I'm going to do some light Mothers polishing and see how she looks then.

Over all a pretty sweat deal, I was very impressed with Centerfire.

I'm a happy camper. !

A couple of quick pix, straight out of the box:

Looks good and you got the old style latch which I prefer. Good for you!!

All this 640 talk made me grab mine this morning. I though about my ammo strategy and decided to load 110grain 357 in the cylinder and speed strips with 125 grain +Ps in the speed loaders. I can always reload with the long nose 38s as fast as a 45 mag change. The longer 357 rounds take too much concentration and fiddling with the uncle Mike's combat grips. I want to hit them hard if needed. If I have time and cover I can use the speed strips which are equally fast with the long cartridges. If speed is of the essence then I go for the 38s.

Thanks, I'm glad it does, I much prefer the older style too.

I just called S&W and they said it was manufactured in 1995.

Picked up some Herrett's Shooting Star stocks.
Just the right size and balance for the 640's bulk and weight.

Consider this one finished...

I ordered my 640 Sunday. My LGS was closed Monday so Centerfire just got FFL info today. I will be lucky if I see the gun by Friday now which means probably next Tuesday before I get it. What a bummer this waiting stuff is. I couldn't live in CA with all that waiting for approval stuff.
Taroman that looks great.
I am wondering would getting a good set of Hogues be best to tame the recoil on this 640? Any suggestions for good looking grips for taming the recoil?

I just picked up mine from my FFL. It is very clean, old style latch, very few marks. Has yellow paint on the front sight, very nice trigger. I am very happy with it.

Mine has been delayed in transit (evidently the mail can't be delivered in snow in NC)!! Hopefully tomorrow.

Well I couldn't resist, darn you S&W forum!
Picked mine up today, and mechanically it seems ok. A little rough on the outside and absolutely filthy. Grips (UM rubber) are trashed. Ejector rod was glued shut due to old oil all gummed up. It is now sitting in a bath of PB Blaster, side plate, cylinder, and grips off. I'll have to find some decent grips for it. And a OWB leather holster, though it will mainly be the ankle gun. Overall it's a bargain as new ones are twice the price.

Sounds just like mine.
They do clean up surprisingly well given a little (or lot of) effort.

josp, when you say the ejector rod was glued do you mean it wouldn't unscrew or it wouldn't push to eject casings ? Just wondering because mine is supposed to be here tomorrow and with all the stories of the lube acting like glue I am trying to figure out how I'm going to clean it.

I don't have a lot of cleaning supplies and not that skilled at cleaning and trying decide on how to approach this.

I guess I'll have to use brake cleaner since I don't have any gun scrubber or any cleaner to soak it in. Anyone else have any other poor mans ideas to cleaning ? Thanks

Get a quart of transmission fluid and a quart of acetone (paint dept) and a quart of kerosene (hardware store) mix it all up and store in seal-able gallon metal container. Remove grips, Lay gun in deep cake pan, pour on mixture, wait 24 hours, Remove gun, spray down with real hot water inside and out, place in oven at 300-350 for an hour. Use your favorite lube on wear points if sideplate is off, if not get some in by trigger and hammer. touch on extractor.

Pour mixture back in container using a funnel with a wadded up rag in it for a filter.

S&Wrevolverfan,
It wouldn't eject cartridges if there were any loaded. Took the screw out that secures the cylinder and pulled the cylinder off, then off the yoke. After that it worked. It's just gummed up cause it was not cared for in its first life. Normal for an issue gun. Any penetrating oil will clean off the old dry **** for you, just have to be patient. If you know how to take off the side plate, douse that area too and clean it out with gun scrubber or brake cleaner, then lightly oil the connections. Mine will be a carry gun so some marks on the outside are character for me. Enjoy!

josp, thanks. I will do that, I know their not perfect and actually want one that is kind of scratched up so I don't have to worry about it.

I have an old S&W screw driver that use to come with them years ago that I will be using. I don't have any of the gunsmithing bits or drivers. Don't really want to bugger up the screws but guess it really won't matter on this one.

I have a couple of the Buds gunshop model 10 Victoria police trade in revolvers and kind of messed their screws up using a regular screwdriver so I'll try the old S&W one. The model 10's were really clean and didn't require much cleaning like some of the 640-1's do.

