I had an SP101 and one of the reasons I sold it was due to the DA trigger pull sucked IMO. I then bought an LCR 357 and it has been my main carry ever since. The trigger is awesome and your wife would have no problem pulling the trigger on it.
BUT The LCR is about $200 more than these S&W 640 are. Several that bought one of these 640 said it has a good trigger. I hope so.

First post here. I've been lurking about for a while.
Thanks to this thread I ordered one of these on Friday.
I've never ordered a firearm via the internet, much less sight unseen before.
Judging from the first batch posted here I couldn't resist, especially at this price! Hope I do as well as most of you.
USPS tracking says it is due to arrive at my FFL tomorrow.

Welcome from S/W Missouri Raydog.
I ordered mine at 11AM Friday. Got a receipt but no tracking #.
I tried the order number with my zip code and it shows nothing.
And I also have the customer number.
How did you get yours?

Centerfire sent me a confirmation email with a tracking number when they shipped it. I checked it this afternoon and the USPS site said it is due tommorow.

This is more like "what prize did you find in YOUR Cracker Jack Box". I got a .......................
I do hate waiting for good things that come in boxes.
Sounds like a punch line in a dirty joke, LOL.

Not quick or easy, but the only method I've found that really works:
First hand polish it with wet or dry sandpaper.
Start with 320 or 400, depending how bad an area is.
Then continue with progressively finer grades, up to 800 or 1000. 1000 is best on the flats.
After that I brush it back to the desired finish using a stainless steel wheel brush ( Brownells) mounted in my drill press.

Thanks, I may have to do some "testing" on some stainless pot and pans before I attempt it for real.
You did a great job!

That was the first thing I did! I like my SP101 and it has a good trigger but this 640 is a lot smoother. The SP101 has a spot that kinda stages the trigger right before the hammer falls but my 640 is smooth all the way back. On a scale of 1-10 I'd give the SP101 a 7 and the 640 a 9.5

Out of stock again. If they come back into stock I'll be ordering one. If not I'll try and get lucky bidding on GB.

Wow, they sold the first lot of X?, and then the second lot of 250 revolvers over a course of several days each. That's pretty amazing to me.

That's just great. Flood the market with hundreds of 640's AFTER I buy one.
Same thing happened in the late 90's when I cornered the .COM market.
Can't a guy ever catch a break????

The web site says they are out....strange. At least they are maintaining the price, rather than bumping it up.

Well, we are not the only forum where these are being discussed. And just think of how many were sold just as a result of this forum's discussions. Plus, Centerfire has their own list of regular customers who received emails that these were in stock. So it's not really all that remarkable that thy sold out already.
I just got off the phone with Kay in customer service. One of the above posters had commented on how efficient and helpful she is, and I second that motion... there was a mix-up over my dealer's FFL, and she was very helpful and personable in dealing with it. they had already prepared my gun for shipment, and were waiting for the FFL, which I thought they already had.
So I'm going to have to wait a few extra days, I ordered on Thursday... She says that they should be able to ship today, as soon as my dealer's FFL gets there.
I am really anxious... I'm always like a kid at Christmas when I'm waiting for a "new" (to me at least) gun to come in.
Edit: Just went back and checked... That was Ozark that spoke with Kay on Saturday....
Best Regards, Les

I would expect cooking pots' SS alloy to be very different (likely harder) than S&W metal.

Called Center Fire about my order. Will be shipped out today. YEAH.
Talked to a different CS named Sean, Shaun? but anyways CFS has got to have the best reps anywhere, phone rang twice, he tracked my order # and said it will be on the way by 5PM.
Told him CFS is very popular on S&W Forum. And his reply...until we run out. LOL.
And I just checked, they are now showing "out of stock".

Yea, I kinda figured that. Just a chance to try different techniques.
If I decide to try it on a revolver I'll tread lightly.
Thx.

I was looking for a used Model 60 and not finding anything locally cheaper than $575.
Found a dealer on another forum selling these same guns for $500 shipped and a couple of guys were very pleased with their guns.
I was tempted but am SO glad I waited.
Would have been bummed to buy one of those and then find this thread.

That is TAROMAN who did the brushed finish. I was asking how he did it.
Hopefully he'll be along to answer you.
Sorry.

Brownell's .0025" carding brush:
Extremely soft, for carding rust blue.
A heavier like .005" one might do even better on stainless.

Thanks to this bunch of enablers, I got on-board with the idea of getting one a couple of weeks ago, gave it a little time to think about....then they were out of stock.
I clicked a 'notify me when available' link on CFS and sure enough, late last week got the email showing availability.
NOT really good timing, as the wife and I are in the process of buying a house.
Anyway, pulled the trigger and ordered one. Called my shop to send FFL. All done, and it arrived today. The GS is also an outdoor range, and plan on going Thursday to shoot. (when our temps go back to 72*)
Will pick it up then and may even shoot it some.
Once more, I have SWF to thank for reducing my disposable income!
Thanks guys!

I bought a 640-1 too... just before these dropped.
So has everyone received a 640-1 or has it been a mixed bag?

Nice, very nice. No work needed, ready to go.
The detective who carried this one certainly cared about his equipment.

I'd assume they would take it off of the website if they weren't getting any more. Perhaps they are logging and checking them in batches or when they come into the shop.
Looks like they have my FFL on file too...

When I ordered mine I was told that they were all -1"s.
I'm going to pick mine up as soon as my FFL opens.

I have been thinking about that. Since these are supposedly from the CDC maybe they were carried by Probation Officers? Do they even have detectives?
Not that it really matters.

I did a little digging and found that Michigan State Police issued the 640 as a backup. Recently they went to Glock 17's and 26's as backup's so it's possible that where they came from.

I just got a new 640 Pro and I gotta say that this is an awesome gun. The size, weight, balance, and feel are just what I was looking for. Enjoy everyone!

Got one too, they had 3 left when I checked. I never got the email notification that they were back in stock, probably set to go out to the first people to sing up.
Not to bad, cheapest used 640 I could find started at 430.

OK, got it!
Lock up is tight, trigger is really nice!
Looks pretty good, the grips are seriously worn (I was really hoping for something other than the Uncle Mikes, they are to bulky for my taste), somebody did a Kindergarten level paint job on the front sight (easily fixed) and some minor surface scuffing . I'm going to do some light Mothers polishing and see how she looks then.
Over all a pretty sweat deal, I was very impressed with Centerfire.
I'm a happy camper. !
A couple of quick pix, straight out of the box:
