I like using the Allchin mount at Allchin.com. You can also go to Midway USA and buy a Weaver Mount, Just look under mounts for L frame Smith & Wesson.

I think it was 1993 when S&W started drill/tap three holes on the top strap. You can see them on the underbelly of the top strap. Do not know what type of red dot you fancy. This is the kit I like:

the type of mount you will need will depend on the type of red dot you will use. You may have to install a picatinny rail, or a specific mount for a specific red dot.

I bought the mount made by forum member revolver ph and put it on a 686-4 and attach a Burris

He made a post in this thread if you want to send him a PM about his mount.

Here's my Snub nose 6 shot 686-4 with revoler ph mount and a Burris FF3

Yesterday I drilled and tapped a 625-2 Model of 1988 to mount the Burris FF3

if you go with a burris fastfire or similar there are mounts that are specifically made for them so you can avoid a rail. Revolver_ph makes one like what I'm talking about along with other companies. Revolver_ph has an image of his.

(Sorry revolver_ph for the confusion)

The mount in my post is my design and fabrication, i.e. not an Allchin. I have an ad on this forum:

http://smith-wessonforum.com/accessories-misc-sale-trade/491223-fs-reflex-sight-mounts-smith-wesson-ruger-revolvers.html

I just purchased a mount from revolver_ph last Friday. I received it the following Monday. I mounted a fastfire III to my 686 with this mount. A very easy to attach mount and nice looking IMHO.
I went to the range this afternoon to try it out. The fastfire shot about 3 inches to the left from the factory and it took about six more rounds to have it shooting dead center.
I have never used a red dot before and have heard it was hard to acquire the dot in the scope. I found this not to be the case. It Readily became visible as I raised the weapon up into firing position. I was impressed with the accuracy of the revolver with this red dot attached. At 25 feet single action from a rest I put three shots dead center that cut the paper between each other. I could cover them all with it a postage stamp . The old square type .
I did some double action firing at 25 feet and 30 feet and had very nice groups. The picture below with revolver in it was at 25 feet with fairly rapid double action shots.
