Default Recognize this stamp on a Model 10-9?..."MP 222"

I bought this Model 10-9 earlier this week. It shows cosmetic wear consistent with regular use but functions fine. Bobbed hammer is a "bubba" job but not terrible.

I am curious about the frame marking one the left side, above the trigger guard and below the cylinder. It appears to say "MP 222" or something like it. Leads me to believe that it was either a private security company, LEO, or similar revolver. The seller is former military. Said it came from Fayetteville, NC by Fort Bragg. Thought about MP as "military police" but that is a long shot.

So, anyone seen similar markings before? Thoughts?

I have already taken off the wood and installed the Barami Hip Grip, Tyler T Grip, and rubber combo for carry

I think you're right that is agency-marked, but it's interesting that it's a 2" instead of the traditional 4" duty gun. I think less agencies issued those, NYPD being one of them

Ya...it's sort of strange. The stamping is really sloppy. It looks like somebody took a shot at it and then needed to start over. The "M" is almost double stamped. Once lightly and incompletely and then over-stamped. The first "2"is out of line with the others, positioned so high on the frame that the top curve is cut off.

My guess is that this was done in-house by an entity that had reason to further identify and track its revolvers for inventory or some other purpose. Not sure why a serial number would not have been sufficient. I don't take for granted that it was a law enforcement agency. Could have been private security guard company, company security, a county agency of some type. Hell, who knows.

I've got quite a few revolvers with odd stampings and markings. Usually have no luck solving the mystery.

Hi, is there something written on the original L/H grip at the top? Have you looked for numbers under the grips that might corroborate whether MP 22, or 222? That first 2 looks like a mis-strike?

The small black letters on the left grip panel appear to be transferred from another surface. The print is illegible and backwards. It may have been stored on a magazine or newsprint. There is nothing inside the grips.

Highly highly doubt any military connection to the gun. Unless a former agency armorer were to chime in saying they marked guns in this manner it is anyone's guess. Memphis police? Metropolitan police? Minneapolis? You get the idea.
Re guarding adding rack numbers when dealing with large numbers of guns in an organization ( my experience is military) if you have a block of guns with similar serial numbers mix ups between say serial 112311 and 113211 can happen real easy. A bit easier with rack numbers.
Fun to research and/or discover the hidden meanings and a gun with the shown amount of wear makes a great carry/ shooter
