After stripping my 640-1, I ran the main parts in the dishwasher on max scrub setting.
Of course, this was done when Tarowoman wasn't around!

I ordered 2 of them and they are supposed to show up at FFLs on Saturday. One for me and one for him. He keeps an eye out for me and if I find something he can make a make a buck on I call him. We go out shooting together. Great to have a buddy with FFL. I did have tto wait a couple days to get him to email them a copy of his FFL as he was out of town. Need to email myself a copy and keep it handy on my cell phone I quess.

Anyway, I will give a report on both when they show up. I pack a 396 and have a 2 1/2 K frame 357. But, wife will like this I think with 38s

I have never bought a gun off the for sales here for him to resell. If I did I would wait till those here had a chance at it as per the rules!

Wasn't there a Sylvester Stallone movie where he was a cop, and his mother washed his gun in the dishwasher? There may be a precedent for this technique!!

Yeah, just found it... "Stop or My Mom Will Shoot".

Will be picking mine up today I hope. My FFL has a store front but is only open M-W-F for a hour and 1st and 3rd Saturdays 10am-6pm.
He's coming in to release the Sig 226 I bought (PD trade in) that came in yesterday and I'm hoping USPS delivers the S&W before noon today.
If it does, I'll take cell phone pics.
A reminder that I'm not high tech, and if you want to see it, PM me and I'll send my cell number. And then text it to you.
And NO... "no pics or it didn't happen" ****. OK?

Yeah, I ordered mine last Thursday, but there was a mix-up, not really anyone's fault....well, mine if anyone's. I did the online order, and they had my local dealer as a choice on the web site, and I just clicked on him. But they didn't have his latest FFL on file, so I didn't know that til this week, and got it to them, and the gun is here in town with USPS today, so I'm hoping that it will be delivered before my FFL closes. I bought a set of stocks off of ebay, and they came yesterday. So hopefully I'll have something to post today or tomorrow!!!

Best Regards, Les

I had heard of this when I bought a stainless Ruger Old Army years ago - the big black powder revolver they made for many years. Black powder residue being particularly nasty if you don't get it ALL off, and hot soapy water being one of the recommended solvents, I removed the grips and took out the inner mechanical parts, then put the frame and cylinder in the dishwasher. Ran the full cycle, and the stainless parts came out pristine. But the black carbon steel front sight was covered in a thin layer of rust.

Probably shouldn't have let it go through the dry cycle. But it took so much trouble to get the rust off that front sight that I never tried the dishwasher again.

Made the mistake of not signing up for a an account. I got the confirmation for my order and my FFL is on file but no tracking info.

Only 2 days in but hoping my buddy calls me that it's arrived.

If you call and speak with Kay or one of the other CS reps, give them you r order number, and they will be able to tell you exactly what is going on. Very nice and helpful folks!

Doesn't look like a 640 to me, see the rounded 649 ish top portion.

Default You pay your money and take your chances.....

First, thank you John Rippert for bringing the 640's to my attention.
Secondly, thank you to Centerfire systems for the way they do business. I ordered the gun on a Thursday night after receiving their "in stock" e mail, gun was shipped Friday. Lgs received it Monday, picked the gun up yesterday.
Overall, I would rate the revolver as very good condition. Better than most I am seeing photos of, on par with what Erich posted. No paint on the sight ramp, no gunk in the internals, serviceable rubber stocks.
IMO an excellent value. Hope the rest of you guy's are as happy with your's.

Just picked mine up, VERY HAPPY.
Tight lock up, great trigger, great bore, no blem's and clean. Grips are good. Could load it up and carry it right now.
Many thanks to Center Fire System's.

I will probably get the one owned by the only masocist who went to the range everyday and poured a box of 357s though the thing. LOL.

Getting that 640 would be far better than getting eggs & mother fudders in your C Rat's in my opinion.
At least you can find someone to trade the 640 to, the C Rats, no way.

I just received mine and although it is a little dirty with some fine scratches I couldn't be happier. The lockup and timing seem great and I will clean it up soon.

I got an email from Centerfire today that they needed a copy of my FFL's info. I texted my buddy who said that they(Centerfire)called his partners shop to confirm. He'll be sending a copy of his info out to them.

More wait time means more time to choose a decent holster.

I think my brother got that one. His was obviously dropped and looks like it rolled down a flight of stairs. I felt bad for telling him to buy one, but he cleaned it up and it's a lot nicer now.

Mine looked a lot better out of the box, but the lock-up isn't so great. I just ordered a new lock bolt, spring and pin with hopes of tightening it up a bit. My brothers locked up like a vault.

I guess it's all a roll of the dice.

Well, I ordered mine just a week ago, and the mix-up on the FFL was the only hold up. The lady that I spoke with at Centerfire, Kay, was very helpful, and told me that they had packed mine up when I ordered, so it was set aside, even if they ran out before I got my FFL there, I would still have the one that I ordered.

