S&W J-frame revolver questions.
I have some questions about S&W J-frame revolvers
.
Can S&W J-frame revolvers be shot for pleasure?
Or is their only purpose self defense and concealed carry?

You better shoot it for pleasure. I would never carry a gun specifically for self defense that I disliked.

That's you call. What is pain for some could be pleasure for you or visa-versa.
I have 4 J frames, 1 Ruger equivalent and a Cobra and they all get a good work out!

To answer OPs question. Yes I enjoy shooting my J frames. My model 60 and 36 are lots of fun. I don't load the model 60 too much with 357 as it has a little too much pop. My model 640pro and I really do not have a great relationship as of yet but we are working on it.

My Airweight 638 is very uncomfortable with plain 38 specials, but my recently acquired 640 Pro is a pure joy with the same rounds. All steel makes a huge difference. I've just about decided my 640 is my favorite gun. And that is after only a month or so of ownership and two range trips. I've got three holsters on order to make it my primary carry gun instead of my M&P Shield 40. I think I darn near daydream about shooting that little sucker. Yes, a pure pleasure.

Mine was also uncomfortable to shoot...with the stock grips.
I put on a pair of Pachmayr Diamond Pro grips & that made a big difference. They cover the back strap & are a little longer. More meat on the bone. 50-100 rounds fired per outing is now enjoyable.

Sure. My 317 is a great plinker and with the 3" barrel it has good accuracy out to about 20 yards or so. I also enjoy plinking with my 351PD although 22mag ammo is a bit costly for plinking. The only suggestion I would offer is to stay away from very lightweight J frames if you intend to use them for pleasure as the airweights can be hard on the hands even with light loads. A 3" model 36 would be a great pleasure gun.

A few things to consider regarding snub nose J-frames... They may be as accurate as much larger guns but are far more difficult for most people to shoot well. The small frame and light weight are quite unforgiving for the casual shooter whose skills may be deficient. Multiply the difficulty if using an airweight model and/or shooting +P ammo.
That's why many call these guns inaccurate and shoot them only at very close distances like five or ten yards. With sufficient practice and attention to technique, J-frames shoot surprisingly well at twenty-five yards.

Way to go! One great thing about the RB-Js is that there is no shortage of grips for comfort and use-ability. (Is that a word?)
There is a semi-retired LEO on this Forum who would engage in long distance shooting (IIRC, 100yds+) with other instructors using 2" bbl J-frames. The original Js from the 50s-70s were regulated for the 158gr LRN service load. Try one at distance with this load using a rest and you may be pleased. YouTube's Hickok45 regularly hits his 80-yard gong with all sorts of small handguns.

Back when I was seriously shooting PPC one of my buddies a firearms instructor LEO on the local force used to regularly shoot a model 60 at 50 yards. It was rather impressive what he could do with that little gun.
He also shot Hi Master in normal revolver and semi auto PPC and was a member of the prestigious Governors twenty, which was open to all LEOs in the state to shoot for!

Watch a few Hickok45 videos of him shooting the 642 and tell me he ain't having fun? Still impresses me how he hits those targets on the far end of his range with that little J frame.

I really enjoy target shooting with my model 60 with a 3" barrel. I like it's accuracy and +P's are a lot of fun to shoot, too. I just put a set of Hogue Monogrips on it and can't wait to get it to the range. I have bigger hands & the monogrips fit my hand and the gun very nicely. I want to try some 357's out of it now, too.

You can have fun shooting any gun within reason but for lightweight J frames the mantra "shot a little, carried a lot" is really the order of the day. The steel J frames are more fun to shoot but I still don't like a steady diet of J frame shooting.
That is .38 Special and .357 Magnum J-frames, not to be confused with a .22 caliber J frame. Those .22s can be shot all day long.
The J frame was invented, if you check the history, as an answer to the Colt Detective Special and its progeny. It was never intended to be a target gun. There are some folks who become extremely adept at using J frames - the late Bob Munden was a wizard at long distance with a J-frame. But that's for professionals unless you simply like to abuse your hands.
That is my oft expressed opinion. YMMV works here but there are definitely folks who disagree with me. I prefer a snubby K frame to a J frame and only carry my J frames when the situation requires it, like headed to the dentist or something, where I can too easily expose a belt gun but one in my pocket is undetectable.
We have plenty of friends right here on this Forum who have fun with J-frames. I don't feel the need to practice at any kind of distance with them nor do I feel the need to shoot boxes of ammunition through them at any single range session. A few rounds down range, put them where I want them at CQB distances, time to switch to K frames and larger guns for more fun. IMHO, as stated earlier.

Although probably not the j-frame type you're referring to, my 3" Model 60 is one of my favorite revolvers to shoot, and by no means uncomfortable.
Stepping down to the lighter, smaller snubbies- while not exactly pleasant to shoot, I find that, up close, they point well for me when not using the sights, or drawing and hip-shooting. Moreso than larger revolvers or autos. That type of shooting is fun!

I really enjoy shooting my 642's. I do enjoy them more now that I have Pachmayr Diamond Pro Grips on them though. Very pleasant to shoot with those grips...even with the +P rounds.

I'm not a revolver guy at all but I've typically always used a J Frame as a back up. After a shoulder injury it's one of the only things I can comfortably IWB carry as a primary. The only ones I enjoy Range shooting are the all stainless steel models. Beyond that they are specific purpose pistols to me. I have six of them now to date. Three .38spl and three .357mags.

