Default Can anyone tell me about this gun?

I recently inherited a gun but don't know much about it. Wonder if anyone can help. It's a S&W .38 special model 64-3. Serial number on butt is 7D91140. Would particularly be interested in knowing how old it is.

Thanks!,

Gordon

Catalog indicates 1981 as the probable DOB.

Pretty much a standard police issue in stainless steel / .38. There were pencil barrel guns and heavy barrel guns made. Gobs of them are on the secondary market after most LE went to autos. Always seem to have a good following, accurate and reliable and priced right at many LE trade-in distributors. I have seen them from $249 and up.

Welcome to the Forum! I am partial to the heavy barrel models. I have a 64-3 myself that currently wears C.T. Laser grips and does night stand duty. You are sure to enjoy your 64. Prices keep creeping up. Bob

Welcome to the forum.
You have inherited a very nice revolver. Purchase a box of standard velocity ammo , the fixed sights were regulated for 158 grain bullets and enjoy a trip to the range.
I have a heavy barrel model and of all my handguns it is my favorite, it is very accurate and pleasant to shoot.
She's a sweet shooter and enjoyable, have fun !

Gary

I too found a 64-3 last yr and love it...after a bunch of semi autos, this gave me the revolver bug. Such a beautiful gun.