Anyway, it came in today. I had bought a set of Eagle Rosewood "Secret Service" stocks for it, which came in yesterday. I had always thought about getting some of these, but had read mixed reviews on the boards, but thought "Why not" for this project gun. I thought they would be used, but they came new in the factory packaging... I'll show you in a minute...

Anyway, I am quite pleased with my 640-1. And glad I bought it. It sure looks like a case of carried much, and shot little to me. It was semi-dirty when I opened the box this afternoon:

The insides were only modestly dirty, and still had a dab of lube showing:

Anyway, after disassembling, scrubbing, cleaning out, drying off, and relubing, and reassembling, her she is with the new stocks:

I have to say that this has turned out to be a very nice project. The trigger pull is smooth and slick. The cylinder locks up tight, indexes perfectly, there is no end-shake, and the bore and chambers are clean and look perfect to me.

Now, I will try to get a few rounds down range this weekend.

Best Regards, Les

Still waiting on mine. The USPS isn't winning any points in this area with delivery and with the supposedly text updates which are non existent. The good old USPS.........well that's another thread and topic by itself.
The waiting is killing me!!!!

Default Lucky Eddie

I helped my friend who doesn't have a computer order 2 S&W 640s last Friday. They showed up at our FFL today. The problem is they were 2 model 10's that were pretty rough. So he did not except them and called me crying.
By the time he showed up at my house he was worried they would not take them back or they would be out of the 640's. We called and talked to nice young lady in customer service. They had discovered the mistake the same day they shipped. They already had shipped replacements. Now the reason we call him Lucky Eddie: the Rep told me they were sold out when they discovered the mistake and she had to take 2 from their display case to send LUCKY EDDIE.
Im expecting the one I ordered tomorrow. I'm sure I'll be crying when I compare mine to his cherry picked two.

For those of you that missed out and are ok with dropping a few more bucks. Summit gunbroker has trade in 640-1s for $399.
Firearms, Guns, Rifles. Grain Valley, Missouri.

Got mine today. A few dings on the top strap. Cleaned up a little and
used Rem Oil after cleaning the insides.
A little Mothers on some of it and removed the white paint that was on the front sight.
Changed the grips. Action and timing were right on. DA seems better
then most DAO S&W's I have tried. Look's like it was carried a lot and shot little.

My S&W 640-1 arrived. The condition looks just like Glashaus' revolver. It is clean inside and out. Overall I am pleased and feel that I got a good deal from Centerfire Systems.

The only difference from Glashaus' is the stamped lettering and S&W logo appear to be faint and lighter than they should be. My revolver may have buffed up in the past. Have any of you received one that may have been re-finished?

I installed an Apex spring and firing pin kit for an improved DA trigger pull. A pair of Altamont combat super rosewood checkered grips are on order. I can't wait to shoot it this weekend.

Great looking guns, fellas!! Glad you are happy too. Glashaus, you lucky dog!! hahaha Finally got mine all cleaned-up and even the black goo broke-down overnight and wiped right off this afternoon. Yuck! Had a rough time getting it back together.....shot the cylinder lock spring across the garage. Dah. Found it after quite some time! Gun is reassembled with the new 360J grips on it and seems to function fine. I'm not used to a hidden hammer so don't know just how to check for a tight lock-up. But, it seems okay. Got all the lead out of the barrel and chambers too. Sure like the feel of this early gun compared to the new stuff they are putting out. I sure can feel the difference!!! This is solid. I plan to try a couple different methods to clean-up the finish, probably using a couple different Scotchbrite Pads and some Mothers if it looks too brushed. I hate to go to the mirror finish unless I have no choice. This is fun!

Do you think the XS front sight I had just put on my 360J would fit this J-frame too?

Checking for lockup is easy, as you pull the trigger you should be able to see the lock fall into place, on the bottom of the cylinder, and not be able to turn the cylinder BEFORE you hear the hammer fall. Do this with each chamber to make sure.

Kieslers, a police distributor, had 1000 of these in stock for several months. I just got my weekly email from them and they are now down to 489. So I guess dealers have caught wind and started purchasing them.

I think we all owe JohnRippert a big thanks for starting this thread and alerting us to these cool guns!!

Anyway, John, thanks from me. I have been having a great time watching as everyone gets their guns, and hearing the excitement over not just a good deal, but getting an older, solid Smith without the dreaded IL, and having fun rehabbing and cleaning them up. This is just the kind of gun that I like too, not too new, not beat up, don't have to worry about maintaining the finish, powerful, compact, and a great bargain!!

And thanks to everyone who has shared their treasures as well!!!

