Default Price check on nickel 586

Have my eye on a 586 no dash nickel with a 6" barrel. I already have a blued one but it was rather beat up before I purchased it. This one is in fantastic shape, easily 98%. Has cardboard box and paperwork included.

Up my neck of the woods on a dealers table I'd expect to see an $850-900 price tag,and a dealer that won't budge

If you buy it, come back and post some pics. (If you're unsure how PM me. I'll show you the easy way).

Include a pic of the box label. A 6-inch nickel M586 no-dash isn't something we see every day.

And as long as we're looking, a 98% specimen would be appreciated.

I won a GB auction for a 6" nickel 586-1 in about 95% condition no box and docs back last October for $606

I think I might pass on it. Seller dropped the price due to anot occasional sticky trigger reset. Not sure I'm eager to buy someone else's problem. My 586 might not be a looker, but it's consistent.

I would talk him down to $500-$550 due to that issue. Then I would correct the problem, tune it up, and have a nice shooter.

I'm not that fond of Smiths overall, but there are certain models that attract me and I respect. S&W's nickel jobs are pretty nice, especially their older models, and I think a 586 in nickel would be pretty sweet. I was actually hoping to see pics of this gun soon. A sticky trigger reset wouldn't keep me away.

The sticky reset on the trigger wouldn't worry me too much on that revolver. It's easily old enough for oil to have gummed up inside and making it hang up slightly. And that is very easily fixed by pulling off the side plate and cleaning the gunk out. Remember, the no dash 586's came out in the early 80's, so it's better than 30 years old. But I would use that fact to knock off at least $100 off his asking price,

Like I've said before, I'm a sucker for nice, shiny nickel S&W revolvers! That one is purty! And if you can get it for less because of the sticky trigger return, it would be a good pistol to buy.

BTW, I just won an auction for a nickel long tube 8 3/8" 27-2 on GB tonight, but I paid a lot more than $700. It is in a wood presentation case and looks unfired (except for the factory proof rounds) though also. Hopefully I can arrange payment tomorrow and get it headed to my house fast. That will make my 4th nickel 27 in different barrel lengths, all -2 models.

I do not see the M stamp which means you still can send it to S&W on their dime. Mention the reset issue and they just might correct it. The M recall is for replacement of the firing pin bushing that S&W wanted to recall and fix because lock ups were possible with certain .357 loads.
I would not hesitate to buy it if I was in the market for another.
Already have a 586 no dash and a 686-2. 6" and 4" respectively.
Jim

Yes! As has been said, the trigger wouldn't scare me off. It's not that hard to fix, it's most likely old lube gumming it up.
I paid 600 cash and trade last year for an extra nice 6" blue 586 no dash that had no box.

Gun got here today. Looks to be in fantastic shape. Has the original serial matching box with the documents, even the old detached warranty card filled out in 1983. Trigger sticks as the seller said. Trying to decide whether to send this off to Smith and Wesson to have the recall done on it and hope they fix the action out of the kindness of their hearts or just pop it open myself.

It doesn't hurt to open up and clean it out and see if that fixes the sticky return. And you won't be without it for a few weeks while S&W has it. But if that doesn't fix the problem, get in touch with S&W and send her off. I bet they fix the sticky return problem when they do the hammer nose bushing mods.

Didn't see the requests for pictures of the box. Here it is! Not sure why the paper towels are in there.

I'm sure the Kernel will love that you posted a pic of the end label with the S-Spec and serial number. He keeps a database of serials and S-Specs and such. Looks like it was shipped on 8/25/83 FYI, if I remember how the S-Spec is read correctly.

Quick family photo of the Smith revolvers. Sorry for the terrible quality. One day I'll get a proper setup to really let these shine.

It looks like yours should be sent in for the M fix. The firing pin bushing looks deformed.

Your new gun has S&W's old style trigger over-travel stop. It's an interesting feature, but you have to take the side plate off to adjust it.

Interesting. Upon further investigation the top sideplate screw is missing as well. I'll let S&W know about the problem and see what they can do. Hopefully there are still nickel screws around for this.
