Question Question about the S&W Model 649 Body Guard .357 magnum revolver.

I have a question regarding the S&W Model 649 Body Guard .357 magnum revolver.

I know that S&W starting chambered it in .357 magnum in 1996. i was just wondering what the exact date was when they started doing it.

The reason that i am asking for this information is because i was recently given one of these guns and now i am wild about them.

1996 is as close as I can come, but you have to be a bit careful because they were on-again, off-again as to chambering .357. The 649-3 started in '96 as .38/.357. in '97 the 649-4 came out in .38+P, but not .357. IIRC the -5 was also .38 only, and then the -6 was .38/357 again. The -5 also started the internal lock and MIM, so if you want an unmolested gun you'd be stuck looking for the one-year produced 649-3.

I am aware of a 649-5 chambered in .357 Mag with SN CUL33XX and sports the IL. As closely as I can determine, the year of manufacture for this revolver was 2013. I would prefer not to have the IL on this gun, but since it is not used for EDC, I can take it or leave it. I do like the steel frame and the 2 1/8" barrel very much. I have had NO problems with the IL. I believe it is correct to say that the dash 5 started the IL production of this Model.

S&W shipped the first -3's in June of 1996. Perhaps a little before. It was in the CBDxxxx s/n prefix range.
