Default Colt Cobra, New SW 66 or Kimber K6?

Which one of these are you looking forward to the most? I have to say the Cobra. Seen a couple of videos already about it. The biggest thing, no Internal Lock!! Colt did a great job keeping this quiet.

In my view, S&W can use the competition. In fact, S&W actually needs the competition to help them become truly great again in the revolver marketplace.

This is a good thing... a VERY good thing.

I agree! I love SW and if this will drive them to offer more without lock, we all win!

Given the lack of an internal lock and the MSRP... The new Cobra!

Wonder if the new Cobra has double action "stacking" like the old ones?
That's a feature I could live without.

Morning GTBL

Well, I don't have much hope for the new cobra as Colt is struggling & the original cobra was VERY labor intensive so the new one probably won't be any better than the other MIM content, quickly machined, poorly assembled modern revolvers from the majors.

The K6 looks good but Kimber has it's ups & downs quality wise so might be a c rap shoot. I like the design idea but to pull it off the quality must be maintained & quality in the modern Kimber is spotty.

The new 66 looks promising but as with other modern S&W guns the quality vacillates greatly as the tooling wears or the assembly process is accelerated to squeeze more profit from the unsuspecting public. The good part on the S&W is their customer service as it is well honed due to the total lack of quality control on products shoved out the door.

I'm not huge on the k6s looks, but I have a lot of respect for the apparent build quality and functional design. The k6s is really growing on me.

I'm glad that Colt is getting back in to revolvers, but I think once they have cobras and pythons in production for a year or 2 the hype will wane a bit. They will be a hit, but I don't see them beating S&W at much of anything (IL notwithstanding). I'm not a fan of a danty looking fiber optic front sight on a snub. I think a metal night sight would have been a home run. This won't replace my 638 or my snub nose model 15, but it splits the middle pretty effectively...just not at $900.

If I didn't have a 3 inch model 13 I'd be in line for the new model 66 with 2.75" barrel. I have the 4.25" version, and it has been fantastic. I love the changes to the lockup strength. You can shoot magnums till your hand falls off with the new 66.

While I am a SW fan, I like that Colt is getting back into the game. Hopefully the new Cobra is a great gun which is followed by more snake guns. As for the Kimber, it is great another revolver maker is in the market but not sure they bring anything unique to the table.

Just waiting to get my hand on each one to see how they really are.

We shall see! I purchased a Gold Cup last year and quality has been excellent. Having this experience gives me hope that they will produce a quality revolver as well.

I have yet to actually talk to anybody that has touched any of these new offerings. I suspect that the upcoming Shot Show will offer a lot of information. I told my LGS that I would buy a Kimber K6s if they could get their hands on one. That was nearly a year ago and still nothing. The Colt and new Mod 66 with the 2-3/4" barrel will both we worth a close look but I assume they too will be a year in getting quantities out to dealers.

$699 msrp, which they may sell at that price in the beginning...I have to re-evaluate my original skepticism. The cobra looks like a fine option at that price.

On top of that, you can get brass bead or night sights out of the box...you are not stuck with fiber optic only.

The cobra just got a lot more interesting in my book.

You might to wait until the 'new' Colt is out, and sees some use. I seriously doubt it will be a 100% exact copy of the original. New, doesn't always mean improved. It might not even be as good.

The Colt Cobra for me. A new revolver with everything you need and nothing you dont. About time to.

I hope they come out with a whole line of good looking traditional revolvers. Regards 18DAI

Looks like it will be a fun year for us revolver fans. I'm strongly leaning towards adding a Colt Cobra to my collection. And don't forget Ruger's got some neat models for 2017 too (44 Spl GP100 and 8 shot 357 mag Redhawk). Sort of reminds me of the old time competition between Colt, S&W, Ruger, ... and hey even Dan Wesson is making revolvers again.

Nice to see new revolvers coming out. Especially ones for carry like the Colt, Kimber and the model 66, 2 3/4. Revolvers are going to be here for a long, long time yet.

I'll probably pass on all three of them. If nostalgia gets the best of me, I'll find a nice used version of the real thing. To each their own.

ETA: though these aren't for me, I'm extremely glad manufacturers are putting so time and money into rolling out "new" revolvers. Being a wheel gun guy, it's good news, if only for competition and ammunition availability.

I haven't bought any new guns yet this year, That Colt Cobra may be on my list. 2017 has been a slow gun buying year for me so far.

The Kimber revolver is the best thing to happen to motivate Smith & Wesson going forward.I don't think they will even bat an eye at Colt, but Kimber has tons of money right now,and is looking to modernize the DA revolver. Now if the younger crowd picks up an interest in a newer genre ration of revolvers made of steel and wood,we all benefit.

I had no idea this was in the works. At $699 (hopefully w/ time street price will be less) 6 shot, pony/snake gun it'll be hard to pass on. Guess quality is really the biggest question if it's there this is a great thing if not it's just another gun. Sad part is even with the big manufacturers these days the quality is hit/miss.