Best Regards, Les

More than what centerfire is selling them for. I think Kieslers has them advertised for 399 retail on their website. Dealer price is a tiny bit less than that. I can only assume purchasing several hundred revolvers may net you a nice discount. I was shocked when I saw Centerfire's pricing on these. They are a steal. Any FFL should still be able to snag one from Kieslers as they still had plenty in stock based on the last email I saw.

Mine came today, picked it up at lunch. Great shape with a bit of character. Much better trigger than my current 640-1, but the ejector rod is a bit sticky so the innards are probably gummy too. I'll pop the side plate after dinner, it's going to get a good cleaning.

Then too decide on grips.

I'm real happy with the score !

No carbon rings, but the yoke screw is pretty buggered up, I think the face got cleaned regularly on a buffer.

Rings on the blast shield.

Ding on the top strap.

I think you have to be LEO, first responder or military to purchase from Kieslers anyway.
I put 1 in my cart, hit checkout, and it say's request a quote. Will not go to checkout unless you have Department info.
Was not going to buy one anyway, wanted to see what the final price would be.
Tried 3 times.

Mine arrived this afternoon and I am pleased with the one that I got. It has a few shallow scratches and typical handling marks which one would expect. it isn't perfect but it is a nice example. Clean up was quick. Just a few passes with a solvent soaked brush and clean patch and the barrel and cylinder were shiny and clean. I pulled the side plate and was surprised to find it clean and well lubed. The previous owner was either a gun guy or was tight with the armorer. I may replace the grips later but they are OK though showing some wear. Good weather here , close to 80, so.I will test it tomorrow at the range.

Picked mine up from my FFl today and was pleasantly surprised. Thanks again to the OP I made sure not to miss out after they were out of stock after the 1st go around. Too good of a deal!

Removed the well used Uncle Mikes grip for my $5 Gun Show Special Pachmyr Compacs. No major gouges or scratches so i just did a quick wipe down with a micro-fiber. Almost too nice to do anything more than open it up and clean up the insides if needed.

Now should I even polish it up or leave it as is? And I will be adding an XS standard dot front sight and maybe an Apex spring kit I had saved for my m360. But again the trigger pull is already just about as smooth as my 327pc.. I guess a decision can only be made after getting some rounds thru it. Can't wait for range day!

Yeah I forgot to mention that in my post. I have an FFL and I'm on their weekly e-mail inventory list. They don't charge a CC fee or anything just shipping, which is reasonable.

Does that mean you can get some and ship to my FFL even though I'm not LEO, responder or retired military?

Smoking deal. I went a day or two ago out of curiosity to the site and they were sold out.

Yes. Or any FFL can order from them.

Finally found a few minutes to go out and put a few rounds through my 640-1. This is one sweet shooter even with my bad old eye sight and shooting off hand.

I could only shoot at about 25 feet due to constraints but all the rounds went into a very tight group and centered right where I wanted them and the revolver was very pleasant to shoot. The first round was off low but centered but once I saw that and made the sight adjustment I had no problem putting the rounds where I wanted them.

I was only using .38 special and I know it wouldn't be that pleasant with .357. It's now loaded with Speer 135 grain +P .38 special short barrel.

I am very happy with this revolver. I wish I had bought two.

The USPS came through!. The second 640 has the newer thumb latch and MIM trigger and the S&W logo is smaller. It was also gummed up around the rubber stocks and internals pretty bad.
The finish is typical of what has been reported by the forum members that have picked these up. I'm well pleased with both of them.
It was an easy clean up though and the timing and lock up and trigger seem to be spot on. I would like to find someone local that could do a bead blast finish on them.
Here are a couple of pictures with both 640's.

Nice, enjoy!

I also have pre- and post-MIM 640-1s. Hogue Tamers on post- and S&W-logo Bantam grips on the pre-, love 'em both. I can't tell any significant performance difference between the forged & MIM triggers. Likewise the different thumb latches and the S&W logo being smaller on my post-MIM 640-1.

There is a subtle difference I noticed - the opening in the barrel underlug is slightly longer in my post-MIM 640-1. You see something similar looking near the muzzle, between the pin in the underlug and the opening?

I received mine yesterday and noticed after I got home that the scroll marks are very light. It looks like they were laser etched instead of being stamped. Overall I would rate the gun as good as it has a lot of scratches and a few burs. It doesn't look like it's been shot very much.

I seem to recall a long post by a S&W engineer in one of the forged/MIM threads on this forum, in which he described how the MIM process worked, and said they stopped refining the process details when Jerry Miculek couldn't tell whether they'd put MIM or forged parts in his gun.

Paul, I'm glad that yours arrived, and you are happy with them. I was with Old Corp when his arrived yesterday. It was a little rough but it shot well well, until we got to the "full tilt" .357 magnum ammo. The revolver handled it better than either one on us did. Next time I'm down that way we'll get up for coffee or a bite to eat, OK..

Fred
