Default Value of S&W 547

Looking to add to my herd. Research indicates 4" commands higher premium.

Your comments are appreciated!

Condition and originality of package dictate price in a collectible revolver.

Im not so sure I would put a premium on a 4" SB over the 3" RB as its the opposite in every other Model they make, Might add a slight premium for a pinned barrel over a non pinned.

At the end S&W was putting together 357/9mm combos and just 357's called 547 M to use up old stock of parts which probably do get a premium especially a combo gun.

IIRC the 547 is the first S&W center fire revolver that had an internal firing pin .

Default 547 pricing

from what i have seen at gun shows and online, the 3 inch barrel 547 commands a higher price than the 4 inch barrel 547, despite the higher production numbers on the 3 inch.

i most recently saw a 3 inch offered for just over $2K and the 4 inch version around $1400. condition and accessories being equal.

i have seen a 3 inch 547 go for over $2.5K this year online.

Default Great Sellers.

The 4 inch is much more scarce than the 3 inch, with only about 35% of the 4 inch guns making up the total production. The 3 inch is much more desirable than the 4 inch within the majority of buyers. The early "scarce" pinned barrel 4 inch guns bring the very most within the 547 models or that what I have seen. The 3 inch sells faster than the 4 inch, but not necessarily for more money.

Well, if you don't count the Model 53 .22 Jet.

I know this is an old thread, but I figure it is worth updating as a NIB inch just sold on gb for $2,700. Another 4 inch advertised as new sold for $1,800 on gb, but it appeared to have been altered after leaving the factory. I assume a 3 inch NIB would be a little higher in value as they are much harder to find for sale. I have also seen very few 3 inches for sale NIB(maybe because the 3 inch is a great carry gun and people are actually using them). There are approximately 1/2 as many 4 inch models (3,784) but there are more in 98% plus condition.

In summary, prices appear to be going up on the 547's as collectors are realizing how scarce a nib 547 is.

I saw a nice four inch, in the box, at the last Raleigh NC gun show. The dealer had $1895 on it. I assume it will be at the next show.

I got interested in 547s back in’10. I bought a 4” from a fine gentleman off GB, with original box, almost NIB. I paid about a grand for it, put it in my dad’s safe since I was still living in Germany. In 2012, I found another 4” in a German gun shop and bought it as i wanted a safe queen and a shooter with the idea someone would trade for a less rare 3”. But for some crazy reason, everyone with a 3” wants to ask more, even when the condition is less. No way am I going to pay more for a3” tubed model, that’s just nonsense. And although it usually lowers the value, I like my Germany purchased 547 as it’s been proofed in Ulm and stamped as such, which is a little unusual. The stamp is not well done, so my belief is that it was bought by a US service member and later sold when the guy couldn’t ship it back to the US, a sad, but rather common occurrence back in the 80s, but even worse sine ‘99. Now I’m at the point where if someone offered me an even trade for an equal condition 3”, I would take it otherwise, I don’t deal with price gougers. I think the 4” barreled version is a better revolver anyway, for balance, accuracy and power. Both mine are early pinned barreled and are arguably the favorite of my collection of S&Ws. The one nice thing about my Ulm proofed 547 is that I can take it back to Germany if I ever go back since it’s been registered and proofed in Germany.

I have one. I paid under $1000 on gunbroker for a 98% RB w/o box, papers, etc.

I still think your price would sell on gunbroker with a national audience..

I believe those speedloaders alone fetch $100 each!

Do you shoot it? The recoil is punishing!

I paid $1000 for my 3 inch last year. It's probably been fired, I have not fired it. It came with the original box and papers.

Interestingly it had magna grips on it. The gun was a very late one and the magna grips fit perfectly. I don't know if it came that way or somebody just "robbed" it of the round butt targets. Fortunately, I had a set lying around that I put on it.

When I saw it I could not beleive that it had not been bought. The dealer had $1100 on it and took $100 off for cash.

It was an incredible deal and I knew it.

If you are old enough -AND- you had HBO back in the day, there was a somewhat sketch-comedy show named "Not Necessarily the News" and one frequent bit was this guy who coined the term "Sniglets", which were a collection of things that desperately needed a one-word-name but did not.

In my opinion, we need a Sniglet for "Smith & Wessons that were absolute commercial dogs, face down in the dirt failures that nobody wanted at any price, were later dumped en masse for pocket lint prices but now command prices that are arguably far beyond ridiculous."

When the Sniglet is thusly coined, a S&W 547 shall be pictured next to it.

a gun shop near me had two 4" and one 3" the last time I was there. Unfortunately they are shooter grade. Lock up is good. Asking price is 875 each.

I’m looking to trade my 547 for a 2” 63. Based on what I’m reading that may not be a smart decision?

Interesting I find my 547 3'' to have a much better recoil than my semis. What I do find punishing was the DA trigger pull. I do my revolver shooting DA for the most part, why learn two different trigger pulls) I started out shooting revolvers in early 1970s and did a lot of PPC shooting

I understand the reasons for the heavy trigger pull and I did a little stoning but most definitely no spring work. It helped out a bit.

I got the gun at a good price a couple years ago. No box/docs or tools. It has been shot but is in very good condition, 90 or better!

There was a 3 inch 547 at the York, PA gun show today priced at $1495 with 2 speedloaders. It was a good show for revolvers. Picked up a sweet 686-3 with a 2 1/2 inch barrel for $540.

From what they are saying above, you could buy several Model 63s for what your 547 would sell for. BTW, yours looks very nice!

I think it is a neat revolver and the market says maybe you should buy it for a thousand, no box. Still, the idea of dropping a grand on that makes my head hurt. But the market is the market.

Just joined the site after reading this thread. I have a duty carried SB 547 that I am thinking of selling or trading. It has some holster wear on the end of the barrel; but otherwise in good shape. Would Gun Broker be a good venue to list it?

Every time one of these threads comes up, I try unsuccessfully to stop myself from posting the serial number of the 4" one I had stolen in 1995 (along with several other handguns).

ABL 5311

I could shoot that revolver better in double-action than any gun I've owned before or since. Don't know why.

I picked up a 4 inch round butt a couple of years ago for $700.

I called Roy Jinks about it and he stated that at the end of production they were trying to move them out the door as fast as possible and use whatever parts they had laying around so that it very well may have left the factory in that configuration.

If you do decide to buy a 547 keep an eye open for speed loaders as they command a premium.

I could shoot that revolver better in double-action than any gun I've owned before or since. Don't know why.
I have a 3'' and its a good gun but to me it has too much of a trigger pull.

I know that due to its purpose it needs a stiff firing pin hit and not to reduce the trigger pull (spring or strain screw) FWIW I have been doing trigger jobs on Smith's since mid 1970s and have done a lot. So I left the springs alone and did some careful stoning and polishing and got the pulls down some what, and it still fires off everything with no hiccups.

I just measured the pulls and in DA I get 11.75 and in SA I get 3.50. Most of my revolver shooting is DA. My gauge has a max of 12. I did not measure the pulls before I did my polish job but its much smother and easier now.