I'm also interested in the kimber but now were back to that "quality" thing. The fact that there are so few our there so far is also an issue and likely will be with the colt too

I'm not too interested in the Kimber - I don't like the looks or the price.
I've got a 66-2 so I'm covered there and not interested in a new one
The Cobra looks awesome. I'm going to wait until the initial frenzy is over, but hopefully can pick one up later this year.

I've been over my plastic fantastics for a good while now, Been shooting mostly my 1911s. As of late the looks I have been getting as I have been shooting my revolvers has been very positive. Tactical guys, women and a lot of the younger generation have been looking at and shooting my revolvers and the results have been very positive. I think revolver shooting is making a come back. I am being asked my advice from my friends, all looking to purchase revolvers, also when it is snowy or my back hurts, I like not having to pick up brass off the floor. I hope this new Colt does well, competition in the market is always good for us consumers.

COLTS current offerings are actually really good, at least on the 1911 side. They have very good quality especially for the money.

So hopefully the Cobra will be a quality piece.

Pythons will NOT be coming back per Brent at Colt.

Pietta was working on a tribute Python, but it has been two years, and it seems like it is dead.

It would be great if Colt could offer up a new version of the Mark 4 and/ Mark 5 Trooper.

What would trip my trigger would be a 6 shot Charter Arms Bull Dog, Pit Bull, or Lab Retriever of some sort. I'd like a working class gun for a working class person (me). That does not cost me a house payment at strato prices. Yes, I know that revolvers are more expensive to manufacture, but, cheese and crackers, after taxes these things are nearly three times my first house payment and almost as much as my current.

The S&W 66 has the advantage of already being in production and we know what to expect quality-wise. I own an older 66 snub, lately it's been my most carried gun. I would want to wait at least a year before buying the K6S or Cobra.

I'm happy to see Colt making another DA revolver, but I don't think it compares well (on paper) to the K6S. I'll wait to test them both but so far the K6S is lighter, thinner, has a better rear sight, has no sharp edges and of course is chambered for .357 magnum. I don't care if it costs $200 more, I am willing to pay for quality.

I hope Kimber decides to make a version of the K6S with a 3" barrel and exposed hammer.

I've been buying Colt, S&W, and Ruger revolvers for over 50 years and look forward to see how the new Cobra feels in hand. At last years NRA convention I got to handle Kimbers first revolver the K6S. I was impressed by the fit and finish of their offering, the thing just wreaked of quality. Last week my LGS got 5 Kimbers in and one had my name on it. If the new Cobra has half the quality of the K6S I'll buy one just to have it. The Kimber is expensive but the money is well spent on a truly precision instrument, you have to actually have one in hand to appreciate just how well designed and built it is.
One thing I love about a properly timed S&W revolver is that you can stage the double action trigger making for very accurate shot placement. Some Rugers DA revolvers like the LCR also have this staging ability. That said the K6S has the hands down best factory trigger I've ever felt in my lifetime. For anyone thinking about the Kimber I highly recommend you check one out. I promise you'll be impressed.
What would make the K6S even better would be to chamber it in 327 Magnum to go along with my S&W 632 and Ruger LCR, SP101 and Single Seven in that caliber.

I'm curious to why both Kimber and Colt started with little snub-nosed revolvers? They're hard to shoot and S&W already has several prised less than both of these new ones. I'd think a 3" with a medium/small frame (like a k frame) would sell like crazy.

I would say that the current market indicates that guns meant for conceal carry are what's selling. I can't remember where I read it but Smith's J frame is their number one selling revolver, as is Ruger with their LCR. Those two models may be priced less than the new Kimber and Colt but remember that they're aluminum alloy frames and also 5 shot revolvers. The Colt and Kimber are all steel frame and 6 shot. I'd say they are closer to medium sized than small frame too. The Kimber is between a J and SP101 frame in size.

The one and only gun I plan to purchase in 2017 is the 2.75" NM66. As others have said, though, I too think it's fantastic that several manufacturers are bringing new revolvers into the market... the appeal of wheel guns is still alive and well!

Not to get off topic, but I'd also love to see S&W make a 1911 SC E-Series round butt commander in 9mm. I have it in 45, and would happily hand over my $$ for a 9mm option.

Indeed! And I had written Colt out of the revolver market - at least the SA/DA market.

The new Cobra isn't anything like the old one except they both hold 6. The new one weighs 25 oz. My 1974 carry weighs 16 oz. The new one has a stainless frame and the old one aluminum alloy. The new one's closer to a Detective Special, heavier still. I'll stick with my old Cobra. It has character.

By the way Cobras made after 1973 are rated +p. After 1000 rounds it's recommended to send it to Colt or an approved smith to be checked.

I am skeptical; although I do hope the new Colt revolver turn-out to be a wonderful hand gun. I am concerned it will start out a good seller but not so hot of a owner pleaser.

First, I am not happy with the rubber grips Kind of a wood grip/stock type of guy myself especially on revolvers.

Second, I know it is a snubbie, but where is the nice target sights like my Model 66-2 snubbie? Yea, I know just stick it in their gut and pull the trigger. I am not so enthused about the pictured front sight. Just doesn't look right to me.

