Maybe that is why they look so 'kicked' around and dirty.

After its bath overnight in Ed's Red my 640 cleaned up pretty easy. Took me about an hour to get it apart, clean it, and put it back together. A little work with a brass brush but mostly scrub with a toothbrush. I tossed the worn out Uncle Mikes and put a set of grips from my stash on it. Trigger is sweet and I look forward to carrying this one. Need to get some of the .38 Special +P 158gr rounds for it.

Not dry any more.

Looks good. I did the same with mine. It wasn't as dirty as some of the previous pictures but it was bone dry.

I kinda like those white stocks on it.

JohnRippert,

I couldn't help but grin when I saw the universal Armour's tool in the upper center of the disassembled pic.

No offense meant but with those bonded Ivory stocks she would look a lot better polished. The shoes are too pretty for the dress. LOL Happy New year! hardcase60

If it's good enough for Kuhnhausen, it's good enough for me.

If I can ever clear out enough room in the garage I will put together my bead blasting cabinet that is still sitting in the box. Then I can give that 640 a good going over and pretty it up a bit.

Default Went to the range today

First cylinder at 25 feet.
Shoots nice, great trigger, really nice and smooth.

We shot 100 130 grain .38's and 50 125 grain Remington
magnums, the hot ones. very controllable but quite a bit more recoil than the specials.

As you will find, if you don't know it already, the magnum length J frames will almost completely extract a 38 Special case. On those occasions when I practice a fast reload, I find this to be a benefit of magnum frames over the 1/4 inch shorter-barreled 38 Special models.

I always thought a 38 Special 158g +P was perfectly sufficient for self defense purposes, but if you think you need more the Buffalo Bore 158g +P is even more potent than other commercial +P rounds with the same bullet. The standard pressure BB 158g load exactly equals Remington's (much cheaper) +P round in my guns, while the BB +P with a gas check on the same bullet is almost 200fps faster out of a 2" barrel. And if you need bragging rights, that BB +P 38 matches the velocity of BB's low recoil 357 Magnum round with the same bullet, so you can honestly tell your buddies that you're carrying "357 Magnum power," all the while getting the easier extraction of the shorter 38 cases. A win-win, for those who keep score.

I noticed a couple times they went from sold out to having one or two available. I was just curious and kept checking the page.

Well I found the time to strip mine down, bead blast it and put its new shoes on. I use some ospho blue on the front sight. The insides of mine were pretty clean. Here are the before and after pics. I'm well pleased

Mine was filthy when I got it. Cleaned it up and the barrel looks brand new. Took to the range and put a box of 158 grain magnums through it. Love this bad boy. I'm going to slap some Hogues on it and ditch the Uncle Mike's. With a little more trigger time I will tighten these 5 yard groups

I load my +P 38s with Power Pistol.
Might flash a bit with that 2" barrel.

Here's my 640-1 from Centerfire. The tracking number said that it would be delivered on the 3rd, but it showed up early. Like others, the gun was filthy. The front sight has a couple small dings, so I plan to file the peened areas smooth and cold blue it. I soaked the insides of the gun in Kroil, then blasted it out with Gun Srcubber and then lubed. I didn't take off the side plate, but will soon. Gun had a grungy, oxidized appearance, so I lightly flitzed it. Also flitzed some freckles and discoloration from the trigger.

I notice that mine has the newer style cylinder release latch. Most look like they have the older style.

Hey, guys.... I just checked Centerfires web page on a whim, and they have one of the 640s in stock!!! I almost bought it, but I have half a dozen of the centennial style S&Ws already, and there's a local gun show this week, so I'm passing on it. Looking at the above projects, I should probably get it anyway, but if I'm not, I'd like to see a fellow forum member do so. These look like a really good deal.

Best Regards, Les

Yeah, Erich, as soon as I typed and posted, I went back over to their page, and it was gone already!!! They must have a few dribbling in from time to time...I would suggest that anyone still interested in one check regularly. I think these are great little bargains. I have a 640-1 Pro Series, and have almost twice the dollars in it. It does have some bells and whistles, like front and rear tritium drift adjustable sights that are actually large enough for my old eyes, but other than that are just about the same gun. They also have enough mass that the 357 round is not as punishing. Add to that that these surplus guns are lock free, and what's not to like??

Best Regards, Les

My Centerfire guns have the old style, but I picked up another 640-1 recently that has the new style. I'd assumed it was replaced by a previous owner, but I'm not sure when they started using the new style.

I finally managed to get mine picked up and I must say it appeared to be in pretty good shape. The UM grips on it had some sort of name tape on there that has put a substance on the grips that will need to be cleaned but under the grips was pretty clean.

Haven't taken the side plate off yet to see what is under there.

Was thinking about going the bead blast look with a different front sight put on but this one isn't as beat up as I thought it would be and the front sight is blued with some paint on it. Now clearly the paint needs some work but the blued front sight is kind of nice.

Mine was pretty battered, lots of dings and scratches, bottom of the barrel I guess.
Extractor was glued in place with dried out lube.

Innards not too bad, no rust, just dried lube:

Dropped it on the bench and look what happened:

Have been polishing on it for a few days now and will then card it back to a brushed finish.
More pic's when it's done.

Well, I resisted this morning, and the one they had disappeared, but as I went back over this thread, it's just too good a deal to pass up. And seeing everyone's guns cleaning up so nicely...and you guys know I love cleaning up oldies like this anyway, and the price is fabulous. I guess my centennial collection is going to grow one more!!

Just ordered, and they are still showing 10+ in stock!!

They just sent me an email confirming my order, so I guess I'm good to go...they had my buddies FFL on file, so no delay there.

Best Regards, Les

Just looking over my invoice from Centerfire Systems and notice the "handgun signature fee". I've never heard of this before. Is this something Required in Kentucky or is it something like the car dealer document fees?

I think that's just the standard adult signature required fee from USPS. I have a feeling they just renamed it.

I'd like to thank our friends les b. and TruckGun for the emails they sent me as soon as they saw these were once again available. We were at a neighbor friend's having supper, but I was able to sneak away for a few minutes ("Sorry! Business stuff!") and get mine ordered and on its way to my man with the FFL.

Les and Chris, when you're in ABQ let me know, and the cervezas and enchiladas are on me! Many thanks!

Received mine yesterday. Looks like it was fed a steady diet of WD-40, and was quite "cosmetically challenged". Mechanically good though, and doesn't appear to have been fired much.

No evidence the sideplate had ever been off. Also, the serial prefix is "CEU"....and the caliber line, and logo and other frame and bbl markings are etched, not stamped.

Aha WD40.
That must be the sticky goop in and on mine.
Guess that outfit never had weapons inspections.

So it looks like I'll be doing a complete break down cleaning...
Oh, well, nothing else to do the temp around 13 and snow over a foot deep with more to come.

Did your revolver come from the first batch or the second batch.
The reason I'm asking - the first batch photos showed the old thumb latch and this second batch is showing the new style thumb latch. Really don't know that it makes that much difference as far as the stamping vs etching, which might be more of a serial number range.

Mine was ordered early (Dec 26th), but the order was not finalized until after new years. I'm not sure if my example was pulled and set aside when I ordered it.....or if it was pulled out of the second batch on Jan 2.

Mine is (was) by far the worst example cosmetically speaking, when looking at the photos posted here. Fortunately, the SS finish cleans up quite well.

I'm going to list this one as among the top ten in the "Hall of Shame" of the worst cosmetic disasters among police carry firearms I've dealt with over the last 40+ years.