My dad's police 38 special was one of the first handguns I shot.
Now I have a few of them. I kill paper plates, balloons, clay birds and water bottles when I can.
You know that is fun.

I've got two 'J' frames that come to the range with me quite often. Their shoot ability is dependent on the grips that fit your hand. My 60 no dash and 60-4 are fun shooters because of getting the right sized grips.
Both are 38SPL only guns.

I am with petepeterson above. My 3" Model 60 is one of my most shot guns. The full stainless construction has enough weight to feel like a real gun in the hand. The 3" barrel with adjustable sights has a long enough site radius to be accurately shot.
When I go to the range I generally put a couple of hundred .38 round on our steel plate range. .357's are a bit hot. I usually bring out the M28 for them. Thousands of .38 rounds with the M60 and still nice and tight and accurate. Much fun.
My 2" M34 gets a lot of rounds through her also. Not quite as good at hitting where I want at distance in rapid fire. Still lots of fun.

2X petepeterson- big difference between shooting my 60 3" 357 as compared to my older 60 snubby. The 60 3" is a joy to shoot.

While I have had my Model 60 3" only for a few months, I enjoy shooting it. I put on the Pachmayer Diamond Pro grip on it and love them. They cover the backstrap and I can get all 3 fingers on the grip. The gun shoots 38 +P nicely. However .357 Magnums are a little more punishing.

I enjoy shooting my 637 and 60-15. I think it depends upon how recoil sensitive a shooter may be.

My great pleasure in dim light is seeing flame exit the barrel of a 640-1 shooting 1500 ft/sec .357Mag - in moderation of course.

I have three J frames and enjoy shooting each of them:
Model 34, .22 - great fun and inexpensive
3" model 60-15 - It's hard to get any better than this, also my favorite to carry in the woods
2" 642 - As it was said above, the 2" snub is more capable than most people are. I get a kick out of running 8" plates at 15 yards or engaging a target at 25 yards in front of people who are convinced that it's useless past five yards

This J-frame 34-1 in .22 Long Rifle was specifically built for shooting pleasure. I bought this for my wife so she'd have a gun she'd enjoy shooting. Great for plinking and occasionally shooting small game.

Yep - these grips are a Godsend! A set went on my 2" mod 60 within an hour of owning it and now it could be a daily shooter - at least a couple times a week! With moderate loads it is capable of 17-20 yard 2" groups.

Up until last week, a 60-14 and a 60 pro were the only two hand guns I owned. And I shoot the heck out of them. You really can get very good with them. I love shooting them.

I believe shooting a 2" J frame makes me revert to the principles that make me a better shooter with a longer bbl.

All the 22s are fun. I never met a 22 yet that wasn't.
The lighter J's start to be less fun when you move up into the hotter 38 ammo.
I don't know that many folks think it's fun to shoot 357's in the J Frames.
They are pretty aburpt even in the heavier guns.
And like already mentioned, the grips make a huge difference in the J's.

Go get some light loaded 148 gr wadcutters. Set up a target at say 10 yds. Shoot single action with a 2 hand grip and hands resting on sandbags or something similar. Years ago I thought of short barreled guns as belly guns and not capable of any accuracy. I picked up a 36-1 J frame 3" barrelled 38. Imagine my surprise when I did this and it shot one ragged hole. Its harder to do your part with a lighter, shorter sight based gun, but if youu do yours they will amaze you.
If you spend a lot of time shooting J framed snubs in a serious manner, bigger guns with longer barrels would seem like a cake walk. If somebody can hit a ballot with one at 100 yds while holding the gun upside down the guns accuracy isn't the issue.

Pleasure shooting
The grips are important for shooting J frames frequently with comfort. These factory grips on this 14 oz. 360J are excellent for taming felt recoil. I enjoy shooting a box of .38 plinkers a couple times a month

When I was a young lad one of my mentors, who would practice regularly with his Chiefs Special, told me "This snubby is far more accurate than I am. I practice with this because learning to get good hits at 50 feet with a 2" barreled revolver will make me a much better shooter with all of my handguns."
He was right. Once I could hit my targets with the short barreled J frame. All of my shooting accuracy improved.

My take on it...

Yes. It's subjective and dependent upon how you define pleasure. I think it's fun to shoot my 640 and 442 while others might merely tolerate it as a necessary evil.
.
Or is their only purpose self defense and concealed carry?
No. You can shoot them for fun as well. Many people collect them and some collectors might have some in their collections they rarely or never shoot at all.

Well IMHO, NOTHING carries as nice as a J frame - in an appropriate (quality design / construction) holster.
Extra bonus's are that they point naturally, & are actually fun to shoot, w/ accurate "target grade" ammo.

I shoot mine every time I shoot. I constantly change Grips when shooting for long periods.

Please shoot me a PM when you try your Monogrips with .357s. I have a 60-10 with the standard grips, which are fine for +Ps, but full 125gr 357s need a little more padding. Thanks

They all are fun. When you have practiced enough to shoot them well.

I shoot my 637 but with wad cutter ammo. Lots of fun. Also love shooting my model63. Stepping up a little to the model 10, k frame is also enjoyable. If you carry, you need to shoot what you carry. I also shoot my Colt pocket lite which I carry.
