Who Has X-Frame Wood Grips
Hi guys, been a while. I've decided to send my 4" Model 500 off to my friend Gary Reeder to get it vapor honed, jewel the hammer, polish the trigger, and do some minor engraving. I'm look for some wood grip ideas. So far I've only looked at Nil and Hogue K/L round to square conversions, but if you guys have any pics of your X-Frame (any X-Frame) with wood grips I'd love to see what you got to get some more ideas. (P.S. I know I know those rubber grips come with it stock for a good reason, and I fully intend to swap em back on if I ever use anything hotter than my own tamed down plinking reloads)
Thanks,
Chris S

I put these Hogue rosewood monogrips on my 500 just for grins and they made it thru round 3 before splitting. Hogue told me beforehand that they were not meant for the X frames recoil but I had to at least try.

Looks good, just ordered a set of those from Altamont myself, though I didn't see any with the medallion over there, but i'm ok with that. How much have you shot it, and with what potency of rounds if you don't mind me asking? Any worries of cracking em at all? Again they look great! Thanks!..... Chris

Those look (looked) really good. I'm curious what were the rounds you were shooting that cracked them? I did read over at Hogue they won't gaurantee them with X-Frames, guess your the poster boy for that I just ordered the Altamonts like the post above, if they crack THEN I'll spring the 200+ for the Nil grips, or have Gary Reeder fit me with some customs to go along with his other work. Thanks for posting! ..... Chris (p.s. the polish job on the stainless looks great in that pic, did you do the work yourself?)

Thanks Chris. I was running 43.5 gr of H110 pushing 335 gr fmj projectiles. So pretty much a medium load. I was surprised at how bearable the recoil was of course until I felt the splinters. As far as the polish, I got bored one day and broke out the Mother's polish and popped a PBR and went to town.
Unless you're running very mild loads I'd save up for the Nil grips. Good luck.

I've put about 100 rds of full house 460 loads through it since the Altamonts went on. Loads are 47.5gr of H110 pushing 240gr XTP Mags. A little under max as listed by Hornady and Hodgdon as it seems the throats on my revolver are a little on the tight side. I went as high as .5gr under max listed and had some hard extraction issues. It should be noted that I had extraction issues firing the Hornady factory 200gr loads as well...
So far the grips are holding up just fine. If they do decide to crack, I won't be upset for the price I paid and considering what they are mounted to. I think that since the 460 fires lighter bullets in general compared to the 500, the grips will probably not give me any trouble.
