Default Lucky local find

As is too often the case, yesterday I was browsing the local gunshop, way too convenient to my office.

I spied a gorgeous nickle plated, six inch 586.

I just had to have it. Came home with me this afternoon.

Knew some folks around here would enjoy seeing it.

Nice looking revolver. I have a problem with finding guns I can't resist. Never owned a L frame 357, but always hear good things about the 586

SO HARD TO RESIST!!!! I KNOW!!!

What a gorgeous gun and if you shoot it then it's doubly gorgeous because they shoot so well. My standard blue 586 6" is AMAZING!

Well done!

Very nice L frame 586

Looks like it was wearing rubber Hogues for a time before those PC Magnas,
I have used a product called Flitz to shine up my nickel guns, works great.

BTW the Magnas look neat on the full underlug 6" but IMO original stocks would have most likely been checkered target stocks with the speed loader cut out.

Thanks all. Got it home and gave it a good cleaning. Discovered a few tiny rust spots, but nothing too dramatic. Put on some more appropriate, if not entirely correct stocks. It did in fact come into the shop wearing Hogue's. Good eye! I'm pretty pleased with the find. A no dash model that never got the "M" stamp.

The presentation grips look good and add just the right touch for me! Good score.

I'm not even much of a fan of nickel guns, but that's a stunner.

Good looking 586, I imagine you will really enjoy shooting it. Cleaned up nicely. I have a nickel finish no dash 586 with 4" barrel that doesn't have the "M" stamp. I say if it handles your chosen ammunition well then no worries. Those target stocks look good as well.

I've had two of the first year production 586s, both 4inch bbls, and no stamp. Both are crazy accurate and I've had no problems with firing pin issues. I don't shoot the "HOT" 125JHPs that were so popular in the 80s through either one. 140-158 357s forever.

Very nice looking revolver.
I'm a bit of a rookie, and a 586 6" is next on my list. Will someone please explain the "M" stamp you mention? I am unfamiliar. Thank you.

The "M" stamp refers to a modification on the early L frame 357's. If you see a L-frame no dash without the "M", it's not been sent in and done. If it's marked with the "M", it's made it back to the factory or was performed by a S&W armorer. That particular update replaced the hammer nose and bushing due to some instances of primers flowing back into that bushing, locking up the revolver.

I remember watching a department armorer do the "M" mod on a 681 issue gun I had.

The stamp looks like this:

I've had fun with this thread showing off this great looking revolver. Have appreciated the comments.

But I just realized that in my haste to show all of you...

...I posted this thread in the wrong forum.

Mods moved to the proper forum. Thanks! I feel less like a muppet now.

Very nice! There is something about the nickel 586's that make them hard to resist, I have a 586-1 without the M

Yes they are indeed hard to pass up.
Happened to me twice, once with a 586 and once with a M27.

That's a beauty! I have the 4" version of that and it is my favorite revolver to shoot.

Gotta ask -- how much did you pay for it?

It is a beauty, and thanks.

Didn't buy it outright. It came in a trade involving a few things. The exact terms of the agreement have been sworn to secrecy.

I would have absolutely no use for this gun, but I would have bought it anyway, simply to keep someone else from having it. Just bought a PC 637 for that reason. And, of course, because it's a J-frame!

Curious, where were the small rust spots you mentioned? Under the grips, perhaps? Nice holiday present, enjoy!

I don't know that I have any real use for it either. It was purty and really grabbed me. Has already given me a lot of pleasure just showing it off in this thread and discussing it with the members here. So, for that alone, it's been a worthwhile acquisition.

Rust spots under the grips and as shown here.

Grabbed a set of extra nice targets from a forum member a week or so ago. Looks like they belong on this one!