Thanks again

S&Wrevolverfan, I think the screwdriver you speak of was used as a sight adjustment tool. You might want to just use the ATF, kerosene and acetone trick until you can get the right screwdrivers.

gman51, the gunsmith screwdrivers are parallel ground and the width matches the screw slots to preclude any marring of the screw.

serger, you are right now that I look at it. It's to small for anything but adjustments. And thanks to steelslaver, josp, and yourself the cleaning suggestion.

Even though I am not buying one it is really cool to watch all of you share in your excitement of ordering, receiving, cleaning, and displaying the "sight unseen" 640's.

Thanks for spending money for my enjoyment!

S&Wrevolverfan, here's a link to Fr. Frogs cleaner and lubricant page. It has other stuff you might find useful for gun cleaning and maintenance.

The above recipe has been around a long time. Many call it Ed's Red. Works as well as Kroil. I use it for many things including loosing up stuck threads.

Many people shudder at the thought of water on their guns. While leaving water on them is not good, real hot water, warms up the gun enough that any small remainder will quickly evaporate unless some gets trapped. Hence, the oven trick it will cause any trapped moisture to steam off. 350f is well below the temperature that will effect any tempered parts. My dad was into muzzle loaders big time and taught us to clean out black powder barrels by removing from stock, take off nipple and stick breech in bucket of hot soapy water then run a patched jag down the barrel and it would work as a pump and suck the hot soapy water up and down the barrel as you swabbed and get it clean. Then a couple dry patches and then one with a bit of oil.

I often use the Ed's Red or sometimes just straight kerosene for cleaning up old gunked up guns, but never had a need to use water afterwards. Straight kerosene will evaporate and excess Ed's Red can be blown out or away with an air hose. The remainder won't hurt anything. I agree that the water won't hurt anything either as long as you make sure you dry it out good and lube afterwards.

Steelslaver,

I saw your variant of Mr. Harris's excellent cleaner/lube and thought I should share one of the good sites that has it and other "needful" stuff for us.

My order is in town today and this afternoon once the FFL has time to enter it into his Bound Book I will be picking the order up. It shipped from Kentucky @6PM, Jan 9 2017 and I should have it @6PM, Jan 11 2017. 2 days is pretty good for the Post Office for a 1200 mile journey with the weather as it is.

I'm in Dallas and the shipping pretty much mirrored yours. I am hoping to get the call today 😁

I am feeling like Centerfire dropped my order in the dirt. They finally got my FFL information yesterday morning but they still haven't shipped the gun. I don't understand why their shipping department didn't ship the gun yesterday since the FFL was completed in the morning Tuesday. Here it is Wed. and when I called it still hadn't been processed in shipping.

Well hot diggity dog! I received an email that the gun has been shipped. It shipped USPS so I don't expect any quick 2 day delivery. Strange that people can't send guns by USPS but an FFL can. I thought handguns by law had to be delivered by no more than second day delivery. I am finding that evidently isn't true. Also USPS tracking sucks rotten eggs.

Tracking says delivery is supposed to be this Friday 13th and I sure hope it arrives on time.

Picked mine up at lunch. Carried a lot and barely shot. It is clean, lock up is good, trigger is good, lots of small scratches from being carried. Very pleased.

Give them a call. Doesn't' sound right. You should have received an acknowledgement email at least.

I did not receive an email confirmation that my gun was shipped, but I went back and checked my order and there was a tracking number there.
You might check that way.

Because of this thread I had to buy one of the 640-1s and then registered for this forum. I also bought a model 10 with rubber grips from Centerfire, the pic showed a model 10-14 but it ended up being a model 10-10 so no internal lock and old enough to have the firing pin on the hammer. Both had cosmetic scratches and holster wear, but everything locks up great and functions fine.

John Fugate: they had another shipment come in a week ago... keep your eye out on the website if you missed out on one, they may have more.

Obligitory photos...

Welcome from S/W Missouri.
I snagged a 640, but hesitated on the 10 with rubber grips.
Both of yours look great. CONGRATS.

Thumbs up Received mine today

Well, here it is. It appears it was polished at some point; so, my first step of polishing out the scratches to a nice shine should go smoothly, pun intended! I may try to use the hammer/sandpaper trick to fix the polished top strap. Did you notice the tiny yellow piece of paper stuck in the spider web in the bore? hahaha Guess mine was stored for a time! Everything is tight and sticky, just waiting for a "Dunk"ing. Thanks for this thread! Hopefully, I will post pics after I restore it.

