S&W 640-1 Photos Let's See Them!
I'm sure many of you are as happy with your S&W 640-1 as I am. They deserve their own picture tread, so lets see them!
Here's my Centerfire Systems Police trade-in after some light polishing with Flitz and some new grips. It was in great condition to begin with and only needed light cleaning. Inside wasn't too bad, but I de-greased and re-lubricated anyway.

Got 2 of them--both on duty in nightstands on opposite sides of the bed. They're a little shy about being photographed, though. And, they are not as shiny as yours...

Any word if they will be getting any more in stock? Seems like a pretty good deal on a quality piece of shiny magnum steel.

I missed the first batch, but got an email from them when they got more and bought mine at that time.

Bought mine from the original owner - a while back. No idea WHY he let it go. He wouldn't say, & I didn't push it...
Although just a bit heavy for every day pocket carry, it's truly a great little revolver. Carries very nicely OWB - under a minimal cover garment.
I've shown these pics before:

Great carry piece. If I saw on for sale around here, I would buy it.

This is an older image of my "melted" S&W 640-1 with XS Big Dot sight.
The work on this 640-1 was done by "Vito" at S&W Performance Center.

I don't have a picture of Just my 640, but this shows the 640 on the top right. The top left is a 940, and the bottom gun is a 40.

My 640-1 Pro Series...
This one had to make a few trips back to S&W before they got it right, but now all is good. The grips are from Crimson Trace and originally came from the factory on one of my 642-1s (note the S&W logo).
The grips provide a little more recoil absorbing capability with magnum rounds and the laser is just a nice bonus.

Mine just came in today from the Centerfire batch. I have posted over on the other thread, ( Police Trade-in 640s at Centerfire ) but here is how she looks with a nice new set of Eagle "Secret Service" stocks.
I couldn't be happier. I have been following everyone's posts, and thinking about bead blasting and all sorts of things, but now that I have disassembled it and scrubbed it out, put it back together with a little fresh lube, and taken some time to admire it, there is only a very light evidence that it has been carried at all. No abuse, and does not appear to have been shot much.
I intend to carry it anyway, so pending a range session this weekend, if the weather allows, I think I'm just going to keep it like this. I now have about half a dozen of the "Centennial" style guns, going all the way back to a pre 40, actually a pre "Centennial" which the first called the "Chiefs Special Hammerless", with a four digit serial. Have a model 42 no dash, an M&P 340, a 340 PD, a model 640-1 Pro Series, and now this 640-1. None with an Internal Lock. Some day I'll get them all together for a family portrait.
I think that we have all done very well on this offering by Centerfire Systems, and they have been a pleasure to deal with, and I will be watching their website for any deals like this in the future!!
Best Regards, Les

This is my Centerfire beauty. Some polishing to remove some marring and I think it is a looker for sure. I thought about putting some wood grips but haven't so far.

Depending on how badly your firearm needs degreasing will determine what is used to clean it. There are many different products available to achieve this and it seems like everyone has their own preference.
My 640-1 wasn't too bad, so I just used Hoppes #9 and a soft toothbrush. The old, dried oil just melted away. I gave everything a light coat of gun oil when done.
Some folks say Hoppes #9 will weaken and cause nickel finishes to flake off firearms. In the past I have used it on my nickel plated guns with no ill effects, but after hearing it could eventually cause harm, I now only use it on my blued and stainless just to be safe.

Here's mine with a 686+. Wish I hadn't hard chromed the trigger now that I've found the 686, but I can always have the 686's trigger and hammer done too. After seeing qballwill's bead blasted 640-1, I may have to get both of these done too.

Some of my Centennials are in this old snubby J-frame group photo
Many of them are teaching guns that is why they have different grips on them. It allows the students to use revolvers that fit their hands.

I bought mine from an LGS a few months back - it came with a correctly-labeled cardboard box. But ... it needed quite a bit of polishing to bring it up to snuff. I suspect it's a police trade-in - the folks at the shop were evasive when I asked where it came from. Is there a block range of serial numbers for the police trade-ins?

Hard to tell from a straight side view, but "looks like" an early M640-1, w/ forged internals. LE trade in, or not, NICE SNAG!

Not a Centerfire special. I picked this one up a couple of years ago and makes a great pocket companion.

My 640-1. Back of trigger not hollow and made in 1996 so I'm thinking all forged. Changed front site for a XS Big Dot. Sweet shooter!

Found NIB S&W 640-1 Pro Series
1st Post Newbie
After a 6 month search I was able to locate, by accident, a NIB 640-1Pro Series from 2014 at an almost local shop just by stopping in and asking what "J Frames" they had. Ive done my homework on ammo and maintenence but have no luck on the tritium fron and rear sights. A lot of people like 3 dot but my older eyes appreciate the XS dot the i sight as long as they're tritium front and back. My problem is in identifying the dovetail size or designation S&W used so I might find the XS sight Im looking for. I did contact XS and they had no info at all.
I havenmt shot it yet but plan to soon.. Seems like with all the auto's I have ai always go to the JFrame to carry.
Regards

munx:
Welcome to the forum!! That is a nice little 640-1 Pro Series you have there. I have one just like it, and love the sights. I have shot it a fair ammount... I have a lot of guns, so I like to rotate through them... But my eyes are getting a little older also, and thought I might have trouble with the sights.
But...they are much better than I would have thought. In fact, now that I have some range time on it, I have decided that they are some of the best that I have. But if you do spdecide to swap them out, I'm sure that someone here will be able to help.
Best regards, Les

Here's my newly acquired 640-1. I am guessing it'll see a lot of use. I've carried a M60 Chiefs Special for years as a BUG, but this is my first centennial.

Great 640 photos. As I've posted on several threads; after fondling and dry firing ( always with Azoom snap caps) both the new Kimber and Colt; if I needed another snub nose, I would buy a 640 all day long over either of them

My three J frames:
The 640 Pro Series is my usual carry gun but I like the satin finish on the Lady Smith. I may have to get the 640 bead blasted.
Put XS Big Dots on the Model 60 LS:
And bought a 617 8 shot .22 for training my new wife:

This is my 640-1 from Centerfire Systems after Altamont grips,
XS tritium dot sight, and Apex Duty package were added.

Here's an image of my 640-1 with XS Big Dot that I had "melted" at Smith & Wesson and an image of my 640 (no dash) with a pair of stag grips mounted on it.

Less than an hour ago I was checking out a no dash 640 at the LGS. He had it listed as a truck gun, and they had it soaked in oil.
It only had one little spot on the cylinder that couldn't have been polished out, but the action felt like it was full of dirt or rust, the cylinder release was stiff and made grinding noises too.
Price was $245, but I passed on the fear of what I'd find inside.

Very nice... If you don’t mind me asking how much did S&W charge for that “Melt” job?
I’ve got a factory ported 640-1 with a XS big dot, CT Laser grips and Apex duty/carry kit in it and I would love to get it melted.

bigoo7e.
The total cost for all of the work that I had done was approximately $300.00. That included mounting my Big Dot Sight, Melting the 640, and recrowning it.

The way I like project guns I probably would have offered a couple hundred just so I could see what was inside.

This is an old shot of my 640-1 that I let get away from me. Still kicking myself.

I have a beautiful Tulipwood Hogue mono grip that I acquired from a good friend, days before he passed. Found a home for them at the Queen Creek gun show near Phoenix.
