Default S&W 640-1 Police Trade In at Centerfire

I actually work across the street from Centerfire and picked one up yesterday. The one's that were in the shop, 12 to 15 of them were all 640-1. Most had the factory grips (Uncle Mike's) a few had pachmayr, said that they had one with wood grips that sold earlier in the morning . I looked through them all and picked what I thought showed the least wear and original grips. Can't wait to get to the range. I asked and they didn't know where/what department they came from. As usual most wear looked to be holster/carry wear.

I ordered some hogue bantam grips for mine. I thought I had some in a drawer but remembered that I sold them with another gun. I have gotten pretty good at bead blasting, so I am going to do it to this one. I have blasted about 12 guns so far. I will post before and after pictures.

I understand The Glock Store in San Diego does transfers for
$15. Are you close?

Quick question to all. Do you believe these will have been used lightly as far as round count? Hopefully mine won't be out of time or need any tuning as I plan to shoot magnums through it. After all, I didn't buy it to shoot 38's only through it. Last question, do you all recommend 158, 140 grain over 125's as far as wear on the gun is concerned? Thanks in advance

I received my shipping notice today as well so figure by Monday, with my work schedule and holiday, I should have it in my hands.

I almost bought a PD trade in 640 earlier in the year from a dealer in state but he had a 649 that called my name instead.

When I saw these I noted there were 2 left and said to myself that if there is one left when I wake up then I am pulling the plug. When I woke up in the afternoon there was one there and that was after the postings about them being sold out.

HOW COULD I IGNORE KARMA SENDING ME THIS MESSAGE?

Wanted to take a minute to THANK JohnRippert for posting the information here!!! It is much appreciated.

If you've never owned a 640 you're in for a real treat.

Or if you have owned one, for that matter.

Just picked mine up. Overall cosmetic is good with a few small dings. Action is excellent as is timing and lockup. Bore looks great. Under the grips had some dried oil. Sometime this weekend I will try and reblue the front sight and bead blast the rest of the gun. Hogue bantams are on the UPS truck as I type. Well worth the $375 paid which includes credit card and FFL fees.

Just got back home with mine. Serial number BUC puts it at 2003.
Trigger is smooth and lock up and timing seem to be right on. Same here with scuff and carrying marks. Well satisfied for price.
Here are the wedding pictures.

Just received my 640-1 from Centerfire Systems.
Uncle Mike's grips are worn out. Gun is filthy.
I cannot understand that someone who trusts his
life to his weapon does not keep it clean.

At least they greased the grips before installing.

A "little bit" of lint in the works.

Some slight staining, but should all come out.

Overall in good shape. The gun will clean up nicely. Action is nice and smooth and all is quite tight.
Now I wished I had ordered another, all in all better than expected.

Mine looks like the rest. BUB serial, 1995. Great bore, very tight, nice trigger. Will post more pics of interior when I get to cleaning it tomorrow. Since I transferred two pistols, CZ 75 SP-01 Shadow, my FFL only charged me $30 for both.

ETA: Interior pic

Red loctite on the sideplate screws and very, very dry. Sideplate was the toughest I have had to get off.

Send me yours and answer will be yes!

Definitely no desk jockeys in this group of photos. I would be ashamed to turn in a gun this dirty.

Police Officer guns for many officers are shot twice a year for qualification and training. Some officers will qualify not bother to clean it and when they report for their next qualification and their gun is inspected clean it because a range officer told them to. It will be done but poorly. That said after a good cleaning most of these revolvers make great carry or range guns. They are scuffed up but usually mechanically in good shape. Those of you who bought one of these 640's did very well. Great gun at a great price. Good luck and enjoy.

If I didn't already have one I'd have grabbed one in an instant. It was my carry gun for years, with 38 Special 158g +Ps. They were tolerable to shoot a few at a time, but I mostly shot lower power cowboy loads at the range - the steel gun made those tolerable for hundreds of rounds. It's amazing what you can do with one of these short barrels if you practice enough.

My grips were Crimson Trace LG-305s. They are almost as comfortable to shoot as my non-laser preference, Pachmayr Compacs, but of course have the laser.

