You haven't fired 9x19 from a J-frame, I take it? I had a 940, and shot at least 2500 rounds through it: the recoil I perceived was a lot closer to a .357 than it is a .38 Spl +P.

Took mine apart, cleaned the insides and decided to go with a 14lb Wolff rebound spring but kept the stock trigger spring. Did a little polishing, added a set of older Pachmayr Compac Professional grips, and took her to the range today for the first time. Went through about 100 130gr .38's and she's a fantastic shooter. Had to try a few cylinders of 158gr .357 and wow. Don't think I'll make a habit of that. That's what the 686 is for. Need to get some +P's to try.

Thanks, That is good info to know. I have not fired a 9mm from a j frame. I'm toying with the idea for one of my 640-1s. It feels a little heavier than my Mod 60-7.

The above is interesting that the 9mm in a J frame is closer to shooting a 357 than a +P.

I put a similar set of Altamonts on my Model 36. I really like having all three fingers on, much more stable.

Finally got a CT JG350G green laser grip for one of the 640-1's. like all the CT grips I've got it just needed the minimal of tweaking to get it pie plate size on target at 20 yards. And yes the green is easier to see than the red ones. And I used the CT rebate!!

So my Centerfire 640 came back from S&W where even they couldn't remove the front sight. I had to buy a new barrel (old one for sale) and while it was there it got new springs and firing pin. It was a decent trigger when it left, now it's incredible!
Added some pearl grips and a Tyler T and it's ready to go out with its brother.

Nice looking pair. Love the pearls and T grip. Was there something wrong with the sight or did you just want to change it?

No, nothing wrong with it. I just wanted the 640 to have the same set up as the 340 M&P I usually carry. surprisingly the pearls and Tyler feel about the same as the Hogue G10 grips, just prettier!

I've never been a fan of the newer G10 grips on revolvers, but this is the first time I've seen them from Hogue.
Gotta' say, they look pretty good. How do they handle?
Also, have you noticed any surface abrasion, on the frame beneath? I've heard that sometimes happens w/ composite grips.
I've currently got a Hogue Bantam (which I like) on my M&P340. How would you say they compare?
Oh yeah, I guess the 640 is "OK" too... ;=)

You made me take them off to check the frame.....and it's perfect! They fit so snug I had to thread the screw in from the wrong side and pull to remove the one.
As for feel, they are similar to the bantam grip, maybe a slight bit wider in the hand. I don't care for rubber grips with a pocket/ankle gun, which mine is. They have a slight feel of texture on them so it grabs your sweaty hand, but is not abrasive. Plus they look cool....

So I need some help sourcing a part for mine. Long story short, I lost the firing pin. I looked at the Apex kit but read about reliability issues.
Is the extra length firing pin from Brownells/Midway good to go? I can't seem to find a factory replacement.
I also thought about just sending it to Smith and Wesson. I really want to start carrying and shooting this again because it's such a nice shooter.

Care to share how much it cost, minus the new barrel. I'm seriously considering sending it mine off to get it fixed.

Reading this thread is somewhat of a bummer… when our state changed over to Glocks for primary and back-up guns approximately two years ago, we had an opportunity to buy our S&W .38/.357 back-ups and SIg P226/P229 .40 DAKs (vast majority of us where happy to ditch the DAK SIGs, especially since most were spoiled by the perviously issued DA/SA guns). I had seen a few interesting variations in the field, especially carried by some of the old school troopers, who carried the same compact .38 for 30+ years (some were in beautiful condition).
We had the option of buying only our issued gun, and could not buy another Trooper's gun. The distributor who processed our turn-ins were located in another state (Indiana). If we wanted the gun, our name would be taken down with serial number and purchaser's credit card information. The guns went to the distributor in IN to be "processed. Then the purchased gun would shipped back to a MI based FFL for transfer a couple months later (yeah…stupid). I recall the cost was around $350 for the gun + shipping to FFL back into MI + FFL transfer fees. If you were lucky enough to carry one of the older generation guns (don't know the model #, it was a .48 with shrouded visible hammer and smaller diameter grip) the cost was $450. My 640 was well worn (though refurbished and reliable) when issued five years prior, so I passed. I might have kept it, but the BS extra expense and twisted my drawers. It was tough seeing some beautiful guns getting turned in and not having a shot at them.

FWIW, I've got the Apex firing pin and spring kit in two of my jframes. I've had no problems with either. I hope this helps!

Here's mine. Lots of dried sludge on the outside. Luckily, all the lube inside is still liquid.
Cased hammer and trigger too.
Also, on the bottom of the right grip frame is a 5 digit laser etched number. MSP rack number?

You're talking about Kieslers, which is were Centerfire got theirs from. When my department, Indianapolis PD, traded in our guns they had to go to Kieslers as well & then we had a choice of 3 gun shops to transfer them to. Never made any sense to me. Kieslers still has some of these in stock for $359 plus $20 shipping. IN gets dinged on tax as well. They only sell to public safety & FFL though.

Sorry for the late post, been out of town for a while. The new barrel AND installing the big dot sight (I supplied) was $160 total with return shipping. Not too shabby.

Keisler charges tax for Michigan purchasers too. The total cost for me is $400 plus FFL. Are these still a good buy at $50 over Centerfire's price? I hear most were good condition, but some were pretty bad. Not sure if it would be better to buy new for more money and have a warranty or take a chance on these.

I don't recall much any in "bad" shape. Quite a lot were filthy, with "dry as a bone" and "whole tube of grease" being the most common things I saw. Pretty much all of them cleaned up nice.

Thanks for the reply. I read somewhere that one person had said it looked like it had been dragged along the cement. Might have to look into one of these. Person at Keisler said in an email that they were pretty picked over which makes me hesitant.

Got a email that they were back in stock. By the time I checked they were gone. Looks like a price increase. Don't want to be to greedy but the two I already have are great. Could use at least one more.

It appears that the price has gone up materially from the original post. While waiting for this to come back in stock. I bought the 340PD.This is still a very nice gun for the price, but I finally have this slot filled in my collection and will pass. (He types as his wife looks over his shoulder).

I HAVEN'T BEEN THIS TEMPTED IN A WHILE.
Trying to save $ for the wife's 60th is likely the only thing holding me back, that and already having a 640 no dash. While I like the idea of having options, (357 & 38's) I can't see firing full 357's from a snub anymore with hand issues. Been there/done that with a few SP101's. Great price for a flip or trade bait, down the road.

The day the email came out, I checked within half an hour, and they were gone that quick. Of course they might have only had one, and that would have generated the email. Probably a good thing they were out...I sure don't "need" another one!!
Best Regards, Les

Given the relevant bullet weights and the fact that they are essentially the same caliber, it makes sense. 357 has much more potential than 9mm, but most over-the-counter loads do not take advantage of it, whereas 9mm is generally mass-produced much closer to the potential of the shorter cartridge.

It's my daily carry unless something smaller is required and that is very rare

I salute your confidence in doing that (probably unnecessary) detail strip. If you're going to do things like that, you probably should be aware of Gun Parts & Firearm Accessories | Numrich Gun Parts Best of luck!
