I ran with mine on the last 2 workouts. Carried very well in a belly band with a speed loader tucked in.

Finally had a minute to get to the range with the 640-1. It ran great with everything I fed it in 38, 38+P, and 357. I am very pleased. If anything, it was just worn-in when I got it, ready to get to work. It was point of aim except for a bit to the right, but it was probably me. I have been looking for the perfect CCW, and think I found it. Thanks again everyone!!!!!! Dave

Got mine out for the first time. I'm very pleased. I can shoot it better than my 50 year old Model 36, so into the rotation it goes. This is the first 357 snub I have shot. My 158 grain full Magnum reloads were not too bad out of it. I replaced the OEM grubs with some Hogue Bantam rubber.
Thanks everyone!😀

I took the side plate off, screws came out easily, and it was fairly clean. Oil was just starting to jell up in spots, other areas it was still good.

Weather finally allowed me to take mine to my range. I shot it from 40' 30' and 10'. Shot to POA from all ranges. Groups really well. I am well pleased. Definitely going into my rotation.

Would you care to share what load(s) you tested with?

I've had good results, w/ the following target hand load:
Dardas 158LSWC-BB, .358" / 3.6 TiteGroup / Fed or Starline MAGNUM brass / WW Small Pistol Primers / Medium Crimp - Dillon / Lyman M Neck Expander Die
My M640-1 has amazingly uniform, .357" cylinder throats, & groups this mouse fart practice load - even better then my Speer 38 +P Gold Dot SB carry load.
YMMV

158 gr swaged with 3.2 gr of Bullseye in .38 and 158 gr hard cast with 12 gr AA #9 and Magnum primer 357 both shot well for me.

The Wolff Springs came in yesterday and I installed them today. Made a noticeable improvement on the trigger pull. Now I want about a week of above freezing weather to allow the range road to open up so I can shoot them. Still have about 3 feet of snow there and can't get the gate open.
I wish at times like this I was still in Wyoming where we used BLM land (Bureau of Land Management, not the other one). But my Dad says they have had as much snow as they used to have when I was a kid so we'd probably have to go in in 4 Low and chained up.
Still, dry firing them is not the same as live fire.
As much as I like winter this is kinda sucky.

DwayneV,
I was conceived in Shreveport, And when my father worked on the quarter boats in the gulf we lived about halfway between Houma and Thibodaux in Terrebonne Parish.
Having said that, I don't like fire ants eating my legs when I run over their mounds with a lawn mower and CHIGGERS come from miles away to get on me.
That's the secondary reason I live in North Dakota. The primary reason is Crowds make me very claustrophobic.
But I miss the way most folks treat you and truly miss the food.

Taroman, I used 158grain 38+p+ semi jacketed hollowpoints by winchester. Shot really well with minimal recoil and muzzle flip! I also used Sellier and Bellot 158 grain FMJ. Same results.

Finally took my 640 out for a test run. I probably shot 50 or so medium powered .38s and .357 handloads through it. It performed well but my finger was sore from that 12 lb. plus trigger. I ordered and installed an APEX trigger kit and added an XS tritium dot front sight. Trigger pull dropped to a bit over 8 lbs. and is smooth and crisp. The sights are more visible in daylight and are like a flashlight at night. I ordered a nice set of Altamont stocks which are backordered but should arrive in a week or two. I have wanted a Centennial model for a while but always seemed to be at the wrong place at the right time. Thanks to John Rippert for bringing this to our attention.

Not sure about the "new" type cylinder latch. I got my 640-1 in '96, as soon as they were available to me, and mine has the "new" type latch. My serial # also has a "CAW" prefix, which is not listed in any S&W material that I could find. I suspect, though, that the "W" was stamped upside-down, and should have been an "M", which would be consistent with the earlier 640-1's.

Would of shipped in......
March or April of 1996.
It's a normal prefix. I have six in my database. They're right between CAU and CAY.
CAM was in the December of 1995 to January of 1996 time frame. Have five of those.

Hate I'm just now seeing this. I've been wanting to pick up a 640 for sometime now, but they seem to be hard to come by in my neck of the woods. Hopefully they will get some more in before too long.

I think 640s are fairly scarce everywhere.
Most folks who buy them keep them.
I did buy one of these-
But now I do have some buyer's remorse-
I should have bought 2!