Dave

Dave Baird, I got mine today as well and is much like yours it looks good, just a little sticky but will clean up nicely. It does look like it was dropped at sometime with a nick on the front sight but it does not affect the sight or sight picture.

It actually has the best lock up of any S&W revolver I've ever seen or had. I am very satisfied with this revolver.

Just took a couple of quick pictures of how it was received. Not very good quality pictures though.

Serial # is CAF5XXX, anyone have an idea of year it was made ? 1999-2000. Thanks

2nd edition SC of S&W lists 1994 for S/N CAFxxxx production.
4th edition SC of S&W is sketchy and unclear, suggesting maybe late 1995 - early 1996.
I have S/N CBExxxx with the factory S&W box, late 1994 / early 1995 production. It contains no MIM parts but it has the angled cylinder release. So, I'd say a good bet for your M640-1, pre-dating the angled cylinder release, would be earlier 1994 production, some of the first ones.

Thanks m3b, I really thought it would be newer than that, but I'm even more happy that it's probably one of the older ones.

I'll give S&W a call in a day or two and see what they say although I really don't need to since you have the books to reference just like they do.

The bore is perfect and it looks like this one was well taken care of. It does have the minor scratches on it like the others but nothing major. I may just clean it and leave the finish alone since it's going to be carried.

Thanks again.

Man, I am so ticked that I missed out on this one! The day I had the funds freed up they went from in stock to "NOPE"! Congrats to those quicker on the draw than me.

For very small areas, usually just a touch-up spot, lay a small piece of 320 sandpaper on the spot and tap it good on top with a small, flat-headed hammer. Tap away until you get the look you want. When finished, one fella said he used a brass brush to blend all the spots together. I read it on this forum but don't ask where! hahahaha

SWrevolverfan: I sure hope yours doesn't have the black paint goo mine had on the crane. Man, my Dunk-it didn't break it down. Solvent didn't break it down. An HD degreaser helped a little, but I have no idea what it was! Took many washings to get it off my hands and still have it under my nails. My internals were pretty clean, considering. The bore and cylinder channels are coated in lead too. Jeez. Left it in pieces for tonight! haha

Well girls and boys, it seems that I drew the short straw and got the ugly duckling. Scuffs galore, and she's been dropped, too. The stop notch peening looks worse in the pics than in person, and I've got a low round count 686 with that, so whatever.

On the bright side, the b/c gap is tight (.003) with no end shake, rotational play is slight/normal, timing is good, and it's got the old style latch. The rifling is fairly sharp, and the forcing cone looks good, and there's no flame cutting whatsoever. Plus the grips are serviceable. I'm not thrilled, but I didn't refuse the transfer. Curious as to what other folks would have done though. Would YOU have kept it at this price? Or another way to ask, if you saw it in person at a store for $383 (Centerfire total plus my $30 FFL fee), would you buy or pass? Be honest.

I'm kinda thinking since this ain't a collector, it's a good candidate for trying my hand at the wet sanding thru the grits, and taking it to a mirror polish. I've wanted to try that for a long time, but didn't want to take the factory finish off of my 686. What say ye? Or Flitz her up and have one that lives up to my forum name?

Heck, for this price, I'd kept that one too! Stainless is easily (considering) cleaned-up. Check on YouTube and you'll find lots of tricks to clean-up nicks and even the edge wear (drop) yours has. It's easy. I see yours is full of lead too. I just hate removing that stuff.

Hey Dave Baird, I got lucky and mine is pretty clean. The ejector rod and cylinder are actually almost clean and there's none of the black stuff on or in the crane. There is some sticky lubricant on it from being stored but it's coming off easily.

I got real lucky with this one. The lock up is the best I've ever seen on any revolver, new or used. It hasn't been used much and looks well cared for except for the usual scratches but none are major.

I will do a detailed cleaning this weekend, but it's actually clean enough to shoot now, that said I know there is some cleaning to to be done under the side plate.

The old oil is actually just a little tacky but not really "gummy" enough to keep it from operating until I can clean it.

Thanks again for your help.

It's a keeper.
Start with a 24 hour kerosene soak. Blow dry, and start with 80 grit dry sandpaper on the deeper gouges and work up to 1000 grit. Avoid any sanding on all roll markings and serial numbers. And do not remove side cover while doing the sanding.
It will take time, but hey it's winter. Smooth that baby up.

An old timer showed me how to do this also for muzzle loader cleaning.
