My company switched to M&P 40's a few years ago. To were not require to switch then. Now you are. Each branch was not reimbursed for sending the revolvers in so we kept them. All revolvers (and shotguns) must be in our home office by Dec 31.

Guessing maybe as many as 1000 model 64's. mostly 4" HBs. When I sent my branches 50 + revolvers in, I kept the best ones for us. Company has its own FFL so all guns go back to S&W.

Good to hear. I must have dealt with the wrong person when I'd spoken to them. I was told "shipping is $40 per gun no matter how many you buy".

Those three look to be in good condition. I'll bet they check out just fine. Kinda like buying an anvil ... they are really hard to screw up! And it really is hardly ever about "need". And it's hard to have too many Model 10's or 64's. They just flat work, and they all work pretty much the same. Let's see ... one near the front door, one near the back door, one in the garage or in the bathroom! That's just the beginning of the list of possibilities. And they are always good trading material as well. Don't take up much space and don't eat nuthin' unless you put 'em to work! All fit the same holster ... I could go on. I think you did VERY well, Sir. Congratulations!!!

IIRC, the -5 came along in 1991. I have a 3" model, and that was when 3" became a standard length.

Kinda makes me wonder who my 3" -3 was made for.

One or both will go on the market when I get my hands on the new 2.75" M-66. I love em but with a 3" barrel, that damn ramp FS completely fills the rear notch.