Bookmark the link and check whenever you get a chance. As I stated a few posts back, one showed up for a short time a day or so back. They might get a return and put it up again.

Yes, and you can join their email alert system as well, and they will send an email when and if they get more in. I'm like many of you, should have bought more than one!!! But I'm glad that my fellow forum members got so many of these wonderful little gems. I love mine. I only have four S&Ws with the new fangled MIM parts, and the 640-1 is one of them. But I keep telling myself not to be greedy, one was probably enough. Now, due to another thread, I'm looking for a 2" Combat Masterpiece. Scarce as hens teeth. And to think that I once had, briefly, a nickel plated one, and let it slip through my fingers.
Best Regards, Les

Thanks. I have a 640 no dash from 1990. Obviously it had no il but I'm glad to know it's mim free. I have a couple of newer Smiths that have locks and of course mim parts and I like them. But i do favor my older Smith's more.

Took side plate off mine, looked brand new! Cleaned barrel cylinder, looks like it has never been shot. It is scratched up but no residue or dirt anywhere I can find.

Good and or maybe bad news depending on how you look at it.
I called Centerfire and inquired about the future availability of additional 640's and the fellow I talked to said that they had tried but it wasn't working out for an additional shipment.
Let's hope that changes

Really glad I jumped on mine when I did.
Been running every other day with it tucked into a belly band with a speed loader or two. I'd like to get a kydex IWB holster but it carries rather well in the BB.

I also ordered a 640-1 from Centerfire Systems and am glad I did.
My archive letter arrived today and detailed, surprisingly, that it was purchased by the Michigan State Police and was shipped to its training division in Lansing in the summer of 1995.
All along I was thinking it was a California Dept. of Corrections gun given that they were selling CDC Model 10s concurrently.
Serial Prefix: BUC

Thanks, JustinL that's great information. You have pretty much confirmed where a few here thought they had come from.
If you don't mind can you say what your serial # starts with ? Mine is CAF5xxx. S&W said 1995.
I understand if you can't give out part of your serial number, but thanks again for your contribution.

Yeah, thanks a bunch, Justin!! That is really fantastic news. I'm sure that we are all in your debt...I too was thrown off by the CDC thing, those model 10s were even agency stamped on the frame. Now I kinda wish I had ordered on of the walnut stocked 10s as well, even though I already have two 4" ers.....

What type of lubrication (grease or oil) do they use on the interior parts - inside the side plate?

^^^^^^^^^^^If you jump up to post #483 it appears that Justin has the answer for where they came from.
Thanks Justin for posting that information.
And thanks again to John Rippert, OP, for posting these in the first place. Haven't messed with mine much but love the feel and look of it so far.

Now that everyone has had time to massage the 640's what grip/speed loader combinations are you using?
I have Safari comp-1's I use for all my centennials but now that I have the Ergo Delta grip on one the comp-1 hangs up. It works fine with Hogue Bantams, Crimson Trace LG305 and the Uncle Mike 59007's My 640's came with (just about brand new ones).
I'm thinking about shaving the Ergo Delta so the "hangup" goes away.
But what are you using and why?

My Comp II is working fine with the Delta Ergo stocks. So does an HKS.
Had it out again this weekend - what fun.

I have the Hogue Tamer and it works great. Handles magnums like it was a K-frame. It only sticks below the bottom of the grip frame 5/8".
Thanks Justin!!!!!!!

I got my steel main spring swivels from Gun Parts Corp. the other day and replaced the plastic ones on my 640 and 638. I also polished each main spring hammer strut. The trigger pull of each is a little bit smoother.

I was in there yesterday and they said that received some more. Said they wouldn't be ready until Friday or Monday. Guess I need to make another visit and pick out a good one before they are gone.

Let us know what you find out. I think it's interesting that these are not marked with the LE agency. The model 10's are stamped CDC. If memory serves me correctly these are Michigan LE trade ins?
Swissfan, could you verify that if it's convenient?

I know! For the price it's still a great buy and SS cleans up nicely. I have a truck and a jeep = need two truck guns and maybe a spare

I ordered another one. Not because I need it but because the price is so good. Three and a half bills? They are the best deal around!
les, get one. You'll kick yourself if you don't.

If it's similar to what you guys received already I'll be a happy camper. I'm looking forward to putting a little work into it. I was about ready to purchase a used one locally but for $150 more than the Centerfire. Glad I held off.