Third, Were is the in-place workforce at Colt in the event a new revolver has to go back for warranty work. This is a brand new revolver model not in just name nomenclature but also in production. I think many will wonder if there will not have to be a shake-down period for a new production item. What happens if there are numerous, a lot of new products have it happen, problems during the first year or so of production. Is Colt prepared to handle significant repair/warranty work? Is the skilled repair craftsmen on hand? Will there be sufficient replacement parts available while the production line is dedicated to whole revolver demand? Maybe, it is a disposable piece meaning just remove and replace sub-assembly parts. I don't know.

I guess we will find out in 2017.

For the time being, I think I will just buy a few older S&W revolvers if I have a hankering for another revolver. They are plentiful and good deals if one shops for used ones.

Skilled labor is a problem today at Colt, look at the single-action production of 100 a month putting subcontracted parts together and stamping Colt on them. Try to buy one. After 65000 ## S.A. 3 gen. Colts are not really Colts. Did someone say Uberti parts! The subcontracted replica 1903 autos don't run for ****,shot one and had a lot of jams! There not made by Colt! Hello this is not real Colts! The new Cobra sure looks like a Armscor! Revolver Series: Rock Island Armory | Armscor International, Inc. You can take a **** and stamp Colt on it and it's still a ****!

Since I'm not a collector, per se I doubt I'll be getting the Cobra. I have a S&W 638 for cc, which cost about 1/2 of the Cobra and is approx 9 ounces lighter.

Nice to hear a review by someone who has actually held one, then a bash by someone who has not.Personally I am patiently waiting for the rumored large frame revolvers which will hopefully include .44 Magnums.

I'd get the Cobra. Don't like the internal lock in the new Smiths, and the Kimber is one of the ugliest guns I've seen in my lifetime.

After thinking about the Cobra I've decided I'd love to have one for the range but not for carry, which means I'll wait to buy until they are plentiful and below msrp if I buy one at all.

Why? Only one reason - the cylinder spins the "wrong" way. If I ever had to use my revolver and needed to get a couple more rounds in I don't want to have to think about where the freshly loaded cartridges should be loaded. With my smiths it is second nature to close the cylinder with my next round to the right of the barrel. That would cause some very loud clicks in the colt. Four clicks to be precise, and that is just not worth the satisfaction of owning a new pony six gun. I'll keep and carry my s&w revolvers for now. Maybe I can snag one for range work in the future.

I am looking forward to some user reviews and more pictures though, and I'm thrilled they are back in the revolver market.

Of these three, I'm leaning toward the new M66 2 3/4. I have the small, light weight carry revolvers covered with my 3 J-frames. I've also got a pair of the 4" medium frame guns (686 & GP100).

What I'm missing is a 3" gun that can pull occasional CC and woods walking duty. The new 66 looks perfect for that hole in my collection. I am still looking at a 3" GP as well. The Wiley Clapp version feels very good in my hand.

I LOVE the fact that revolvers seem to be making a come back. I hope the trend continues.

I talked to my LGS yesterday. They said they will charge $668 and have no idea when they will get one. They are allocated to them.

I like the M66 with 2-3/4'' barrel as well. If Smith came out and said they will offer without IL, then I would for sure get it and get the M69 to go with it.

Default Colt Cobra, New SW 66 or Kimber K6?

Far as I'm concerned, the Colt will just be a much more expensive Taurus. Which means I won't be buying one. That coil spring will stack.

I looked at a Kimber the other day and was favorably impressed. Not enough to fork over $850 for a gun that still seems too heavy for a pocket revolver and unnecessarily small for a belt gun.

I also don't want to retrain my thumb to press in instead of forward to open the cylinder. Or pull back with a Colt.

I shoot a 4" M-66 in IDPA. A lot. Also a 3" M-64 (which I carry.). Also own a 66-7 and that tensioned barrel is wicked accurate. So my defensive skills are wired to the S&W K-frame platform, especially the M-66.

Thus my new gun budget for 2017 (if it hits the streets this year) will go towards a 2 3/4 M-66 for carry and competition.

Whoa, OK, I just read the Colt has a leaf spring. I'll give it a look.

I bought a Kimber K6S last week. It's a good looking and solid revolver. Shoots great. Carries like a Detective Special. It's not worth the money. Not by a long shot. Paid $964.00 after tax. Only reason is that I collect snubbies and wanted to have one in the safe. It's going to fail at this price point. It fits my Colt D frame holsters reasonably well. The trigger guard is a bit longer.

I am looking forward to the Cobra.

I agree about the Kimber price point. I just can't see enough people buying high-end carry revolvers to make it worth while. It's basically a six-shot SP101 with a lot better trigger, but almost twice the price.

The guy at Gander Mountain who showed it to me said Kimber will be unveiling new revo models at the SHOT show. If he's right, they're really rolling the dice.

These Kimber K6Ss are extremely hard to get right now hence the high prices. I think once they've been available for awhile the price will come down substantially. Kimber didn't cut any corners producing this revolver, it is a very high quality build.