In spite of the laser, I paint the front sight of most of my guns with bright red/orange nail polish over a white base. Stainless steel rear sights get a coat of matte black model paint, typically applied as a single drop on the end of a toothpick and then spread around the visible surfaces. Easy and cheap to do, and makes things MUCH easer to see with my ageing eyes.

That is pretty much what I am thinking of with the one I got. It is sitting in a bucket of Ed's Red for tonight and tomorrow will get stripped, cleaned and lubed. Sounds like a good Saturday, hmm?

Well, I missed the boat on this one, but I don't feel too bad, as I found a 640-1 Pro Series earlier this year at a farm supply store, of all places, what we here in WV call a "Feed Store". It was a little more expensive than the deals you guys got, but I like the being cut for moon clips, and the tritium adjustable sights, which are much easier for my old eyes to see anyway.

I just came from their web site, and they still have some model 10 4" police trade ins with rubber grips and ILs, have already sold out of the walnut stocked versions. At $399.

Best Regards, Les

As much as I spent in December on handguns I am going to have to cool off for a while.(Famous last words)

The gunshow is in Pasadena again this weekend. There is still time for me to go hog wilder.

Heck, didn't realize where you were located. Your not too far. I was thinking about going to the Pasadena show, but like you, I've spent WAY TOO MUCH since mid November. Got some gems though. Ended up with a really cool 19-5 4", a 624 3" Lew Horton, a 624 6.5", this 640 and I traded for a 3" 66-2.

Well I made the mistake of googling for a S&W model 640 to go with this 640-1 and found one at the Cablea's in NY. It's being shipped to my local Cablea's and will be here next Thursday. Yep - compulsive/obsessive with hoarder tendencies.
Now I have to look for two sets of stocks.

John, and qbqllwill:

Just wait until Sunday. That will be 2017, and you can forget about how much you spent in 2016. That will no longer factor into your budget. You are starting afresh!!!

I am in the same boat. I was just thinking back over the 2016 purchases, and really had not realized how many guns I had bought, and a lot of them weren't even Smiths.

We are having another local show near here the weekend of the 7th-8th, and it is with a clear coscience that I will go, knowing I have bought nothing all year!!!

Best Regards, and Happy New Year!!!

Les

Those internals look bone dry. Also thanks for the internal picture. I didn't know that the Centennial models did not have hammer blocks.

Mine also arrived today at the LGS.
Same condition as the others. Uncle Mike's grips.
Unfortunately the State Police background check system was down so will have to wait until next week.
Did get to handle it. Wonderful, smooth trigger.

IIRC... None of the Centennials, all the way back to 1952, have had the hammer block. Many folks believe that this eliminates another source of friction, which makes the Centennial series potentially smoother than any other Smith hand ejector design since WWII, when the hammer blocks were introduced in othe models.

Best Regards, Les

Do you mind posting the first three or four serial numbers of your 640-1. Thanks

I bought one of these when they first came out. I had just gotten my first carry permit. Sold it to buy an auto for carry. It's been at the top of my "wish I had it back list" for many years. Saw this thread and went right to the site intending to jump on one. Missed out like a lot of others on these but drowned my sorrow in a bucket of 60-9 LS on GB

JohnRippert thank you for the link!

Mine looks as dirty inside as yours.

Just spent 2 1/2 hours cleaning out the inside. If I thought the trigger was good before, it is even better after a good cleaning.

Settled on a pair of Houge Tamers I had in my spare parts.

Will be shooting tomorrow with my son and brother, I'll let everyone know how it shoots.

They are quite comfortable. They have an extra cushion inside on the area that hits the web of your hand. Looks like a piece of Dr. Scholl's foot gel. We'll see how they work with 357 magnums!

At least yours was not bone dry when you opened it up. I expect the trigger to be sweet after I get mine back together, as good as it was without lube.

I have a question. These 640's obviously weren't a primary weapon so how would a LEO carry one?
Or were they primary weapons?

The most common way to carry is in an ankle holster.
