Picked up an unfired -625-6 .45 Colt Mountain Gun. I'm not sure if these grips are stock, anybody here know?

Those are the type of stocks it left S&W with. They were made by Badger.

They look nice and are O.K. for firing lighter loads. Hogue Mono-Grips were standard on most production revolvers at the time your .45 was made. I find the rubber Mono-Grip more comfortable firing harder kicking loads.

I am not sure about your 625 grips, but my 629-5 Mountain Gun came with these Hogue rubber grips...

The Hogues are comfortable at the range and overly grippy on clothing. I changed them out for Altamonts.

Grip preference certainly is personal. Other that the checkering on their sides those Altmonts look very similar to the Badgers that I'd temporarily replace with rubber Hogues.

I assume that you've killed a few coastal Grizzly bulls with that Case knife.

I have a 629-5 with the same style grips, so I'm guessing those are stock, too?

I have seen them sold with Hogue and Ahrends grips.

My .44 Mag "Mountain Gun" came with Hogue Monogrips, which came off before ever visiting the range. I fitted that particular revolver with Ahrends RB grips. A 2-5/8" 629 now wears Altamont G-10 boot grips.

Width across the back does more to mitigate recoil than any other factor. Altamont and Ahrends grips are just right, IMO, and promote a high grip for flip control. Hogue grips have a palm bulge which I find too low, and too narrow across the top. I get blisters when shooting heavy loads with rubber grips. It's better to have a little slip, as long as you don't have to readjust your grip each time.

While most or possibly all of the other production runs of Mountain Guns during the 1990s shipped with rubber Hogue Mono-Grips The first production run of .45 Colt 625 Mountain Guns shipped with Badger wood stocks. SandSpider's .45 Colt has a forged hammer so it is from the first run of .45 Colts.

There were a lot of production runs of 3" 629s that vary in details like being fluted or not, Magna ported or not, rubber Mono-Grips with or without a lanyard, etc. I do not know if the Badgers are original on his 3" 629-5. It is pre-lock so presumably pre-2000 which makes it from the time period when S&W used Badgers on some small production runs.

I USE AHRENDS CONVERSION GRIPS ON MY 3 MOUNTAIN GUNS. THEY ARE COMFORTABLE IN MY HAND, PROVIDE EXCELLENT CONTROL, DAMPEN RECOIL, ARE REASONABLY PRICED, AND IMHO, LOOK MUCH BETTER THAN THOSE UGLY GOODYEARS.....

MASSAD AYOOB HAS COMMENTED THAT FINGER GROOVE GRIPS FIT ONLY 10% OF THE SHOOTING POPULATION. UNFORTUNATELY, I AM NOT ONE OF THE 10%.....

My 625-6 .45 Colt Mountain Gun, which I purchased brand new in '96 came with the Hogue mono grip. It's julian date on the box places manufacture in March '96, I took delivery in June '96 thru RSR Distributors. It has the forged hammer and trigger. A friend also has a 625-6 MG that shipped with the Hogue's. I wish mine had come with those wood stocks.

I've found the best method is by belly-crawling to them with the Bowie clenched in your teeth!

This Case is a guarded keepsake I inherited from my dad. It doesn't get much time on the trail anymore.

I bought my forged hammer .45 Colt Mountain Gun used in 2000. The seller had two of them that he said he bought new with factory installed Badgers. I asked specifically about the Badgers because rubber Mono-Grips were the norm for Mountain Guns. Maybe S&W was inconsistent? I know some small production runs of Performance Center revolvers shipped with Badgers.

The huge Case Bowies were the top knife on many hardware store display boards. My guess is they were mostly there to catch your eye from across the room and draw you over to look at pocket knives. However, since you've mastered carrying one clinched in your teeth, you may as well practice swinging on vines and swimming across rivers to rescue Jane from the crocodiles.

I would guess this one was purchased by my dad in the late 1950s and it has been batoned through more than a few logs to make camp firewood.

When I was eight or so (1970ish) I dropped it on a rocky surface and cracked the handle. Years later while stationed in Alaska, I shipped it to Case for handle repairs and to replace the very worn original leather sheath.

Case returned it to me in a new sheath, with a new handle, a polished finish, and a razor sharp edge. The bill for that work? Nothing!! Instead of a bill they included a note thanking me for being a Case customer!

Case is definitely a great American company making quality products with outstanding customer service. You can't ask for much more than that!

k22fan, the stocks pictured in the OP are Altamonts and they are indeed OEM (factory original).

Badger has never been a S&W OEM.

Are you sure? Here is a link to the Badger stock that I think they are: Custom Smith & Wesson N Frame Frame Round Butt Pistol Grip

I'm positive. As your link illustrates, Badger grips have a blind screw hole on the nut side. Note the grips in the OP have a through hole and are shaped identically like Edmo's, also Altamonts.
